not have become president if not for reid's encouragement. president biden wrote that senator reid, quote, looked at challenges and believed it was within our capacity to do good, to do right, and vice president kamala harris tweeted that reid, quote, always fought for working families and the poor, and that he was kind, generous, and always to the point. and all of those memorials are very nice and very true, but in the spirit of entering the new year with the kind of ir reverence vows, i want to zero in on how harry reid was always to the point. some of my favorite harry reid remembrances are about that now legendary straightforwardness of his. so i would like to share some of those stories in a tad more detail. reid's communications director, adam gentleson remembers learning quickly how little his boss cares about getting bad press. how the worst thing he could do was to tell him not to say something he didn't want him to say. if anything it made him want to do it more. at the 2008 opening of the capitol visitor center which for the first

harry reid's devotion to landra is legendary. perhaps it was her enormous role in his life and utter respect for her as a partner that ceded his unspoken yet strong commitment to women's leadership. maybe it was the role that his mother played raising him out of extreme poverty in searchlight, nevada. whatever the motivation, the results speak for themselves. growing up in searchlight harry reid was given a nickname, pinky. i'm not sure what it referred to and i actually don't think he particularly liked it. but as senator reid lies in state in our nation's capitol this week, this woman, who benefited from his mentorship, and guidance will believe that perhaps that nickname was a premonition of his role in changing the face of leadership in nevada and this country. we all know that senator reid was infamous for not saying goodbye. i, myself, was a recipient of that dial tone on many occasions. but those occasions were because he never failed to pick up the phone when i called for advice. i will miss those phone calls but i will t

harry reid lying in state in the united states capitol. so appropriate for someone who did so much to make the future better for america. the comments that were said there, the show of support for him. the president, vice president, members of congress come to pay their respects for this great patriot. those of us who were at his funeral service, his celebration of life in nevada, two presidents, president biden and former president obama, making their remarks was quite remarkable. but to hear harry reid's children talk about him was something just glorious to behold. we would all hope that our children could even come anywhere in the same category of reflection about us as harry reid's children did. it was so beautiful. now they took him home last night in nevada, a state that he loved, worked for, always looked out for in every way. as i said, not only the environmental climate, by protecting the beautiful natural -- [indiscernible] -- but also the political climate, by protecting their status in the presidential election process. he wil
