i'm terry mcsweeney. happy new year, and that new year ushered in last night looking different. no crowds on the embarcadero in san francisco. no fireworks to see, that show was canceled across the bay area. some people appearing to opt for a quieter night. that fireworks show canceled because of rising covid cases. you can see here how much cases spiked at the end of december. a big reason why the omicron variant, which is more easily spread, but appears less severe than other variants. the surge has led to a demand for covid testing. take-home kits are hard to find. most state and county testing facilities today were closed because of the holiday. still, a lucky few in the east bay managed to find an open testing site. those tests did not come cheap for those without insurance. >> reporter: waking up with a headache on new year's day used to be nothing to worry about. no longer. don fisher scoured the internet to find an open testing site in oakland. >> of course it would make sense. a headache could be symptomatic. >> reporter: this was the line of people outside this urgent

. >> and i'm terry mcsweeney. the clock is ticking for south bay first responders to get that covid booster shot. last month, santa clara county announced all workers in high-risk settings would need to get boosted by january 24th, and that is tomorrow. if they're not boosted, they'd be reassigned from the front lines. hospitals protested, saying they would lose too many workers, so the county set up a waiver process. each hospital or department has to apply for the exemption. workers themselves cannot. santa clara county fire says 40 of its firefighters want waivers. >> meanwhile, get a shot, enjoy the museum. children's museum in san jose is trying to make it easier for people to get the covid vaccine while offering a little fun at the same time. it was turned into a vaccination clinic today as it welcomed anyone 5 and older to come in for a shot. as a bonus, anyone who did received a family pass for up to eight people to enjoy the museum for free. >> it's such a special venue and a happy venue for kids that we
