i felt tommy very much in my heart, in my chest. and like i told tabitha and her big sister hannah and hank, the whole family, i just said, it's a constitutional duty, the constitution says we have to be there that first wednesday in january in order to count the electoral college votes. and as you know, it was a surly political environment. and we had a very narrow majority at that point. and covid-19 was running rampant. and there were people who were being waylaid and people who were getting sick. and i just said, hey, we live closer to the capitol than any other member of congress other than eleanor holmes norton who is a nonvoting delegate. tabitha offered to come and hank, who is married to my older daughter hannah, came. >> you wanted to come for support. >> correct. >> when were you sitting when you realized something was going on? >> so we were in steny hoyer's office, which as you said, is close to the room we're sitting at today. and we were there pretty much all day. and you know, what you see on the news, it's a lot of

it was the day after we buried her brother, our son tommy. the saddest day of our lives. also, there was my son-in-law hank but the reason they came with me that wednesday, january 6 th was because they wanted to be together with me in the middle of a devastating week for our family. and i told them i had to go back to work because we were counting electoral votes that day on january 6th. it was our constitutional duty. >> it is difficult to kind of react in realtime to on going tragedy. you've done remarkable job and i will reissue my condolences to you and your family for your lose. why did you write this book at this time? why did you relive this for all of us and what will we learn from this? >> well, the book, joy, was a labor of love for my son tommy and i suppose it's a kind of lavioletove letter to my son an democracy i love. my family and i faced these twin traumas that came one upon another. one, the loss of our beloved tommy and the other, the assault on our democracy, the attempted coup on january 6th. it was a sleepless year for me. i wasn't sleeping anyway a

>> yes, we lost tommy on december of 31st, 2020. that was the end of the world for us. he was the light of our lives along with hanna and tabatha and our other two kids and i was drowning in agony and grief along with sarah and my wife and the rest of my family. i thought i would never recover from it. i truly taken my chief of staff who came over and was there with the police. said that i was essentially catatonic, i was wrocking back and forth, i have lost my beautiful son, my dear tommy is gone and my life is over. i felt that and we were surrounded by a lot of love from my zprfriends and our family an maryland's beautiful district for several days. we buried tommy on january fifth and the next day i had to go in for the traditionally ceremonial peaceful transfer of power and the telectoral vote. my kids tried to stop me. i had to be there. spe speaker pelosi asked me to come in. i said instead why don't you come with me and tabatha asked me would it be safe? i know donald trump has been asking these people to come to washington and i said of course it will be safe.

so i felt tommy with me. and i said i'm going to stay and fight, and i'm going to hang tough for our democracy. there's just too much at stake. and, you know, there's too many people in our country who have suffered through this period. 800,000 families lost people in covid-19, comfortable numbers lost people from their families in the opioid crisis, the mental and emotional health crisis, gun violence, you name it. so the country has been reeling under all of of the chaos and all of the violence. and we've got to hang tough and fortify democratic institutions and democratic values to be strong, both to honor the people in the past who have fought for america but also to honor our children and our grandchildren and future generations. so there's a society and a civilization worth inheriting. because we've got big problems ahead like climate change and all of the cataclysmic weather emergencies and the rising oceans, and you name it. we've got to deal with these things. we can't be constantly pulled down into

so tommy is still looking for a buyer. >> so tell me how you decided to do this? you're from the -- you're from the area, and i think that probably gave you a little bit more credibility to get people to talk. how important was that? >> i think it made all the difference. being from orangeburg i just knew the landscape of the town, and there was just so much more credibility that i had reaching out to everyone involved. they were much more willing to speak with me. and, you know, i also really care about the issue because this is my hometown, and i really cared about how the town and the people in it were portrayed. >> i loved how much you didn't feel the need to include a narrator. in fact, correct me if i'm wrong, i think we only hear your voice once in the entire documentary towards the end there, correct? >> that's right, yeah. i just -- i feel like the power of documentary you can take people into different communities and just introduce them to people where they're at, so i didn't feel there was a need to editoralize because i think audiences can draw their
