we do have the toyota news. they said they are unlikely to reach their goal of manufacturing 9 million cars this fiscal year through march. given the issues that they are seeing with trip shortages, we will be watching toyota and other carmakers. perhaps chipmakers as well. problems around semiconductor suppliers as well. the world spoke -- biggest automakers have pared back production in february. take a look at the broader markets. futures trading at the moment. we may see some downside at the open with the asx 200 down 8/10 of 1%. this of course as we have already seen u.s. stocks falling across the board here in the u.s. with some banks tumbling the most in years. disappointing results from goldman. nikkei futures looking to the downside. we've seen the japanese yen falling to a one link low. it's holding at that 114 level. kospi futures under pressure. they are seeing their longest losing streak since november. they are becoming asia's worst-performing national benchmark this year. we will be watching them

that distraction, in addition to toyota suppliers also being impacted by spreading covid cases led toyota to say yesterday that it will produce almost 50,000 fewer cars for the month of january. rishaad: what does this mean for toyota and for its production abroad, how is it doing? river: i think that is kind of why these domestic disruptions have been really hard for toyota, because it has already been struggling to produce abroad as well. asia, in general, is a big production hub for toyota and other japanese automakers as well. one of the factories we have been keeping a close watch on is one of toyota's largest factories in china. they have halted for heading into two weeks now, because the city of tianjin had basically shut down following the discovery of some covid cases there. so toyota is not see a clear end in when it will be able to restart its factory. toyota going forward will face wider disruptions as omicron beginning to spread here, and will be a big risk, going forward. haslinda: river, thank you. here are the latest business flash headlines -- peloton has dismissed report

for evs,, and toyota has presence in the market for hybrid cars. that that announcement from toyota in december almost doubled its sales target for electric vehicles in 2030 from just half a year earlier. so that signifies that automakers are embracing evs. shery: still, we know that they are a bit late to the game, especially compared to tesla. so how will they be able to compete? river: so they do certainly have a bit of a time loss compared to tesla. also we have to keep in mind tesla is advanced both in its electric vehicles and its software. so volkswagen was a bit faster than toyota in rolling out the mass-market electric vehicles. what we saw from that is that there are significant software issues as well with these traditional automakers that they face when pivoting to next-generation electric vehicles. that being said, they do bring a, manufacturing experience, so while there will be points of tension going forward, toyota and others have built a presence with reliable and affordable cars, so they may just occupy slightly different segment

volkswagen and toyota are also scaling back. just last month, -- joining us now is one of our bloomberg editors. congratulations, it is beautifully ran. somebody's -- beautifully written. what attracts you to a tesla and not a volkswagen? >> tesla has a big leg up in terms of connectivity and the technology that they bring to the screen. they also have a cool factor, i think elon musk has made a name for himself, not just with this car but with twitter, people love and hate the way he behaves on there. little things that are overlooked like software updates. over the year, your car adds a bit of range, a light show featured during the holidays. those are the things that endear people to the brand. what you're saying to see has taken the industry some time to react to the software capabilities. what we will see is the manufacturing strengthen. that is what we are seeing with toyota and volkswagen. francine: a light show. tom: new year, set up your tesla, have it there. what about the legacy carmakers? >> they have been talking ab

alix: volkswagen, toyota, they said they are coming for tesla. they have laid out plans to spend $170 billion to stay on top. the short seller, tesla is worth more than volkswagen market cap. despite the fact that volkswagen sells three times more cars than tesla. can they catch up and will they get the credit in the market? what did you make of that dislocation that was shortselling -- can volkswagen get the kind of valuation that tesla does because it sells more cars? >> you said three times for volkswagen, it's about 10 times their sales relative tesla last year. with toyota, it will be about 11. we have not gotten final results yet. in any case, it's definitely something that has been playing out for quite some time. it is been months since tesla broke the $1 trillion mark. the market has done away with fundamentals driven by internal conduct -- combustion engines. they want to know how quickly you can respond to tesla. we have seen a big run up in valuations of general motors and ford. with volkswagen and toyota, you have a case where these
