joining me now is nbc news foreign correspondent matt bradley in dnipro ukraine, and courtney kube. matt, you are in the south central portion of ukraine. what is the latest there? >> reporter: yeah, i mean, the situation here, this is a city that hasn't gotten a lot of bombardment, but nevertheless, i think it kind of speaks for every city throughout ukraine. it is so tense here. it is just girding for the worst, and you can see it in the people's faces. you can see it walking around the streets. there are soldiers manning every sort of corner, and if you're walking around there, you can expect to be stopped, you can expect to be frisked, and everybody is completely on edge, and another thing we've been seeing, people tearing down signs because when the russians do invade, they want to confuse them and not be able to have them find their way around the streets. and we're also seeing signs of people who are packing up, getting ready to fight the russians themselves with their bare hands. they're learning how to make molotov cocktails. they're learning all sort of new defensive techn

ukranians are reassessing their cultural and lingistic ties to their neighbours. to the eastern city of dnipro to meet veterans who fought against the russian backed forces despite coming from a predominantly from a russian speaking city. it is 200 kilometres from the uk and front line. it is a region sent more people to fight in the east than any outside kyiv and it has also treated thousands of casualties. the flow of casualties has slowed right down since the ceasefire several years ago but now russia has openly deployed thousands of recruits to ukraine's border. eight years of war have already left all sorts of scars here. this facility here was set up specifically to deal with war veterans and they can do all sorts of rehabilitation procedures here, massages, sports therapy, psychologist, too. there are 27,000 war veterans in this region alone. this place isjust a drop in the that sense of betrayal seems more acute in this region, where people felt closer to russia before the war. the city has changed its name now to be more ukrainian. one of the consequences of all of the years of confli

so i'm in dnipro. this is like in the center of the country. and if you go up, this is -- we've been here for about 24 hours. there hasn't been any real attacks. but we just came from kharkiv, which is north of us. and that's the second largest city in the ukraine. if you look at the map, that's just about a three-hour drive north of where we are. so kharkiv, we were there and we got some -- there was some shelling. it was actually very close to the center of the city. and acourting to courtney kube's speaking with the pentagon, our sclaeg courtney, she heard that some of the fiercest fighting has been going on outside of kharkiv. because right over the border is this town of belgorod in russia. and that's where we've seen some of the most dramatic troop movements in just the days before the fighting started. so so now moving over west, a lot of the most fierce fighting is also happening just north of kyiv, the capital. and we've also seen a lot of action right around chernohiv between there and the belarusian border. that is where we're seeing
