joe manchin is the united states senator from west virginia. he's been in office for about a decade. he's become one of the more- influential people in all of politic, seemingly with control over a president's agenda. the u.s. senate split 50/50 with a senate any senator could be powerful, but the democrats have a vice president harris as a tie breaker, so they don't need deflections from republicans to pass bills. they just need to keep all the democrats singing from the same hymnal, and lately that's been a problem. specifically joe manchin has been a problem, and that has made many in the media and some on the left very animated. sometimes i wonder if the media and some on the left know what state joe manchin represents. it's west virginia. the same west virginia that voter for donald trump twice with almost 70% of the vote. the same west virginia that has voted for the republican candidate for president in every presidential race this century. democrats have won in west virginia before, michael duchaka s beat george h. w. bush in west virgi

we heard from joe manchin yesterday yesterday who said it's dead. he doesn't know what people are talking about build back better and now we hear from the white house they're open to rebranding, which seems like the least significant element of this. are you going to be part of those conversations? how had handed this over to the white house as you start to from scratch, will you be sitting down with senator man champ chin to see what can be done? >> i don't think we're starting from scratch. we know actually exactly what different parties want. what can get 50 votes in the senate and what can get 218 votes in the house and i think that i'm perfectly fine with rebranding it. i don't mind what we call it, but what we have to do is lower costs for the more than people. we've got to lower childcare costs, lower prescription drug costs, lower healthcare costs and we have to make sure that we are addressing an unfair tax system. so those are the things that we know we got to do and i believe that we can put these pieces back together. we can call it some

people to go protest outside of manchin's house. they are going to try to get something done at some point it appears. elon musk claims he had the backing of saudi arabia to fund a potential buy-out of tesla back in 2018. this revealed in a new lawsuit his legal team filed in california. musk is arguing that the 2018 funding secure tweet which caused blowback from the securities and exchange commission was entirely truthful and a deal was already inked. the sec said he was defrauding investors which lead to a 20 million-dollar settlement and a vetting requirement from musk's tweets nancy, your reaction to this. >> those were dark days, it was the time when he conducted the infamous joe reagan bombcast. since that day stock is up 27% and if investors held on, it was hard to argue that they were harmed. i'm not defending the tweet. those are the dark days of elon musk and good for him that the saudis didn't take the company private because he's created a lot of wealth for himself and many people since then. this is california, class a

it was declared dead on live tv by joe manchin just a few weeks ago. >> it's painful, isn't it, to listen to that? >> think it's not dead in terms of some form. i still believe that is possible, but obviously, we have run into a real road block here with one senator, and my belief is still that we can pass particularly the pieces i think that we do have some agreement around, climate change investment, half a trillion dollars, the health care investments potentially, and the care economy. some pieces of the care economy. we are going to continue to push for that. i know the president is still pushing for that. but obviously, it is not what we -- it's not where we wanted to be, and i think we're still hopeful that whatever you want to call it, whatever name it is, that we will still pass a significant piece of build back better. it's just not on the timeline i had hoped for, that's for sure. >> and the timeline is a problem because time is running out, as we approach the midterms. new polling out today shows voters prefer republicans handling of the economy over democrats by double digits.

their hope has been to pick off bits, a bit here, a bit there, what manchin can live with and let him drive the negotiations. the latest inflation numbers and this polling data makes it harder. a couple of trends that i'm seeing in these polls, one, it's really striking how different the white non-college educated assessment of biden is from voters of color inside the democratic party and that really is going to make a big difference to his messaging. and another is that his approval has dropped precipitously for his handling of covid. we knew he was having trouble with the economy but it's the handling of covid numbers dropping 9 points in this last cnn poll from the last time this was measured that are giving him that double complication. like he wanted to go into that state of the union address saying everyone can be vaccinated. he wanted to be able to run on having brought covid under control and now he can't message on the economy or covid. >> i mean, lauren, you are on the hill every day. i mean, will democrats give this president a win? >> well, this has been what they're searc
