you have had an incredibly university press book. what brought you to university press? not many have their first book of fiction through up. >> the pull was they believed in my book, in the collection n the stories and were very present. you know, i have said this to writers about their agents, but i think it is true for your presses as well. you know, they help you make a better book, and they give you good feedback. but your agents, your press, everyone should be your biggest fans. and before the book got any critical response, and even just hearing the consent and seeing the stories, they were early champions. and it was comforting to know there were people that cared about this book like i care about this book. i think i was kind of bracing for a fight, especially as a black writer. and i have peers that are black that were fighting with their publishers. so the tenor was collegial, congenial. when the room opened i immediately said hi to my west virginia university press family because that's what it felt like. and i felt like i knew that my book was in good hands.

if the purpose of the university is job placement, we shouldn't have university. there's a more efficient way to put young people in jobs and make them go through four years of coursework and getting into debt to have their starting job. the purpose of university is additive. as young people are reaching their maturity we have an opportunity to turn them into critical thinkers in a complex way and those prepared to spend life seeking human flourishing. you can't do that without the humanities. life is not a quantitative, it is qualitative. institutionally, higher education is moving away from the humanities. we are not going to let it get far. we turn to higher education, the things that are highest in human experience. >> we have an international audience, primary and secondary, culture by culture. the powers of the mind, starts with this idea. in the ways of that. to reproduce what is already there. there secondary enculturation and the higher things, that forms the leader and the way we do things from your society. a different way that is just beyond the notion
