you mentioned arabe, just south of the french quarter and downtown new orleans. it is tough, people are waking up to see their home necessary pieces, trees and debris scattered across the community and learning one of their own has been killed in this. we don't know the amount of people missing this morning, that was one of the major focus for the st. bernard parrish. search and rescue will be top priority, many, close to 100 law enforcement officers will fan out going door to door, check on homes and see if there is anybody still inside that might be trapped under several feet of rubble, depending on the extent of the damage. that is going to be their challenge for the next several hours until the sun comes up. the national guard is in place, we know state police is here and it is unfortunate sight to wake up to especially good amount of new orleans, folks who live here trying to still heal and recover from the devastation that was hurricane ida. i will share a tidbit of information from the st. bernard parrish. one home lifted off the foundation and thrown into

the line was pretty much a straight line. >> new orleans is used to rain and thunder. but a tornado making its way through downtown is rare. it was in the ninth ward. and tonight, firefighters are battling this near antioch. it's on kimble island in the delta. black smoke coming from the ireland. the rio vista fire department says it's too difficult to battle the fire safely. this could go on for several days and bring the air quality down. kimball island, not too far away. >>> and cruise were scrambling in the heat this afternoon. tonight, someone is behind bars and will likely be charged with arson. you can see the sky ranger overhead. all of the flames and the smoke below. firefighters say it is the first significant fires of the season and indicator of dangerous conditions. our chief meteorologist, jeff raineri, is here now. this is a dangerous mix, try and hot. >> the last thing we need with the dry conditions, in january and february, coming in. and today, the numbers shattered the old records. 84 in concord. old record is 76, in 2000. the recors 80s in livermore

let's review what happened in new orleans first. as the sun was setting, the line of storms was approaching. at around 6:00 p.m. we knew the line would go through around 7, 7:30, the first tornado warning was issued for the storm that eventually hit the new orleans area at 7:00 p.m now, that storm didn't actually produce a tornado until a little bit later. that one at 7:19, the first tornado reported five minutes after that so there wasn't a lot of lead time for the areas, for the residents there, but there was some and the first tornado was reported around terry town, and we've seen all the damage pictures around arabi. and in all it wasn't just new orleans either we had 26 reports of tornados yesterday. we have a tornado watch. and still a couple other strong storms heading towards panama city, and later on today we'll watch addition thunderstorms rog through the southeast with wind damage especially and large possible hail damage in the ohio valley that rain will eventually make its way to the northeast i'll tell you when it's go

devastation in louisiana as a massive tornado has ripped through new orleans. these images are from louisiana. >> reporter: we're ten minutes from new orleans around 7:20 central time when we get a tornado warning on our cell phone. with a matter of minutes there was a tornado on the ground here in the lower ninth ward. and you can see what happened. there was a trail of destruction, the tornado leveled homes just like this. you can see all of the splintered wood. the home next to this is standing, but the windows have been punched out. the wind was so strong right before and right after this tornado swept through. authorities are now going home by home, block by block, searching everything, trying to make sure that everybody survived this. some people tell us they have lived here for 30 or 40 years. they survived katrina, they just survived this, but they're not exactly sure how much damage this neighborhood has. they'll slowly be able to figure that out as the sun comes up in the morning. >> thank you, will. >>> we turn now to the senate hearings for judge ke
