san bruno, just after 10:30 this morning. caltrain providing several breaking updates in the past few hours. max darrow has been on the scene all day. i know a lot of things are changing, so what does it look like right now? >> reporter: right now the situation is under control in san bruno and now the beginning of a complex and lengthy investigation into how this crash happened is underway. let's give you a look at some of the scene. this video was taken moments after the crash this morning. the video was taken by a guy on the train and he jumped off of it. this is what he saw, flames and smoke billowing out of the caltrain. investigators say this is the aftermath of a crash that should not have happened in the first place. the caltrain struck two pieces of equipment that should never have been on the tracks in th 1 injured, including the train engineer and the person operating the equipment. seven people, including a handful of passengers, were taken to the hospital, bube oka. there were around 75 passengers on the caltrain

we're keeping an eye on in san bruno. national transportation safety board, investigators are looking into what caused account train crash that left more than a dozen people injured. it happened this morning there huntington's avenue ktvu. jesse gary. joining us now live near the scene where emergency crews and investigators jesse had been working all throughout the day. alex that is right in the fire chief of san bruno says the ntsb is headed here to conduct apparel investigation into this accident. as you can see behind me, the wreckage is still on the tracks, which also sustained some damage in this accident. as for what happened here, well, investigators are definitely trying to figure out why a train headed south bong collided with equipment that should not have been on the tracks. a collision that caused the sound sounded like an earthquake. we went to work initially attacking the fire, and that was our primary. uh our primary concern is attacking the fire in evacuating all the occupants from the training. the resul

. >>> within the past 30 minutes, new information on the caltrain crash in san bruno that injured 13 people. ntsb investigators held a news conference to reveal their initial findings. kpix 5's max darrow is living san bruno near the scene of the crash. >> reporter: there has been a team of six ntsb investigators all throughout the day coming through this scene. they are still on-site. let's zoom in to the train still on the tracks. one of the thing everybody probably saw was the black smoke that came out of the train. investigators from the ntsb have already determined the cause of the fire. they say when the train hit the construction vehicle on the tracks, it punctured the fuel tank, which is what caused the fire with all of the smoke billowing out of the train. investigators are going down many avenues, but one that will be especially helpful, a camera mounted on the locomotive that faces the tracks. >> we are downloading the event data recorder, and there was on board outward facing video in the locomotive. this is going to be tremendously hopeful to us as we establish what happ
