i also want to bring back clarissa along with phillip breedlove. general, ukraine has been bracing for this all out russian assault on the eastern part of the country and now president zelenskyy says the battle for the donbas region has begun. how different, general, will this fight look than the fight for the capital of kyiv? >> well, it's been said several times, but we can sum it up by saying that i think they'll be better prepared. they took up in the north and i think they've learned from that. they've got their command and control a little tighter and that one commander so he'll be able to set priorities and bring a focused force. secondarily, as we've talked about many times, the terrain is very dirchlt. in the south, it's more open. this is the big tank and armor battle that russia really wants to have. so there will be a few factors that the ukrainians will have to deal with in the south that will be different than before. >> much closer obviously to the rus russian border so they'll have an easier way to get supplies. the pentagon says ru

joining us now is retired four star general phillip breedlove. he served as the nato supreme allied commander from 2013 to 2014. he's now a distinguished chair at the middle east institute. general, thank you for being with us tonight. let me start by asking you about the situation in mariupol. i saw a video today from a journalist from the kiev independent showing what's left of the city, which is practically nothing. this reporter rightly points out that if russia controls the city, they will only keep the land, because there is really nothing left there in terms of infrastructure. explain to our viewers why mariupol is so strategically important to the russians to the point that they would destroy it to take control of it? >> mariupol is key for several reasons, thank you for having me on tonight. it is one of the two remaining large ports in ukraine that keeps ukraine connected to the rest of the world for commerce and shipment of grain, etc. it is a key spot in that land bridge that has been talked so much about from the donetsk region down

what general breedlove is suggesting as a very foolish, reckless, and dangerous idea, namely to establish a form for forward nato bass in western ukraine to funnel arms into that country. and he says they, the u. s. shouldn't worry about russia nuclear capacity, but the man is just, i'm, the man is just floating a trial balloon here on behalf of his, his employers, he's retired and like many you less of former military officers. he now works for armaments manufacturers. he sits on a think tank called the center for new american security, which is financed by u. s. army manufacturers and the u. s. government. he's trying to sell an idea to the u. s. u. s. population that they should increase the non number of nuclear missile systems that are placed in eastern europe. and his idea is flagrantly reckless because it's likely to lead to a wider war in europe and could lead to a direct confrontation between 2 nuclear super powers. the u. s and russia, which could mean nuclear armageddon, but nuclear arm again, you could start from a simple and stupid and reckless ideas, such as general breed, l
