the success that ukrainian forces had in defending the capital city kyiv. indications now are russia forces are turning their attention east to donbas. can you update us on that situation and tell us what to expect? how does this new direction from the russian military alter the complexion of the war and alter the requirements for your country and its forces. how might they fair defending a different part of the country now? amb. markarova: if we go back to february 24, a lot of analysts predicted that it would be a short come up war for russia. -- victorious war for russia. obviously that did not happen. because of the great president that we have, because of the armed forces that defended our country. but also because of the ukrainian people. it is not just the armed forces. it is essentially everybody. the ordinary ukrainians who fight and who said no to the russian invasion. then we had the first months of very brutal shelling. after we liberated the areas north of kyiv after the russians realize they cannot encircle kyiv. we were able to liberate those

city kyiv, even in places like bucha where some of the worst atrocities of the war have been carried out. and we and all the other donor governments of the world want to be there as people come home putting plastic sheeting up instead of windows that have been shattered, making sure they have enough food even as markets struckal to get back on their feet. so you have that dimension. i mean, russia lost the battle of kyiv, and that was profoundly humiliating for russia but also creates occasions for people to get back and to at least try to resume their lives. i should note, of course, that russia continues to try to prevent that from happening both by having left land mines in their wake but also in continuing to stage lawn range missile attacks on places like kyiv or even lviv where you spent so much time. so you have that dimension. then you have the same issues that we talked about throughout this conflict which is the use of siege as weapons of war in places like mariupol. so these are places that have been under siege since early march. we're talking now six or seven weeks witho

cnn senior correspondent ed lavandera is in the capital city of kyiv. what is the latest we're hearing out of mariupol? >> reporter: well, just a few hours ago russian military officials said that they had extended an offer of surrender to the forces inside that steel factory. that deadline has come and gone, about four hours ago. no indication that the ukrainian forces and civilians inside that steel factory accepted that offer. this isn't new. there was a similar offer made on sunday that was ignored as well, and ukrainian military officials are -- military units inside that steel factory have been saying that they will continue fighting to the end. but we understand that the shelling of that steel factory continues. it just seems like it is an unimaginable, horrific situation there inside that steel factory given what has happened in that city over the last several weeks. but somehow they continue to maintain and continue fighting from that position exactly how much longer they will be able to hold on is not clear. also complicating things is any kin
