. >> darren mentioned a hint of rain in a few days but today is the the heat wave. >> this is the peak of the heat wave. san jose we have to talk. it will be 93 today for the daytime high. that's a live look from the mountains on the west side of town. we are on black mountain looking over santa clara valley. 93 is one of the higher numbers we will have but there will be many that match it across inland locations. if you look at where we are for the morning, to compare, most of us are seven degrees warmer than we were yesterday. we have a seven degree head start on the morning. a lot of that has to do with the fact that we were warm yesterday. if we put the current numbers, that means it's upper 50s. it's been a while since you can step outside and have it be in the upper 50s pretty much bay area wide though we are almost there. petaluma is a cool 45. south bay numbers 92 san jose, 93 potentially downtown, 90 palo alto. we'll see e eastbay make it to the low 90s, 92 livermore. along the east bay shoreline, mid to upper 80s. but look at the city, 82 or maybe even a degree or two warmer.

we begin with darren peck and that rain hitting the area. many of us are here for this as well. >>> light rain bay area wide. the focus is north bay, no surprise there. everybody has at least some light rain. it hasn't been measurable south of the golden gate but for santa rosa, it has been. you see what it looks like on first alert doppler. on futurecast it will give us a better idea how this goes. through the morning it starts to work south. plan on it south of the golden gate past 11:00 in the morning into early afternoon. that's the window when most of us will notice. in the north bay it rains most of the day. you will get close to half inch of rain total in places like santa rosa today. it will be more like 0.2 south of the golden gate. temperatures are in the low 50s. it will feel plenty warm. we only go to the upper 50s for daytime highs in most locations. two more rainmakers after this. the first one is saturday. we'll look at all of those in the complete forecast. how has this impacted the thursday commute? >>> i will take that dopp

. > s gea our weather forecast with meteorologist darren peck. >> a little feel good imagery, the snow pack in the sierra. several feet of new snow have fallen. when the snow pack came in at 39% of average, let's advance to today. see the snow pack grow. it's wider across the sierra. if you missed it, let's advance ertod day. what we basically did over the last three weeks with the beautiful snow that fell two feet. we kept pace with average, we were 39% of average to start the month. today 35% of average. it would have been a steeper decline. we kept pace. pretty view off towards the west, that's the scene from the top of mount suetro. we made to it 72 concord. 71 san jose. temperatures climb 7 to 8 degrees to get us today time highs, near 80 today for the warmer inland spots. low to mid-70s through the har of the bay. next three days back down to average. that starts a partern shift. breezy near the water and that system passing by to our north, tomorrow morning is the reason why. when we go to near average temperatures and gets breezy we know why, there is a weather system coming in

first alert meteorologist darren peck is here. you said it. we saw what we saw. >> 38% of average only tells you one small part of the story. that's what we look like from space. you can see there is still snowpack in the sierra but the landscape is so critically dry. 30% is not good. even that 30% we are likely not going to benefit a lot when it comes to run off in reservoirs because the landscape underneath is at historically dry levels. if you look at the soil moisture, there is sierra. there are northern mountains in the bay area. if you come to the sierra, where you have deep shades of red up and down mid sections of the range there is a key which tells you soil moisture is at historically dry levels. that is important because when that 38% of the snowpack melts off really fast over the next six weeks, most of that's going to go into the ground because the ground is really going to be able to absorb this because it is so critically dry. that means it does not necessarily go into reservoir. we will get some to flow in but not as much as we

darren peck is with us because we have a lot to prepare for, a lot of rain. >> well put. the reason we have a first alert weather day is for the afternoon with isolated thunderstorms coming in. we have to focus on the rain in the east bay. there is a good amount of rain slowing things along 680. one glance at first alert doppler shows you a bright orange blob which is moved in over the east bay. we have seen decent rain through the city and down the peninsula. we've still got rain through san mateo. if you look at that as a comparison, that's light rain. we will connect the line and get towards east bay where it turns into more impressive rain. you can see the differences from north of castro valley, northside of 580, as you go through the hill and cut across the pass. the heaviest rain is in the park. as you get towards 680 commute, this is probably where we see some of the most impactful rain. danville and alamo, between there, towards the foothills of the diablo, it is heavier there, that is enough rain that it will cause minor ponding of water on the road way. even if

we begin with darren peck and our biggest story of the morning. we are talking weather. >> the reason this is a first alert weather day is because of the possibility of thunderstorms this afternoon. that's the focus for this. we've had good rain already, watching first alert doppler, over the last two hours we saw a well organized line of rain sweep across the bay area. current radar shows you a band along 580, 680 connector. watch the last hours and that's why we might have ponding on the roadways. we switch this to futurecast. watch what shows up by early afternoon. things get more widespread and impressive. that's where we get to a different phase of the storm. it will be more energy to work with and those are the storms that can drop small hail, brief downpours, gusty winds if you happen to get one of the storms. they'll be fairly isolated but we want to draw the possibility of that happening should you not be caught off guard. a quick look shows you it is relatively warm. we'll go to the low 60s today. we have much more in the complete foreca
