this is the spot where frank james was arrested. he was spotted here on the streets, just a few yards from where i'm standing right now. police brought him into custody without incident, but all started yesterday afternoon after a law enforcement source says frank james himself called him to the crime stoppers tip line and said that he was at a mcdonald's located just a few blocks from where i am. police went over to that mcdonald's, nowhere to be found and that's when someone by the name of francisco puebla stepped up. yesterday afternoon, recognized frank james. saw him on the side walk. also saw a police car that was patrolling the area, flagged him and stopped him. >> when i saw his face, i recognized him right away. but at the same time, i feel kind of panicked because he was carrying a backpack on his right-hand side, he was heavy. he was going and talking to himself. went right straight up to the police car and told the police officer that i just saw the man that, the one who did the shooting in brooklyn and he just told me,

frank james. and a photo of the man that the nypd is describing as a person of interest in this investigation. what do you think that investigators are focusing on as they're trying to locate him inhow are they trying to find him? >> well, john, there's a massive effort going on right now to locate frarnk james. any address they have that is remotely associated with this guy is probably under surveillance or about to be by fbi agents and local police and all kinds of different jurisdictions. they are coursing through mr. james' presence online, social media, youtube, i know there's been some discussion about videos he may have posted. they'll be looking at the metadata on all of those postings to see if they can associate them with additional addresses. they'll try to locate and identify his associated, family members, if he has work or employment record, they'll go to those places. he is a person of interest at this point, but let's face it. he has a lot of explaining to do. he rented this uhaul

more than 24 hours later, frank james is still on the run. now we know police believe he is the man who shot ten people and injured many more, more than a dozen others, on a subway train during morning rush hour yesterday. police say a gunman filled a crowded sub a car with smoke before firing 33 shots at commuters. he had rented this u-haul fan found near the attack. they do not have a motive. they have found james' repeated postings on line about race, mayor eric adams and abuse. >> i get threats from time to time as a mayor, as a state representative, as a police officer. you use social media to carry out dangerous actions and there are correlations between what's being posted and carried out in our streets in this case and many other cases. >> let's start off with jason carroll. h he's live at the scene in brooklyn. jason, where is the investigation right now? >> reporter: kate, you can imagine the investigation is very much focused on following up on all those leads to try to find out exactly where frank james might be hiding out. what t

that frank james bought this gun in 2011. and that's the reason why he went from a person of interest named last night when frankly authorities were quite convinced that he was the gunman, or they wouldn't have named him, and now formally calling him a suspect in the shooting, because they believe that they've traced the gun used in the shooting to frank james, who bought the gun in 2011. and then you add to that, all the other evidence that they've acquired here. the key and the credit card that were found at the shooting scene, that tied to the subway, or tied to the van. now they've been able to see a lot of video of, they say, frank james getting out of that van and going into the subway. so even though the cameras were not working at the actual platform where the train stopped at the 36th street station, they say there are other videos that show him getting into the subway system, wearing the clothing that people have described as what the gunman wore. so this is an enormous amount of evidence. you know, we were, 24 hour
