james longman in kyiv leading us off again tonight. >> reporter: tonight, the deadliest single attack on civilians in this war so far. a russian missile hitting a train station in eastern ukraine, where thousands had gathered trying to flee. at least 50 people killed, including 5 children. more than 100 people wounded. people here had been told to leave the eastern region and had flocked to the train station in the hopes of avoiding russia's impending offensive. nate mook works for world central kitchen. he was there helping those trying to escape when the missile hit. >> the damage was spread out from the platform all the way to the outside of the station. there were cars that had been on fire that had been put out by the fire departments. there were individuals that had burned alive in these cars. these were innocent women and children and grandmothers trying to evacuate on trains and they were the target of this attack. >> reporter: there were families here. blood-soaked toys a sign that children were among those trying to get away. absolute chaos moments after the explosion shows

james longman is in kyiv. >>reporter: tonight, an astonishing admission -- moscow saying ukraine carried out this air strike on fuel depots inside russia. that's the first time russia has admitted to an attack by ukraine since the invasion began. in these videos posted online, watch as missiles, apparently fired from two helicopters, rain down on the fuel tanks located some 20 miles from the ukrainian border. flying low to evade radar, the helicopters make their escape. ukraine's defense ministry spokesman later saying he could neither confirm nor deny that ukraine was responsible. this, as peace talks continue. ukraine's chief negotiator telling abc news that negotiating positions change day-to-day depending on battlefield gains or losses, which makes talks, quote, extremely difficult. ukrainian forces claiming t have beaten back the russians in towns and villages across this country. despite consistent shelling, like at this airport near kyiv, russian troops have moved back from the capital. these areas show

james longman is in bucha, ukraine, the site of some of the worst atrocities. >> reporter: the small town of bucha has come to define putin's war on ukraine. for days, forensic experts have been revealing it. body after body, brought from ultimately failed to occupy. >> six or seven bodies in black bags. there will be more beneath the earth. i can see bodies of people who have just been thrown in as they are. >> reporter: the whole town, now a crime scene. for over a month, russian soldiers occupied bucha. when they retreated on march 31st, the rest of the world began to see the horrors the town had endured. more than 400 bodies have been recovered here. the majority civilians, and almost every day that number grows. we made our way there just days after the russians had left. on the outskirts of town, we were brought to a hastily dug grave. the sign of what was to come. an elderly man and the family buried. she was reportedly tortured. arms and fingers broken, killed, and left with her husband and son. they refused to cooperate with the invaders. their bodies still lying in the pit
