this is bloomberg. ♪ matt: this is bloomberg markets. i'm matt miller. let's get to something that caught my eye, auto sales from mercedes as well as bmw. both companies reporting declines. mercedes-benz fell 15% in the first quarter because of a lack of semiconductors. it is still struggling with supply chain issues. bmw, not as bad, down 6.2% in the quarter, with deliveries declining 7.3%. that shows you what the difference the pricing made. deliveries of fully electric vehicles were a bright spot for both. more than doubling for bmw, tripling for mercedes. they are all struggling with chips, high costs for raw materials, and as a result, sales are down but they are making more money on the cars that they sell. sticking with cars, i spoke with the volkswagen group chief purchasing officer who just wrapped up a trip visiting suppliers in ukraine. they are still working. and is also planning on coming to the u.s. >> first, we stand with the suppliers in the ukraine. as long as the safety and security of the people are given. nobody knows how long this mo

matt: and it's not just about renting cars. you do more than that there and there is so much more potential. what do you want to do with ritika gupta -- with hertz in the next five years? stephen: they are put ash we are poised to be put at the center of companies looking for mobility, the opportunity to people in things in different ways, electric vehicles, fleets, think about what we are doing with uber, we are this point drivers had to own or lease their own cars but they can no rent an electric vehicle from hertz and there is consistency of product. i think all of that is exciting. keep in mind, a lot of that mobility will be driven off of data. we send out a lot of it. we know where cars are going, where people are going, where things are going. there is a real opportunity for hertz to take the hill in the context of how mobility will play out. jon: you are obviously ambitious in this area, stephen. we have been tracking that class action suit that hertz falsely accuse customers of stealing cars that have been but -- that

matt: are consumers willing to pay the price? i have seen a lot of your competitors and toyota as well able to raise prices at levels that are to me eye-popping at first but then i think i guess i would pay that. bob: yeah. in the short term the demand is so high versus the supply. the industry will be very healthy. you are seeing that both in pricing for these raw materials as well as the decline in typical retail incentives. on the longer-term, and i look at that as 2023 and beyond, there may be some concerns about the pricing of the raw materials, the pricing of vehicles and with escalation of interest rates you were talking about earlier. that may have a downward suppression on the auto business. again, i don't see that until mid 23. the current demand versus supply is so imbalanced at this time. jon: i want to try to put more math around this. i heard you say that cars are being sold before they are built because things are so tight right now. once we have worked through some of the key supply chain issues, how much time? an

matt rivers joins us live from kyiv to discuss. matt, what is the iaea doing on site? >> well, they told us they were there to land expertise and help, jake, after what we saw the russians do when they captured that power plant, really in the early days of the war, forced the engineers that were working at the now defunct plant to continue working for days and days on end. we know there was damage at that plant. that was confirmed today by the iaea director who said they have now reached an agreement with the ukrainian government to fix some of that damage. he didn't go into detail about what the damage is, but clearly, an important step as ukraine works to secure its nuclear facilities. this visit comes at the same time as we heard news about those two cruise missiles that flew directly over at a low altitude that other power plant, the nuclear power plant in zaporizhzhia, which caused ukraine's -- the state owned enterprise that oversees nuclear operations here to say missiles at a low altitude over nuclear material poses huge risk, potentially a radiation catastroph
