today republican national committee voted unanimously to withdraw on the presidential debate. the committee chairwoman mcdaniel is pledging to find debate that forms for future republican nominees but with democrats boycott and could we be looking at a future without presidential debate? do we really need them, gary? >> i think we do. we talk about the extremes in this country whether it super healed progressives, conservatives like dave was talking about, six or 8% on either end of the political spectrum there is a vast middle of this country who still needs to be able to see and hear those people representing us whether in congress, federal office or whatever it is, i think we do need debate but what the republican national committee has to do, i like the idea and stand by the idea they need debate before voting begins, you don't have people on the debate stage in the form of moderators who have worked for the candidates but you have to come up with an alternative. you can't just say we will find a new debate stage to make sure everything is fair. you'd better come up with t

now we have the republican national committee voting unanimously last week to withdraw from this commission. what kind of impact do you think that has on the next presidential race? >> well, look, it's an okay outcome, frankly. the group the presidential debates have needed some kind of renovation both structurally and in terms of content for a long, long time. it's not being done necessarily for the right reason. this is almost entirely at the behest of those who want to support donald trump who believe that the debates were biased against him in 2020 and that contributed to his loss. that's not necessarily true, but it is believed to be true. and so they're trying to undermine the participation with the existing debate committee. i think what's going to happen, though, is if donald trump for some reason does not become the candidate of the republican party in 2024, it's his to lose or give away. but he might not run. and if he doesn't it's possible they may come crawling back and saying you know what, we'd like to be part of these very large televised debates. it's also worth noting just
