>> senate majority leader chuck schumer talked on the senate floor about saturday's mass shooting in his home state calling it the deadliest shooting in the history of buffalo and the worst mass shooting in history this year. the new york senator plans to travel with the first lady and the president to meet with the families of those killed. remarks were followed by senate judiciary committee chair dick durbin. >> madam president, two days ago barbarism descended upon the city of buffalo. about 2:30 p.m. on saturday, in a predominantly black neighborhood on buffalo's east side, the loan gun man driving from 200 miles away equipped with an assault rifle, body armor and video camera carried out a targeted attack against unarmed civilians inside i of a tops supermarket. his goal? to kill as many black americans as possible. in a matter of minutes, ten people were killed including a former buffalo police officer who worked as a security guard. at least three more were wounded. it was the deadliest shooting in the history of buffalo and worst mass shooting in america this year. today we h

reporter: [inaudible] >> shortly after returning to washington dc, senate majority leader chuck schumer spoke about his trip to new york with president biden donner victims of the recent mass shooting in buffalo. sen. schumer: madam president, it has been a sorrowful, painful few days for the people of buffalo, new york. today, i joined with president biden, the first lady, governor hogle, senator gillibrand, buffalo mayor brown, attorney general tish james and other local officials to meet with families of those killed saturday, the victims at the tops shooting market where the shooting happened intimate with a community ripped apart by unspeakable violence. there is no single word to encapsulate what it was like to visit the tops supermarket, to lay down flowers in honor of the dead, and to meet the families whose lives have been forever, forever torn apart. it was equal parts sorrow for the innocent victims we have lost, it was grief for the families that must carry on. today i met a young boy, only three years old, who lost his dad on saturday because his dad was at the store buying

so why is chuck schumer, the senate majority leader bringing this up for a vote knowing that it's not going to pass? is it purely for the symbolism? >> good morning, it's not simply symbolism, the reality is especially going into a midterm election what leader schumer has signaled is that he wants everybody on the record. it's one thing to tell a reporter, oh, i'm sort of pro-life or i'm not in favor of this particular bill and i've got another one, to have a dramatic high stakes vote and to have everybody on the record i think clarifies issues going into the midterm elections. there are many, many senators that would love to say absolutely nothing about this issue and have it just go away. chuck schumer is going to make it a little uncomfortable for those people to remain apathetic or to try and remain invisible. of course there's a big movement that's going to be mobilized and this will provide them with the targets they need to let people know. if you want a different outcome on these votes, you're going to have to change the lineup and the personnel in the senate. >> we do know th

but you heard chuck schumer talking about the fact that it's a different world now. the tectonic plates have shifted. do you believe that to be true and that does that mean that there is a likelihood that the efforts that you in the house have gone through to codify abortion protections can be passed in the senate? >> well, i certainly hope so. the house has passed a women's health protection act a's row. we can pass it again. the senate, i think it's very important for the republican senators who voted for these justices but said that they cared about abortion as a fundamental right. and actually, one who even said that she got an assurance from one of those justices, that this was subtle law. i think it's very important for those senators in particular to be on the right side of history and ensure that we protect this right. because they confirmed these justices and now these justices are making a mockery of president. they're making a mockery of women's freedoms. and really, of women overall, pregnant people overall. so the path is that i think the senate majority
