. ♪ live from cnn center, this is cnn newsroom with rosemary church. thank you for being with us. today marks one week since 21 innocent lives were cut short by a gunman who opened fire inside an elementary school in uvalde, texas. the first funeral will be held in the devastated community one day after grieving families gathered for visitations. more visitations and funerals are planned in the week ahead. 19 students and two teachers killed in the horrific shooting. ? the unimaginable heartbreak and grieving now mixed with growing anger as new details continue to emerge. lucy kavanof has more. >> reporter: a chaotic scene as police rushed to evacuate children. dispatch audio were aware that kids were still trapped inside. >> i am here. he's in a room. >> more devastating details from officials of at least two children calling 911 multiple times, pleading for help as the gunman is still inside the school for more than an hour before police enter a classroom and killed him. >> the border patrol decides to go in without orders from the police chief and command. >> at that point the

you're watching "cnn newsroom," and i'm rosemary church. we begin with the tragedy in a small texas community and an entire country in mourning. the investigation into tuesday's deadly school shooting is raising new questions about why it happened, why it keeps happening in the u.s., and how law enforcement responded. ♪ >> residents of uvalde, texas, are holding vigils for the 19 children and two teachers gunned down inside robb elementary school by an 18-year-old high school dropout. and people are leaving flowers and balloons at a makeshift memorial outside the school in the largely latino community not far from the border with mexico. and we are learning the names of some of the victims, mostly 9 and 10-year-old children. the justice of the peace in uvalde says some of the bodies are being released to funeral homes as families make their arrangements. more now on the investigation from cnn's jason carol. >> reporter: 11:21 a.m., the time stamp from a text message the gunman sent saying he's just shot his grandmother. >> the gunman was

you're watching "cnn newsroom." now more evacuations are planned in the coming day from the azovstal steel plant where the ukrainian last defenders have been holed up for weeks now, along with civilians too of course. about 50 civilians were rescued on friday. the ukrainian president volodymyr zelenskyy saying he's working on diplomatic options in the hopes of getting soldiers out safely as well. meanwhile, soviet era statues and russian flags have been popping up in that port city ahead of russia's victory day holiday on monday. the day marks the defeat of nazi germany in world war ii and western officials think vladimir putin could use the occasion to make a major announcement that he would escalate the conflict. all of this as satellite images show russia excavating the mariupol theater, which was bombed back in march. the ukrainian officials are saying that 300 people was taking shelter inside were killed. now this was hit by an apparent russian strike, despite the words "children" written in large letters outsi

joining me now is cnn meteorologist derek van dam. this is pretty worrying essentially when it comes to lake meade. >> it was just last august the bureau of reclamation projected lake mead would sit at 1,059 feet and we know it's currently at 1,049 feet. the projections what's actually happening and what's been realized is far worse than their initial projections. we've all seen the pictures of the boats now being revealed by the dried up rivers and the dried up lake beds here within lake mead. and if this worst-case scenario that michael alluded to just a moment ago actually occurs next autumn, we are going to see the most severe water cuts for the southwestern u.s. in history. in fact, it wouldn't just stretch from agriculture. it would stretch into house holds and industries as well. you can imagine how impactful that would be. look at satellite imagery. august of 2000, fast forward about 20 years to august 2021. look how that concontradiction of lake mead. that is the water levels being depleted going fast forward in time or back
