of the nra convention. so, the nra leadership does not represent its membership. that is important to remember, as well. their money is not worth life. you cannot say that donations to a political politician are worth 19 children's lives, and to teachers. this is the value equation that makes no sense. it should not be about money, it should be about sentiment, and it should be about people making their note. what is a kind of america that they want to live in? if you're politicians aren't delivering that then, what? >> you've gone through this. you are a mother who is gone through the horrible experience of losing a topic on violence at school. says that most people are not going to disagree with you, this is one of the most serious things are society faces. still, it is not front of mind for everyone. still, there are people who support solutions, like universal background checks, and red flag laws, in closing the gun show loopholes. still, they vote for politicians who oppose them, and it could not be th

is this really still about the nra? >> i think this is -- it's gone beyond the nra. the nra is responsible for cooking up an ideology. an ideology that maintains gun ownership or gun regulation are fundamentally incompatible. but the nra may be dying in our rearview mirror. but the ideology they have created is stronger than ever. it's rooted in fear, spread largely by the gun lobby, spread by the nra. fear you could be attacked by a criminal on the street on or in your home and you need a weapon to defend yourself and fear that if we have any gun control, like better background checks, that might lead eventually to gun registration, to registering your weapons. that opens the door to tyranny and some kind of totalitarian takeover and ultimately genocide. that may sound hyperbolic, and it is, but that is what the nra and the gun lobby have been cooking up and what people that go to nra conventions and pro-gun people across the united states now believe. that they have to oppose even the slightest background -- improvement in gun reform, background checks or -- becaus

and this year's nra convention, i think in many ways is symbolic of the nation's divide, and that you had gun rights advocates inside the convention hall, and protesters calling for greer reform, they were lining the streets outside. give us a sense of what you saw and what your takeaways are. tim: you know, this is the first nra convention in three years because the last couple have een canceled due to due to the pandemic. and you know, i've never seen such a large protest outside an nra event before, and not only that, the tone was just so much more vitriolic and so much more angry and so much more emotional than i've seen in the past. i mean, you had hundreds of protesters outside the convention hall in houston, and they were confronting nra members as they were approaching, trying to get into the convention hall. they were booing. they were yelling at each other, mocking each other, exchanging middle fingers. and in a lot of ways, it was kind of this penup emotion that's been waiting three years, perhaps, to be expressed. but it's something that really shows just how divided peopl

[applause] >> thank you. thank you. before we begin today, i want to talk about the people that occurred at robb elementary school in uvalde, texas on tuesday. every nra member and i know every decent american's morning right now, 21 it beautiful lives ruthlessly and indiscriminately extinguished by a criminal monster, we are witness community and all of america in prayer. nra members are parents we have sons, daughters, and loved ones. these tragedies because gut wrenching, unimaginable pain that too many are being forced to go through right now. it is not right. it should have -- it should never happen again. if we as a nation were capable of legislating people, out of the h

you're no longer with the nra. what role did you specifically play in what the nra has become today in terms of the role of pushing republican leaders to be completely inflexible on gun control? >> well, i didn't play any role in that. when i was at nra in the 1980s, it was a far more bipartisan organization. in fact, the ceo that hired me at the time, wayne la pierre's predecessor was a democrat who had been appointed by lyndon johnson to headed border patrol. it was a very different organization at the time. >> and how do you account for where things stand today, where it is almost like a gop convention with some of the major figures of the party speaking there. we saw video just yesterday of trump sort of dancing around a little bit on stage after his speech was over, in what was kind of a celebratory atmosphere, and they're all sort of repeating the same nra talking points. how did it become this stronghold inside the gop? >> well, you know, there's a lot of reasons for it, but we've become so partisan on so ma

for nra and the politicians. in the aftermath of a recurring horror, these weapons, lapierre and his allies other publican party, just throwing an excuse, drink explain organs are not the problem. it was following the sandy hook massacre, ten years ago, which left 20 children and six adults dead. then, lapierre provided one of the most and doubled excuses of the modern age. >> the only way, the only way to stop molester from killing our kids to be personally involved and invested in a plan of absolute protection. the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. >> ironically, that is the moral cosmology of a child. like, a small get, who thinks about the world with good giants and bad guys with guns. and that phrase, and the sense behind it, are now is inescapable. i mean, it was obviously ridiculous back then, elude chris thing to say, and ludicrous now. it's simply not how it functioning society works. it's a wild west state of nature in which conflicts are resolved only through violence

the nra isn't the issue here. the issue is the perceived strength of gun owners in republican primaries and collectively as a force what they could do in a fairly small pool of voters when they act together and that strikes fear in the heart of a lot of gop politicians and i think that's the issue here. it's the polarization that's the larger issue that's driving this debate, it's not the donations or the endorsements of one group anymore, it's our politics today. we're sort of locked in this red/blue dynamic, i think that's what driving this issue. i'm told there are going to be zoom meetings this week -- congress is in recess -- zoom meetings tuesday and wednesday this week between lawmakers in the senate to come up with some incremental solution on this issue. i thought it was so telling last week that chuck schumer didn't schedule a vote. that to me was the big reveal last week, no show vote, because schumer wanted to give murphy a few days, few weeks to get a compromise on guns. >> rachel, you were in houston

we come at the nra, --, at the nra wants something meaningful done to solve the problem not survey political agenda. -- serve a political agenda. [applause] the only thing the 5 million members of the nra do is support and fight for a fundamental human right, the hard-working moms and dads and sons and daughters at the nra, they are good people. the hard-working moms and dads and sons and daughters at the nra are law-abiding people. we want, and have always wanted, to enact real solutions to be -- the serious problems but those solutions do not come in the form of failed gun control policies that will not make anybody safer. you have the nra influence that is damaging xing. who are republicans beholden to when it comes to opposing any sort of gun reform, no matter how incremental we might be talking? >> they've been held to the entire gun culture that the nra has spent years nurturing and building up. i have to say, to fred's point, this idea of folks having to vote in the next election to fire the senators who are standing in the way of gun reform, i absolutely agree. i also have to say, the president here, as fred was saying, has a real opportunity to give voters something to really vote for. he can fight for government reform. -- he is bringing congress back from their two week vacation. they are going to work at finding a deal that he is personally, personally, going to lead that effort. put that 30 years of senate experience to the test. roll up his sleeves and see what he could do. this is the kind of leadership that i know that front is looking for, i am looking for. survivors and americans across the country want to see. mister president, you can

the nra responded in 2007 when virginia tech happened. this is not a time for political discussions or public policy debates. 2012 when sandy hook happened, the only thing that stopped a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. evil walks among us. the republicans in texas talk about saying don't politicize this. they are all using those talking points in their response to the uvalde massacre. let's take a look. >> we know from past experience that the most effective tool for keeping kids safe is armed law enforcement on the campus. you know, inevitably when there's a murder of this kind, you see politicians trying to politicize this. >> evil will always walk among us. >> we will continue to discuss with legislators about all the potential avenues and pathways that we can take to make sure that schools will be even safer going forward. >> check, check and check, maxwell. they are rolling out the talking points. how ironic is it for politicians who do a press conference surrounded by other press conference saying don't politicize this

let's just remind you, though what the nra is and what indeed it stands for. it's the national rifle association, founded in 1871 by two civil war veterans. when it was established its aim was to �*promote and encourage rifle shooting on a scientific basis. according to its website, it currently has nearly five million members across the us. the nra says it's widely recognised as america's foremost defender of second amendment rights of the us constitution — which is the right of people to keep and bear arms. it's the largest gun—owners�* organisation in the us. and for a while now, one of its main aims has been to lobby against gun—control laws, where it spends officially three—million us dollars each year to influence gun policies. the latest figures from 2020 reports the nra's budget to be about 250 million dollars — far more than all the country's gun control advocacy groups put together.. now, greg abbott, the governor of texas was do to actually go to houston, texas to address delegates there. the convention this year has been described as

the nra filed bankruptcy. a few months ago a judge blocked the bid by attorney general james to shutter the nra but allowed her suit against it to move forward. joining me, david hobb, survivor of the 2018 shooting at marjorie stoneman douglas high school in parkland, florida. good to see you again, david. does it surprise you at all that the purpose of the nra appears to be, yes, selling lots of guns, making sure the gun sales manufacturers make a lot of money but also living like kings? >> unfortunately, no. it's very clear that the nra board and leadership is not the same as the membership. i talked with many of the members. i've actually found some common ground with nra members. it's the leadership that is constantly telling americans that we can't agree on this issue, that we can't do anything about this. look, joy, i'm not going to lie. americans are very divided. we know what we don't agree on. we need to focus on what we can agree on. that's why i've been talking with former congressman joe walsh who

the finances of the nra, wayne lapierre using nra dues money to buy $4,000 suits and all this kind of crazy spending on his part personally. how is that affected what happened this weekend? >> if you look at attendance, if you look what happened inside the convention hall, the nra now as an organization in the shadow of the former selves, it hadn't had a convention in three years because of the pandemic. if you look at the audience that attended, when donald trump, the former president, spoke before the nra's most passionate members, a substantial percentage of the seats in that room were empty. the excitement is out of the room when it comes to the nra as an organization, its executives that sacrificed a lot of credibility in the second amendment community. >> and is the nra now in the business of simply self-preservation more than the business of influence since their influence over republicans seems to have been now internalized by the republican party. >> that's a good point. i think there's a lot of effort, you know. it's hard to say but i think a lot of time is spent in nra head

don't you also need to defeat the nra? i want to pull up on the screen the top ten senators who have taken the most money from the nra over their careers. it's a whole lot of money and it is very, very powerful republicans there. as long as the nra has the stronghold it does, does your battle have any real hope? >> listen, i think we just have to disabuse my colleagues of the notion that the nra matters. it just does not. they lose way more races than they win. joe manchin and pat toomey took on the nra. they wrote a background checks bill in 2013. they're still both in congress. pat toomey didn't lose a primary from the right. joe manchin got reelected -- >> senator, i just have to interrupt. if the nra does not matter, how come an 18 year old man bought two semiautomatic rifles on his 18th birthday and massacred a bunch of children yesterday? >> now, listen, my point is this -- i agree with you that the nra does matter because it controls a big part of the republican party right now. but they have that control because th

>> because the nra has set up this false dichotomy. they tell gop elected officials that all gun owners stand together, that it's a monolith that will vote with the nra, that the loud people with the mic control the room, and that's just a fallacy. it's so much like our national politics where you have the most loud bombastic people owning the mic and we have an assumption that's the way the rest of the people are. and much of this is on other gun owners that are responsible and decent and they know better than this. we have to stand up and knock the mic out of the hand of the nra so that we stop sending these politicians the wrong message. >> and what would that look like, ryan? >> well, i think it means that -- and since i've written my book, decent responsible gun owners, thousands of them have called and written me and said, thank you for doing this. i'm a gun owner but i'm not one of those, so now is the time to do it. pick up the phone, call your elected officials. tell them that you're a gun owner. tell them you appreciate the s

they can't win the republican primary, without support of the nra. until those who support gun reform, act like those who support guns. >> it is second to inflation, things like that? >> when you get to today, you get to the action that may or may not occur in the united states senate specifically, you think anything is going to happen? >> i don't. because i am like joe, i like to hope alive. it is not about what will happen between now and november. what dave said is right without one exception. money is part of it. the question of who gets primaried, how republican politics work, it is the fear of the nra says to you, we have an army of voters who we can turn against you, and a bunch of money, to get you if you stick with us. the cash they get from gun manufacturer, that is the carrot. the stick is, we will turn the voters and beat you in the primary. the ohm way for it to change, is to mobilize, activate, make the issue, not just an issue that you say it is the first or second issue, it is about a value, guns are important, number two on my list.

for decades, the nra has led the campaign to alter gun rights. it does so by weaponizing myths and propaganda. many of the arguments you here today, in favor of gun rights, originated from the nra. the gun lobbyists most expected messenger. many of the arguments are false or misleading, like this one. the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. nra ceo wayne lapierre uttered these infamous words in response to the sandy hook shooting were 26 children and staff were murdered. you probably heard this quote countless times in the last ten years, arguing that a fully armed citizen population is the thing that will stop bad guys with guns. the truth is, armed citizens are really successful when intervening to stop an active shooter. in fact, armed citizens with little to no training can actually make things worse. an fbi study of 160 active shooting incidents from 2000 to 2013, found that only one was stopped by an individual with a valid permit. in contrast, 21 incidents were stopped by unarmed citizens. the good guy with

the finances of the nra and using money to buy for 500 dollar suits. all these crazy spending on his part bushnell. how is that affecting this weekend? >> what's really interesting is that if you look at attendance and what happened inside the convention hall, it was really -- the nra, right now, as an organization is a shadow of its former self. it has not had a convention in three years because of the pandemic. if you look at the audience that attended when donald, trump the former president, spoke before the nra's most passing it members, a very substantial percentage of the seats in that room were empty. the excitement is out of the room when it comes to the nra as an organization. it's executives have really sacrificed a lot of its credibility in the second amendment community. >> and, this the nra, now, in the business of simply self preservation more than the business of influence since their influence over republicans seem to have been, now, internalized by the republican party? >> that's a really good point. i think that there is a lot of effo

he's not going to cross the nra. kirsten powers, what thoughts are going through your mind as you are hearing all this? >> well, just you know, a little bit of his speech that i was able to read before we came on. he's doing what the nra likes to do which is point to every single thing except for the gun. it is usually the same gun that's used when ever we have these massacres. yes, mental health is an issue in this country and separate from gun violence. we need to take it seriously because people are suffering. there are mentally ill people in other countries. the difference is other countries don't arm them with semiautomatic weapons. there are things that could be done. i should mention that donald trump also blamed broken families for this? he's been divorced twice. the problem is the guns. we have to do something to keep these guns out of the hands of dangerous people and one of the things they can do immediately would be raise the age to purchase a gun because most violence with guns are committed by young men

republicans are gathering at the nra. there's a myth that the gop is the nra. speak about the political significance of republicans gathering there. >> the nra is an example of today's politics. a group that is basically where most conservatives are. republicans at the moment our second amendment absolutists. it's not as if the republicans need to go to the nra to get a dispensation to pass gun laws. the last time the nra took a staunc position against a piece of gun legislation was with the fix nics a in the trump administration. it was basically some kind of a background check system. the nra lobbied heavily against it. republicans were able to get it across the finish line. donald trump signed it into law. i think that people don't appreciate that the nra is one of the many groups in d.c. that takes a position where most people are and claims it as their own and claims that they are causing that. i think right now, republicans can. democrats are being reasonable here. this is the interesting thing. democrats traditionally have trd to swing for the fences whe
