house or work on restoration of the white house. there's a whole series of first ladies and presidents prior to that. absolutely. well, i was just going to say nancy. what a remarkable discovery during the the process of preparing this presentation. and so i guess quickly. i'll ask the other two of you. you know, you are tremendous scholars of these first ladies. is there anything you learned that was was new to you as you looked at them as preservationists? well, i actually last night was looking for some more information on john carl warnicki the architect from the west coast who worked with mrs. kennedy by virtue of his friendship. first of all with president kennedy, and so there's a really brilliant lecture given by a stanford architectural history professor last year about john carl warnicki, and he spends a fair amount of time talking about this relationship with miss kennedy, but i learned a lot about this concept of contextualization and i i knew that that he was famous for being able to preserve historically while building

house, or to donate them to the white house. now, this is something that had been done and actually, the room on the upper left, on the upper right here, there's actually a silver collection back in the corner. and this one had been donated, this silver collection, this is a gilded silver collection, which had been donated much earlier. but i point this out because while some things were donated to the white house, others had to be bought. and for this and for the work itself, for the rebuilding and the restoring of the woodwork and the floors, everything else, mrs. nixon whould set up these luncheons or these teas and they would invite people in and they would have, they would say, okay, so now coming, and this is what we are planning to do here, and this is going to take a little work, and we need your help and support in this. and so mrs. johnson -- nancy pointed out to mrs. johnson didn't like to ask people for money, and she was very good at saying thank you, mrs. dickson was good at bringing people in and charming them and

the white house? well the theory of restoration and preservation, is that by restoring and preserving the past we can make certain that we don't make that were made in the past and we can learn and do better citizens for the future. that's the whole theory of history why we study history. it's to learn from the past make certainly don't make the same mistakes and do better at going forward. now the human brain has not yet evolved such that when you see a picture of the white house or a picture of any historic building, it's the same as actually visiting it you can look at the picture of the white house and get some sense of what it's all about, but it's not the same as a visiting it and therefore if you preserve it more people want to visit it what people want to see what this white house is about and therefore our citizens flock to see it all the time and they should and it's possible to make this white house better because we can provide the resources through the white house historical association t

i think there's just this frustration and the white house is aware of that. ultimately, how much can they do in the immediate term to lower those prices and show that they are working on this? host: has there been frustration as well that some members of the administration go off message with inflation? there is not one solid administration response to what is going on with inflation in this country. guest: i think we saw last week, the president wrote this opinion piece in "the wall street journal," laying out his plan for addressing inflation. he wants to lower the deficit, such as lowering the cost of childcare, and contrasting that with the republican agenda. then, we also solve the treasury secretary on cnn say essentially that they were wrong on inflation to say it was transitory and would go away in a few months last year. i think last week, we started to see the white house very quickly focusing on inflation, but also may be still trying a little bit to fine-tune their message on how much to acknowledge that they got predictions wrong versus how much

she is question by the house committee vice chair l cheney. >> inside the white house the president's advisors, including members of his family, wanted him to deliver a speech. pat philbin prepared the first draft of what would be the president's remarks on national healing. delivered via pre-taped video on when he arrived at the white january 7. house on the 7th, mr. philbin believed that more needed to be said. so he sat down and started writing. he shared the draft with pat cipollone, who also believed the president neededo say more. mr. cipollone agreed with the content as did eric herschmann, who reviewed the draft. the committee has learned that the president did not agree with the substance as drafted and resisted giving a speech at all. ms. hutchinson, do you recall discussions about the president's speech on january 7? >> i do. >> let's listen, ms. hutchison, to what you told us about that and about the process of crafting those remarks. >> i learned from a conversation with mark and overhearing between him and white house counsel and eric herschmann as well that trump didn't

so pretty much the way that the white house is handling the election period. he felt that that could be dangerous for passions in terms of president, for elections, for the, for the say, i'm just hoping that we can see so ms. hutchinson, and now we're going to turn to certain information that was available before january 4th and what the top administration and the president knew about the potential for violence. before january 6 on the screen, you will see an e mail received by acting deputy attorney general donahue. on january 4th from the national security division of the department of justice, mr. donahue testified in our hearings last week. e mail identifies apparent planning by those coming to washington on january 6th to quote occupied federal buildings and discussions of quote, invading the capital building. here's what mr. donahue said to us, and we knew that if you had tens of thousands of very upset, upset people showing up in washington dc that there was potential for you. a secret service was looking at similar information and watching the planned

this was an unchecked white house investigative unit. nixon knew full well that his people were going to engage in a crime against an american citizen, but he's not told details of what's going to happen, so nixon had deniability. hunt and liddy's team break in. they look around and they don't find any psychiatric notes, so they decide to make it look like a drug addict has broken into a psychiatrist's office looking for prescription drugs, and then they leave. the beverly hills police come in and they begin to look for suspects and they have someone in jail as part of a plea deal who says he did it. how this person could have been responsible for a break-in when he was actually in custody, one doesn't know. but the case is solved even though the plumbers and the white house did it. >> nixon would go to any lengths to get something done, and whether or not it's legal would just have nothing to do with it. a year before the watergate break-in, there is a discussion with nixon, haldeman and kissinger, and they are talking about fire bombin

>> let me go back to, what white house chief of staff needs to be leaving the white house the night before, and we now know, everyone knows that there's going to be trouble tomorrow and he's running over to a war room with rudy giuliani over at the willard hotel? and it took -- cassidy is now, i think, 26 years old. at the time she was 24 years old. she had to be the one to tell him this really isn't appropriate to go. look, one of the footnotes -- there were so many bombshells, cinematic moments. let's talk about the fact that she testified that rudy is walking around talking about the oathkeepers and the proud boys. my understanding is, in the hearings to come, you know better than anyone, that we were going to see more and more of a connection between some of these groups and the white house, and that testimony about rudy is a very interesting starting point. >> it's absolutely so critical, this point that you raise. and it's critical for a couple reasons. first of all, in the criminality question, because we know many members of these groups have been indicted or are in the process of
