joining us now with more is fema administrator deanne criswell. thank you for being with us. what do efforts look like at this point in time? >> good morning, jose. thanks so much for having me on today. we are just about 30 days post hurricane ian maing landfall. we have federal partners on the ground supporting the recovery efforts. our first days was focused on life-saving efforts and stabilizing. there's been tremendous work that has been done already to stabilize the electricity grid. now we are looking at what is that recovery going to look like to support the people, families impacted and who lost their homes. really the devastation is quite remarkable as to how much people have lost as a result of hurricane ian. >> yeah. when you look at -- and i've been looking through some of the documents that you all have. when you look at some of the numbers that you all have been, you know, sending to florida and i'm just more than 1.65 billion in total aid, providing housing to eligible in charlotte, collier, lee, sarasota counties. how about folks, for example, we were there j

we are expecting to hear from deanne criswell, the fema administrator, at any moment. we'll bring you her remarks live. right now i want to speak to a resident here in ft. myers, laura brooks. she actually rode out the storm on her boat, and from what we can see here it appears as though it's intact, notably right next to it, the vessel next to it is tipped over, damaged perhaps irreparably. laura, a lot of folks i think at home are wondering what made you decide to stay and ride out the storm here. >> i didn't stay on the boat the whole time. actually, on tuesday, around 6:00 or 6:30 i guess, just before it got dark, i pretty much centered my boat, tied it as good as i could and centered it, then took my cats and got in my car, put all my stuff in my car, and we thought it would be -- you know, i've only experienced irma before so i thought maybe it will be like that. so i thought well, i'll stay in the ladies bathroom there, you know. wasn't fun, but, you know, it was okay. tuesday night, everything was fine, it was stormy and everything, but wednesday was just a nig

i want to go straight to the person leading the national recovery effort, fema administrator deanne criswell. administrator criswell, thank you for joining me. you took a tour on friday at the devastation in florida, entire communities as we just showed destroyed. how did what you saw on the ground compare to other storms that we've seen in recent years? >> good morning, dana. yes, i spent the last two days in florida and friday had the opportunity to travel with the governor to survey some of the impacts that we have been hearing about and that we've been seeing on the news. the impacts are devastating. the western coast of florida, many homes completely destroyed, several that are damaged, communities that are going to have a long road to recovery. we also saw homes that are still under water in the central part of florida, as ian caused intense flooding as it crossed the state. this is going to be an all-of-government response and recovery effort and it's going to be an all-of-society, bringing together all of our partners to help these people, to help all these families get on their road

in florida this afternoon, fema administrator deanne criswell acknowledged the long road to recovery. ms. criswell: we have already started the planning efforts for what it's gonna take to rebuild these communities and recover from this storm, but also recover in a way that makes them more resilient against some of the impacts from these storms in the future. anthony: this was scary. it was my first ever hurricane experience, it was scary. and i just hope it gets better. john: but for many in southwest florida and beyond, full recovery is still weeks, if not months, away. another distinctive feature about this storm, offials say it caused more water damage than wind damage in florida. you can see theun seekers have returned to the beaches of southwestern florida, that in the days ahead, theris a lot of hard work for a lot of people. geoff: what do we know about the cost of recovery in florida and elsewhere resulting from hurricane ian? john: some estimates that this could be the most costly storm in u.s. history. by one estimate, up to $100 billion, billion with a b. but a lot of this

but today deanne criswell offered some advice to homeowners saying if they own a home, any type of water nearby, they should consider getting flood insurance. >> our flood maps address a specific type of flooding. what i would say is that people need to understand that, well, in certain areas, we require flood insurance. everybody has the ability to purchase flood insurance. and if you live near water or where it rains, it can certainly flood and we have seen that multiple storms this year. >> if you want to be rescued you will. if somebody does not want to leave their home, they're not going to. but it's been a team effort. we had -- there's more urban search-and-rescue teams in florida now than in any one place in american history since september 11th. if you think about it, there's been massive events that have happened since september 11th and we have more here. and part of that is just a reflection that, yes, it was a very powerful hurricane, it was a big hurricane and it cut across the entire state of florida. i mean, some of these other major hurricane events, it hits one spot and
