ktvu. millions of californians are expected to fill out vote by mail ballots for the november election. but in every statewide election registrars reject and disqualified tens of thousands of those ballots. ktvu brooks jarocz takes a look now at new data on ballots that went uncounted. in the june primary. in alameda county and across california. vote by mail is well underway, but some ballots may get disqualified data shows in the june primary, nearly 106,000 were rejected by registrars. nearly 70,000 arrived late. others were missing a signature or had one that didn't match the signature on file. researchers say it disproportionately happens to first time voters and voters of color. we do know, for instance, young people are more likely if they get the ballot rejected. it's because it's late for latinos is more likely to be a signature issue. for new voters. it can be also a signature issue. it's critical ballots are signed in postmarked by election day. in the end mail in ballot rejectio

henry lee ktvu fox two news. oakland police have made an arrest in the 100 homicide of the year because he'll atiba is accused of killing 60 year old luis joey. true hill. true hill was shot to death on october 3rd in the area of 14th and kirk, um in west oakland. last night, family and friends gathered in that area. they held hands in a prayer circle and lit candles in his memory. he was killed, one block away from his home. the number of gunshot victims is on the rise in oakland, according to alameda health system highland hospital is treating on average about 44 gunshot victims every month this year. that's higher than 24 month, on average, in 2019 and 23 a month in 2018. highland hospital doesn't treat all gunshot victims in alameda county, but it does see many of them. the hospital says gun violence in alameda county is affecting low income people of color more than other groups, the brother of the man accused of kidnapping and killing four members of one family in merced is now in custody. the merced county

brooks jarocz ktvu, fox two news. new attend tonight in san francisco nearly twice as many people died from drug overdoses, then from covid-19. during the same time period, data from the medical examiner released today shows more than 1800 people have died from drug overdoses since january of 2020 about 1050 people were killed by covid during that same time frame. so far this year. the number of drug overdoses compared to last year is down. 451 people have died so far this year from overdoses. during that same period last year, the number was 490 governor, newsom announced the covid state of emergency for california will end in february. the governor's office says the state will continue what's called the smarter plan designed to maintain preparedness to support communities and quickly respond to outbreaks. governor newsom says the state's pandemic response saved tens of thousands of lives, protected the economy and built up an unprecedented public health infrastructure. the state of emergency officially ends february
