on nbc news daley, i'm janelle bank in the nbc bay area newsroom. the bay area has some of the safest and riskiest places to live in the country according to a new ranking release this had morning where two bay area cities were on opposite sides of the spectrum. it's important to know what was looked for in these ratings. wallet hub compared nearly 200 cities and looked at three key dimensions, home and community safety, natural disaster risk and financial safety within those dimensions. it ranked fremont the highest among california cities, 17th overall in the country. on the opposite side of the spectrum oakland ranks among the riskiest cities in the u.s. at number eight. safety has been an issue in oakland specifically with the rise in violent crime. 50% in 2021 surpassing 100 homicides for the first time in a decade. with three months to go this year more than 100 homicides already reported in 2022. more than 1100 firearms have been recovered so far this year. >>> okay. let's talk about our weather. it is warm and sunny right now in the bay area

in washington, i'm brie jackson for nbc news. >>> more details this morning. russia is now adding social media giant meta to its list of terrorists and extremist organizations according to a report from russian news agency interfax. meta is a parent company of facebook, instagram and whatsapp, all apps now expected to be cut off there. although facebook and instagram have been blocked since march, meta so far is not commenting. >>> at home happening this hour, antioch's police chief is laying out a plan to fill police officer vacancies. this comes as at least eight officers are being investigated by the contra costa county district attorney and the fbi. the eight officers make up about 15% of the total patrol division. authorities are not elaborating on the crimes they're accused of committing, but the d.a.'s office said the case involves a broad range of offenses, including crimes of what he called moral turpitude. >>> police in pleasanton are trying to identify two men believed to be linked to a number of home invasions, and if you look at that surveillance

nbc bay area's kris sanchez is live in san jose. there are things you can do now to prepare. >> reporter: absolutely, and there's one really big thing you could do maybe without spending a dime, and that's seismic retrofitting. take a look at this map. if you live in one of those blue areas, you are in one of the 500 high risk zip codes because of your proximity to a fault line. a retrofit with a contractor can cost between $3,000 and $7,000, bu for less than $3,000. the state's earthquake brace and bolt retrofit grant program is now accepting applications through november 29th. that's the website on your screen. fema also has some seismic retrofit videos you can watch to learn what you need to know. the retrofit is just bolted to the foundation and bracing along your crawl space to prevent your home from sliding or toppling off the foundation during an earthquake. another thing you can do is to get one of the earthquake notification apps. about 95,000 people got a few seconds of warning on their phones via the my shake app on iphon

myers beach, florida, nbc news correspondent liz mclaughlin. what is the latest on the recovery efforts? >> reporter: five days after hurricane ian barreled through this once vibrant marina and it looks like no time has passed at all. it's completely unrecognizable, just piles of debris. where i'm standing there used to be a building where they rent out kayaks, where people could come, bait shop, and it was picked up and deposited across the street. it looks like there was a tornado. there's tangles of power lines and debris, siding of people's homes, children's toys, just piles of it, and it's going to take years to recover according to some of the business owners i have talked to, the demolition crewings that are starting to come in now. and officials tell us that residents can't come to ft. myers beach for this upcoming week. they're still trying to have those recovery, those search efforts, and it's just too much confusion to have residents going back and forth. obviously, people want to check on their property, on their loved ones, through

shining a light on an nbc news exclusive. a new push by dozens of fortune 500 companies to protect more than 600,000 daca recipients. the end of daca would greatly hurt the economy as federal courts seem likely to end the executive order that has protected dreamers since 2012. joining us now is julia ainsley. is this corporate push going to make a difference? >> well, people who we're speaking to is saying probably not. it looks like with republicans due to make gains in the midterms and the fact that there's little appetite now in congress to do anything on daca or immigration reform overall, it might be that this business push is just too little too late. but the businesses are saying that if congress doesn't act, they are going to see an even bigger hit to the economy. 22,000 jobs lost per month. in texas alone, that means 400 health care workers and 300 teachers would be walking out of the workforce every month. so they're asking congress to do more. but i'm told by congressional aides that unless they're reaching out to
