integrity issues in nevada? i ask you that question through this prism. you might remember harry reid, pretty famous interview, said we won, didn't we, when asked whether or not it was an honest election. i think you know the quote i'm talking about. my question is, do you worry about it? do you feel that -- >> what they did in 2020, 90 days before the election, the democrats, went in with no republican votes, and they gave us the first-ever universal mailout balloting election. ballot harvesting was a felony, day 91, became legal method of voting day 90. so it's a system that we thought on our side we were not ready for. and, you know, we can't relitigate 2020. it is better now. we have more poll workers. we have more poll watchers. at the end of the day nevadans have to turn out. we need a new governor. we need to get rid of ballot harvesting drop boxes and -- >> sean: maybe i'm old-fashioned. what if we made voting a national holiday, now for the safety of the infirm, elderly, they can have mail-in ballots, o

sheriff, do teachers in nevada deserve a raise? sheriff lombardo: yes. on the police department, we base it on two to 3% on an annual basis. i think it should be similar to that. i think it is important they have a livable wage so they can even purchase a house to live in. affordable housing is the key issue and it is a direct reflection upon our first responders, our teachers, our seniors. are you saying -- moderator: are you saying you would only give them a two or 3% raise? sheriff lombardo: it depends on what is an affordable wage. moderator: how would you pay for it? sheriff lombardo: we will figure it out with the existing budget. i believe there is in a hundred million dollars surplus in the general fund. there are ways within the exec -- existing budget streams to pay for it. moderator: governor, same question. do teachers deserve a raise? gov. sisolak: absolutely. we definitely want to give them a significant raise. i've just spoken to thousands of teachers. there is not one teacher that could not make more money doing something else. they teach

and the nevada governor's race. the democratic incumbent there, steve sisolak, the numbers are are exactly the same. 48% for the republican, 46% for the democratic incumbent in nevada. sheriff joe lombardo is the republican candidate. he's ahead 48-46. statistically that's a dead heat. another dead heat in the nevada governor's race. so what is driving this midterm climate? well, in a midterm campaign a president's first midterm campaign his approval rating is generally the north star, and president biden is underwater in both of these states. 41% in arizona. 41% in nevada approve of joe biden's performance. but nearly 6 in 10 likely voters in each of these states disapproves of the president's performance. another warning sign for democrats as we get into the final month, just look at this. what is the top issue among likely voters? those likely to turn out 33 days from now. look at this. the economy and inflation overwhelmingly, 39% of arizona voters say it's number one. 44% of voters in nevada say the economy and

i think that part of what's going on is in some ways i think unique to nevada. its economy is so driven by tourism, by the casino industry, that shut down during the pandemic and slow to re-open and tourists to come back and talk about inflation in a macro sense. i think it is immediate and personal in nevada and the struggle that democrats have this is whether or not it is accurate or fair or right, biden administration and democrats have controlled all the levers of power. and republicans i talk to even some democrats say you are the party in power as inflation hit a four-decade high. now to be fair there's a whole bunch of factors for that happening but i think just on an instinct wall level people will point to the fact that the democrats have had the options and the opportunity to address the situation. >> politics is not fair as we all know from covering it. donald trump was president when the pandemic started and nevada was hit, the tourism industry was hit but adam laxalt focuses on that and says this state has taken a hit, please blame democrats. >> the

in a rural nevada county. officials there denying the results of the 2020 election saying they won't use voting machines because they can be hacked. nick watt is out front. >> reporter: this week nine counties in nevada started counting ballots by hand as well as by machine because this guy told them to. >> dispose of your electronic voting and tabulation machines and do not use them in any elections going forward. >> reporter: late last night nevada's supreme court ordered that hand count to stop until polls close election day. county officials vow to start again asap. jim is urging every county in nevada to go hand count only. some others might soon. none have yet. >> try to do this especially at the last minute is a recipe for disaster. >> why do you think the people want you to do it? >> i honestly don't know. there is a lot of talk about the machines being able to be hacked, the machines that we have not shown ability to do that. >> reporter: marchant did not return our calls. he is also running for nevad

extremists are not welcomed in nevada. nevada one people who are pragmatic, will be honest and tell them the truth and be transparent about their actions and decisions when it comes to elections. nevada has worked really hard to increase access. we are same-day voter registration, we have early voting which started today, we're pretty excited about it. we also have mail-in ballots, which are making elections extremely accessible throughout the state. nevada has a very urban core. we have a very strong rural committee. we also have a very strong native community, and the last election cycle, native communities have increased their engagement in voting by 25%. that's pretty incredible. we need to continue to fight for more access. we did make sure all nevadans have the opportunity to express their opinion. this is no longer about -- this is about protecting the rights for nevadans across the state, whether you're republican or democrat. we need to ensure that we're listen needing to citizens and doing what is best. unfortuna

we can go back to nevada for a second. i find this race particularly interesting because it will showcase a couple of the sort of trends that are going on more broadly like, yes, it's one single state, but first of all, if you look at those numbers and how close they are, i think that's going to give us a good barometer of where the done friday is. you're right that adam laxalt is a -- they are both blank slates compared to, say, pennsylvania for georgia where the candidates are extremely well-known. you get this purer test. the other thing it's going to show, hispanic voters we never want to make the mistake of lumping them all together, first of all, that can be offensive to people but it's not politically astute but there is one kind of hispanic voter tip a if i had in nevada and we're going to get a real good test of where they are. are they with the republican party more than they are with the democratic party? this has been one of the trends ongoing, concerns democratic strategists as it should. >> the economy looms

catherine, born and raised in nevada. she has a brand in nevada. people know her and trust her. >> senator masto is really close. we saw 46% in the poll. what does it say about your state and what voters are thinking about and what they care about? that the race is this close. after just went through that litany of reasons why it would be bad for the state. it's closer than it should be. >> look at our motto. battle born. every election is close in nevada. you can just go back historically and see that. so we know that we have to turn out the vote. that's how we've turned our state to a democratic majority in our federal delegation and in our state delegation. it's really important. that's what we're working on now. turning out that vote. being sure we're everywhere. letting people know that pragmatic problem solvers, masto, the governor, they're going to be there for them. >> sometimes when i talk to voters, what they tell me is democrats, they've seen democrats do a lot. they know they're not going to see effects of some of these things soon so t

but man, no one has been covering this race on the other tight races in nevada like the nevada independent, which is, of course, run by john rawlston, jon joins me now. john, that marchand had is really something else and the idea that, you're shaking your head. i mean, the idea that he would be in charge of the elections in that state are scary. i mean, he seems in the mark finchem category of, like, fully outright big lie adhere to it. >> well, i would say that jim marchant makes finchem looks like a statement, chris. i mean, he's so far out there in the stuff that he's said. i mean, he's fully into the qanon, he's gone to the mike lindell, my pillow, the election was stolen conventions. he has said that his own race was stolen in 2020 with donald trump's race. he's said all of this crazy stuff. he's thoroughly unqualified, and he has a chance, as you just pointed out, to win. it truly is frightening because no one, i shouldn't say no one, but most people don't know what the secretary of state does. i saw a couple of focus groups about a month and a half ago not only did no one knows who

let's go from pennsylvania to nevada. joining me now is representative steve -- democrat of nevada. congressman, thank you for being with us. let me start with early voting is underway and you are. state starting today. >> right, now a new concern swirling, following the resignation of eight of 12 employees of the election staff in nevada. who say they were being harassed and an op-ed for the washington post reads that officials expect the eventual losers of several contests, perhaps a dozen to contest the results. and they are bracing for the possibility and the conspiracy minded county commissioners might refuse to certify the results. has several threaten in 2020. how do you ensure voters there, count or the votes there are counted properly. or when some elected officials could fight to install their candidate of their choice? >> well reverend, al great to be on your show. it is the first of early voting here in nevada. i am in las vegas, i am actually at the broad acres marketplace which is an out door location. which has a ton of constituents are out, we are talking about -- th

>> so, this is a swing county in nevada. it's a place where we know, the other relatively large urban area, and it's decided elections in the past. the way that elections work is that democrats win big in clark county. which is where las vegas is. and they lose big in 15 rural counties. and what happens in washoe county is very, very meaningful. republicans have a slight registration edge right now in washout county. it's one and a half percent. what happens, is the democrats have about 3% edge. so we don't know, obviously how those ballots are gonna translate into votes. but if the past is prologue, it means the democrats are holding their own in -- they're gonna need to. it looks like the margins in clark county, las vegas, isn't as big as it usually is. , let's also talk quickly, about a secretary of state candidate jim marchand. the state supreme court, on friday ruling that his unprecedented to bypass voting machine, was in fact illegal, it seems as if not sean wanted to spread voting by hand across nevada county. what

she said nevada's -- their hot pick up. they believe that's the state where they can pick up, have the greatest chance of winning the senate through nevada. for laxalt, he feels he has momentum right now. he has national republicans in town yesterday in reno, rallying for him. he says he's making gains with latinos. now i talked to cortez masto about that. she called him a liar, on that note. it's getting really feisty here. they are getting a little bit in the mud. you know, there are 16 days left. this is really going to come down right to the end. >> natasha, what i was gonna say is, you've been reporting on political campaigns as long as i have, i take statements like that at this point with a grain of salt when someone is saying they are feeling super confident, 16 days out. so much of this will come down to which voters are able to turn out. we are now at the point where this becomes a turnout game. i will come back to you on that question. i want to make sure we get to neil in new hampshire, where we are seeing a tig

that's the nevada independent. how reliable at this point is the polling on the race in nevada. and in your view, are the polling averages that have tended to show cortez masto doomed, are they too over the top, and incorrect? >> first, joy, you can trust the nevada independent. will [laughs] but seriously, listen, i don't put much thoughts in any polling right now. we have already had people vote. we've had about a quarter of 1 million people vote in nevada. i've track these early numbers very closely. and it looks like the democrats are holding their registration in nevada. there is no signs of a red wave. there's no signs of a big democratic wipeout coming. it doesn't mean it can't happen of course, joy. the hispanic numbers are interesting. at 60% that you saw from the univision poll is about what cortez masto, and democratic internal show. there is no way, that cortez masto, can be close in this race. whether it's two points ahead, or even as the new york times poll shows, if she's not doing really, really well among hispanics. adam laxalt only 15 or 16 points behind her wi

what are you seeing in nevada? >> look, unfortunately, democrats continue to, you know, support this program and they're just not standing with police. outside of election years, of course, you see joe biden doing a turn-around, my opponent trying to pretend that, you know, she supports the police. but the reality is that all the law enforcement in the state supported her when she ran in '16, and they've abandoned her, they switch to me. i'm not the one in office, she's the incumbent, because they know that she was not there for them when they needed her in 2020 during the blm riots, during all of this heated democrat rhetoric that keeps going after police and makes our communities less safe. and by the way, it's a big reason why the hispanic community is moving to us so aggressively. i mean, she won that group by 42 the % in '16. we've seen polls with her inside of 10 today. that's because of inflation, that's because of the border, that's because of law enforcement issues, that's because of school closures -- mar

in nevada, that's an issue a inflation. nevada has some of the worst inflation in the country, gas prices around $5 a gallon here in las vegas area. polling has shown that republicans generally, and in laxalt specifically, have had the advantage on that issue so far, so the challenge is twofold. first, she has to confront the economic issues -- she knows nevadans care about. we talk about that in our interview is the day. she had an event with latina business owners just today, which was a significant focus. that's issue number one. her second challenge is to try to expand the number of issues, the sleigh of issues that voters here are considering, as they start to fill up melts and go early. to do that, she's been talking about abortion rights access, spending a lot of money on television, on abortion related advertisements. that's obviously a big issue in a state that has traditionally protected abortion rights. he's also been trying to neutralize laxalt on the issue of crime. she's been doing that by linking him to the e

i'm talking like candidates in arizona, nevada, michigan and minnesota. let's throw in swing states where the secretary is approved by the governor. and florida, where incumbent republican front runner ron desantis has -- and in pennsylvania, where republican nominee doug mastriano has outright denied the 2020 election results himself. that is 91 electoral votes potentially at stake if they are overseeing presidential elections in 2024. that matters because the electoral college is how we elect the president of the united states. for context, president biden's margin of victory in 2020 was 74 electoral votes. you do the math. and if you think cooler heads prevail in the general election, take a look at nevada, where former state legislature jim marchand is the republican nominee for secretary of state. if you are not familiar with, him please allow me to introduce you. >> we have in nevada elected anybody since 2006. they have been installed by the deep state cabal. we have had no say so in our election process in nevada. >> you are going to elect me as y

joining us is nevada independent ceo john raulston, it's great to see you. let's talk about nevada, the economy, gas, rental prices, among the highest in the country, tourism dependent in the state is still recovering from the pandemic. it's a tough environment for any incumbent. how is this shaping up? >> you laid it out pretty well. add to that that we're a purple state anyway, as you know. registration is pretty close. you have an incumbent who is not as well-known as other senators. you have the president's numbers in nevada pretty bad for a purple state. they are under 40%. some democratic internal polling shows that. that's a prescription for a close race no matter what the republican opponent is. she has run what both sides agree is a good campaign. maybe one of the better ones in the state. she's a very disciplined person. she's more of a workhorse than a showhorse, as i have said many times. adam has benefits from a ton of outside money that has come in. he has been able to offset her huge fund-raising advantage over him. >> she is the first latina

in nevada there is no clear leader. why do you think one race appears to be so much closer than another? >> well, mark kelly is frankly, a stronger incumbent. he has a biography people are familiar with, an astronaut maried to gabby giffords. and he's running against a weaker opponent than the incumbent in nevada. the nevada race is much more competitive. look, i think nevada, especially in nonpresidential years, it's just a harder state, frankly, for democrats p. we've seen this before, certainly 2014 was a really good year for the gop in nevada. i think nevada could be the hardest state in the country for a democratic incumbent. this is why pennsylvania becomes so important, too, guys. because if nevada does flip, then the question becomes can republicans still hold pennsylvania? if they can, they have a one seat majority in all likelihood. if pennsylvania flips to democrats, it's going to be the same split it is today. 50/50. >> it is an interesting election season for sure. thank you for being with us. >> appreciate

joining me ceo of the nevada independent, political analyst, all-around nevada political expert. john, look, you know nevada politics better than anyone else. how do you read this race a week out? >> i think it's close. every poll has shown the real issue i think for the democrats is as you know, they usually build up a significant lead in the early voting period which is much more predictive in nevada. it's about 3% or so statewide. election day is going to be even more important here than it usually is. the key to this whole thing is the independent vote here, steve, which has gotten much bigger over the last couple of years and how they lean and they are 8% for laxalt in that poll you put up there. if they go double digits for the republican candidate, i think catherine cortez masto is going to lose. >> all right. i am sure we'll be seeing and hearing a lot from you over the next eight days. thank you for taking a minute and updating us right now. >>> coming up, a 2020 rematch. what midterm voters say about the possibility of former president biden and president biden running

nevada is a contest. i want to point out, historically, nevada is one of the few states where democrats are under polled. in other words polling tends to understate democratic -- in nevada historically. so, i think it's going to be a very competitive race, and at the end of the day, we're gonna pull it out. but this is a hard fought campaign. midterms, generally go against the presidents party. i think we have a lot that is working for us. we have some things that are working against us. so, everybody needs to be all hands on deck and we are at defcon for. i just came back from a rally. i saw extraordinary enthusiasm, for merrick 2018 and almost presidential level enthusiasm for people going out and canvassing in some of our precincts in virginia. >> let me bring up something that might alert things to a deaf con five level of concern or that is marjorie taylor greene. she's got a warning for kevin mccarthy when republicans retake that my -- house. she said new york times magazine quote i think that to be

it's the economy, stupid, and that is the case here in nevada. it's the state with the highest inflation in the country. gas prices in the las vegas metro area around $5 a gallon and cortez masto is in a tough place. she defended her vote for the american rescue plan pointing out they need it had and they needed the money, the infusion of resources, defending the bipartisan infrastructure bill, what they have pointed to as inflationary. she doesn't want to get punished for the national party, the perception democrats are somehow behind inflation or these high prices. and so she's trying to keep her distance from her own party. as you can see here when i asked her what she'd like from the president, joe biden, in terms of helping her out in this race. you have a party that has your back here, a president from your party what would you like to see from him? would you like to see him campaign for you? he was talking about abortion. was that helpful? what can he do to help you. >> i can tell you what i hear from nevadans and that's my priority and it
