when it comes to san francisco-when we look at socal, not san francisco, public transit ridership has been going way way way down and there are so many people even though public transit ridership is going up in the bay area, overall in the state of california public transit is taking a nose dive for the past 20 years and i didn't think what that says is california-we have not built it to work on public transit and when people dont want to keep riding public transit because they don't feel dignified, it isn't convenient and not high enough frequency and doesn't get you where you go and once you get a car you are like why do i want to downgrade to the bus or train. even though it is more sustainable and less traffic violence people don't want to ride public transit. we talk how important it is but nobody reads it and (inaudible) when it comes to san francisco we need to expand service so more of the bus lines are more frequent and when it comes to the bay area as a whole we need to work with caltrain, bart with the other transit authorities to make people that drive their car every day

i'm director of san francisco national cemetery here on the presidio of san francisco. this was designated as the first national cemetery on the west coast in 1884.however its history dates back to the 1850s along with the us army presence on the presidio itself. we have 26,300 gravesites that we maintain and thereare 32,000 individuals buried in this cemetery . the veterans who are buried here span all the war period going back to what we call the indian war, spanish-american war, world war i to korea, vietnam and then as recent as operation iraqifreedom . we have 39 medal of honor recipients. more than 400 buffalo soldiers buried here who are the african-americansoldiers who served with the ninth and 10th calvary . there's so many veterans buried here, each withtheir own unique history and contribution . one of those individuals is all equipment prior. that's not her real name, that's her stage name and she was an actor during the civil war and while she was working she was approached by sympathizers who offered her a sum of money to cost jefferson davis on stage she

san francisco rising. >> hi, you are watching san francisco rising. reimagining our city. he's with us to talk about how our library's economic recover. mr. lambert, welcome to the show. >> thank you. i'm glad to be here. >> i know it's been difficult to have books going virtual. have we recovered? >> yes, we are on our way. our staff stepped up big time during the pandemic to respond to the health emergency. since last may, we have been able to steadily increase in person access to library facilities. currently we are at 95% of our precovid hours of operation. in the coming weeks we are going to fully restore all of our hours. we have four branches that we are going to bring back to seven day service. they are currently operating at 5 days a week and we are going to go to every tag line and i know all the foot traffic has not returned to san francisco, but our library is seeing a resurgence coming back. >> can we talk about programs after covid? >> absolutely, that is part and parcel of our mission. we we

i grew up in san francisco. my family did in the they came to the country as refugees from a long war. my father at the time was a medical student studying in greece and protested against the ethiopian government revoked his citizenship and lost everything. he and my mother came to san francisco to build a new life. when they came they believed in the american dream. through work and education you can do anything. my dad instead of being able to continue his work in medical school no credits transferred worked 30 years as a taxi driver and they sent us to catholic school. my family was religious and thought it was the best way for us to move forward. i did not agree with everything but i believed being a person for other, being of service and being the change you want to see in the world. i got my msw from berkeley and working to get folks off the street and into recovery and helping those who were incarcerated rebuild their lives. that's why i have done the work over 20 years it help make san francisco a better

empty homes in san francisco. to those who point at that number and say we shouldn't be shocked and do something about it because some categories of the 61,000 may not be available for rent. i think they're missing the point. no one is claiming that 61,473 homes can be moved into tomorrow. there are homes in disrepair and nobody can live there. there are homes that are purchased and someone is -- or rented or purchased and someone is scheduled to move in there. there are different categories and i think the bla report has been up front has have all the advocates who talk about the need to address empty homes in san francisco. it doesn't change the fact that there are 61,473 is our best estimate of how many empty homes in san francisco and there are tens of thousands of those that could be occupied but are signature vacant. i'm alarmed by the increase in the "for rent" and particularly concerned as we see in mork city that we have a phenomenon developing here where some landlords are stubbornly clinging to their id

you know float week is a time honored tradition in san francisco. we know every year during october, all of the sudden we hear the planes flying through. but fleet week is in the about the extraordinary talent of the blue angel its is so much more. about developing a relationship with our military, the people who put their lives on the line to make sure that we retain the rights and freedoms we enjoy in the united states of america. when i think about how wonderful fleet week is to see folks walking in uniforms and the time they take to talk about the work they do. the opportunity to visit the ships and tour and know the sacrifices that are being made, day in and out, people who are not able to be around families regular low wlo are spending their time every day to serve and protect us. and when we appreciate about fleet week other than loving the blue angel system how it is expanded and become such a community event. how it brought people together weather the band in japantown and all over the city and the castro for the first time this year; [appl

and when we talk about san francisco as a whole, we always talk about how resilient san francisco is because of our ability to not only survive through earthquakes and pandemics, but our ability to thrive. during the late 1800s, the inventer of the cable car, you know, it was said that they invented the cable car as a result of seeing the horse and carriage struggle up san francisco hills. what a challenge it was. and so this cable car came to be and as a result, san francisco, i think, because of this and so many other incredible events and milestones has been known as an innovative city, a place where things created, a place where people look to for ideas and i want to thank market street railway for protecting and supporting and engaging and making sure that history is not forgotten. today we celebrate 75 years of saving the cable cars in our city.
