while that was happening here, they were very busy in idaho. because the fbi, local police and the idaho state police, were putting together the information they had to form the probable cause to go before a judge to get that arrest warrant. it was the dna, that source tells cnn, along with the vehicle. once they got that arrest warrant, a criminal complaint was filed yesterday. four charges of first-degree murder, and also a charge of burglary. breaking and the entering of that home for the intent to commit a felony in that home. he was arrested, he is right behind me now at the monroe county correctional facility. he had a hearing this morning but he has no bond. the next hearing will be a hearing on tuesday for extradition. will he be extradited voluntarily? or will the governor have to step in front with the state of idaho to get the proceeding going for him to get back there? >> yeah. that is a big question. we will have to wait and see what ends up happening on that front. but tell us a little more about what is next, right? there's a lot

at the very same time, authorities in idaho, the police department, the idaho state police, the fbi were putting together the probable cause for that arrest warrant for a judge to sign off on it. and our cnn reporting is that a source is telling us what they found was that his dna was at the scene, but in addition to that, that white car that has become front and center in all of this, that it was his car. and they did confirm today at the press conference that they do have the car. we don't know what jurisdiction, however. but once they got that arrest warrant, once the criminal complaint was filed and it was filed yesterday, we understand, they moved in at 1:30 this morning and arrested him in albrightsville. he did have a court appearance earlier today. no bond, no bail. he's housed here until an extradition hearing next week. but one more link to northeast pennsylvania here, cnn has learned that he graduated in may from desalles university with a master's degree in criminal justice, so went on for more doctorate work in the state of washington, it appears. >> that's what it appears.

hours of november 13 the four university of idaho students were murder. and today investigators were 15 minutes away from the crime scene they were raiding the suspect's home in pullman washington where he was a graduate student pursuing a phd in criminal justice at washington state. as we take a look more at some of the documents that have been released. we know he's 28 years old he recently had a birthday and when i was looking at the date of birth it was one week after these murders so we have a lot of questions still here tonight, did he come here to celebrate his birthday, was he still in washington state was he here for the holidays, those questions are not answered but we will wait for more back to you. james: thank you laura ingle that's welcome to the show retired nypd inspector paul morrow thank you for joining us, obviously the suspect deserves the presumption of innocence like anybody else but based on what you've seen what we've learned how solid does the case against him look? >> obviously the police here have held their c cards close to the

the university of idaho is on the idaho side of the state line, and washington university just over the state line on the washington side, and we were at an apartment complex that is home to only graduate students and their families, and there's police activity around an apartment that we have been told is in connection to the murder suspect, kohberger. police -- washington state university police searching that apartment at the request of the moscow police because moscow police do not have jurisdiction on the washington side. so washington state university police assisting now in that investigation and searching his apartment. we also understand now in a post that has been removed from reddit, that kohberger's arrest right after kohberger's arrest was made public, that a -- he was a student investigator associated with desal university and he was seeking participation in a research project to understand how emotions and psychological traits influence decision-making when committing a crime. that same post said, in particular, the study seeks to understand the story behind your most rec

and while this was going on here, in idaho they were actually -- the fbi and the local police, idaho state police, they were getting together the information so they would have the probable cause to go before a judge to get the arrest warrant. and the source tells cnn that the arrest warrant probable cause is based on dna, his dna being at the scene and also that white car that we've heard so much about, that was scene through some video close to the apartment at the time this was happening. that was his car. well once they got that arrest warrant, the criminal complaint was filed and we heard from the press conference it was filed yesterday. four counts of first-degree murder. also a burglary charge and once that was filed, they went in this morning at 1:30 a.m. to a gated community and they arrested him and he is here now waiting an extradition hearing which will be on tuesday. >> stand by. i want to bring in jon miller. what more could you tell us, jon, about the suspect and this dramatic arrest, more than a month after these murders. >> well, wolf, this came together really in la

the suspect needs to be extradited from pennsylvania to idaho and until he is extradited back to idaho, the details of the probable cause affidavit are not allowed to be released. once he arrives back in idaho, those details will come out, but they will be at a minimum, they will add a minimum establish the probable cause primarily was dna the factor that identified the suspect as the one that committed these crimes. however, the probable cause affidavit will likely not include information about sources and investigated methods. from there, it falls to the suspect and his legal team. will the suspect, for example, waive his miranda rights and become a cooperating suspect? in this case we would rely, law enforcement would rely on the suspect to give information about the location of the murder weapon and the motive. but this is primarily in the hands of the suspect and his legal team. gillian: i've got a couple of follow-up questions based on what you just told us. the first question quick, we know his extradition is scheduled for january 3rd, but he could, as i understand it, unilatera

his extradition back to idaho is expected next week. the arrest caps nearly seven weeks of fear and frustration for families of the four murdered students. >> this is the first bit of joy that we've had in close to seven weeks. we hope that there is-- they've picked the right guy and that gives us hope. and we haven't had hope for a long time. >> reporter: kaylee goncalves, madison mogen, xana kernodel, and ethan chapin, all stabbed multiple times as they slept inside this house near the campus. despite surveillance video showing the victims in the hours before they were murdered and despite thousands of tips pouring into the moscow police department, there appeared, at least publicly, to be little movement on the case-- no suspects, no arrests. as the grief mounted and many students left campus. >> no arrest will ever bring back these young students. however, we do believe justice will be found through the criminal process. >> reporter: the district attorney who will eventually prosecute the suspect says an arrest does not mean an end

and a judge has ordered his extra dition back to idaho. joining me now is nbc news correspondent gadi schwartz and jim carve gnaw, retired special agent in charge and msnbc contributor. gadi, you have the latest on this case. what more do we know about this arrest? >> we understand that bryan kohberger was taken into custody by a special team of police and fbi agents on an interesting felony warrant for murder. the arrest seems to have happened a little south of mount pocono, thousands of miles away from his home in pullman, washington, which is about ten miles away from that horrific crime scene. we also know that a white hyundai elantra that matched the description of the one that police was looking for was found at the home where he was arrested. so far, police have not said what led them to this arrest, we're expecting to hear more details at the press conference, in about a half an hour. and the big questions will be whether this may have been the car or possibly a dna match from genetic genealogy, or possibly one of the 20,000 or so

early on the idaho police said they believed the victims were targeted. but they were very thin on putting out any other information to elaborate further on that. what does that statement tell you? >> well, i mean, they're not going to put a lot of information out. bad guys watch television too. they have to be very careful what they put out and, you know, what you know at the beginning or what you think you know at the beginning of an investigation, as more and more evidence is uncovered, as the investigation proceeds, things do change. and so those were initial statements. but, obviously, they continue to work. they develop a lot of information that eventually lead them to the suspect. it will be interesting to know what exactly led them to the suspect and what relationship, if any, this individual had. why was he even in idaho? >> josh, now to you, i have a question for you. i know that you -- you helped break the story and, you know, the fact that there is an arrest here and, again, we should mention the person who was arrested is brian christopher ko

in the quadruple slaying of the idaho students around 3:00 a.m. this morning. it took thousands of man-hours to lead cops to that moment. the work of the moscow police, idaho state police, even the f.b.i., working side by side to finally unlock the mystery but it's not all unlocked yet. how did they do it? straight out to brian foley, former homicide detective with connecticut state police. my understanding is there was dna at the scene and they found the car but what about this. think about this. he had according to sources a seat belt infraction in moscow? he's driving around in moscow what do you think was the tiptip ing point? >> the captain at the moscow police department said a few weeks ago they were narrowing down on a suspect and he could see the case coming to a close, and then look at what the chief, chief frey, he did a good job in moscow, what he said, he thanked local pd, and others who threw the net on this guy but he went out of his way, and you think about all the thousand ten tentacles, he wind out of his way to thank the tech people, he said

they want to protect what also just -- there's a death penalty in idaho. it could very well be a death penalty case. so they're just focused on that. what we're starting to see from his own social media presence and his own media presence is in your worst sort of interpretation of is a diabolical intent to play a fantasy what it is to be a mass murderer and getting information about how to do that. this has happened before and how to successfully murder from others who have done it before and we don't know if that is as an alternative to him knowing the victims or as a way for him to go after one or if not all of the victims who he -- who he might have known. that is the big question right now. we all want to answer that question because we try to give meaning to these horrors and meaning for the family members. i mean, that's -- you know, they want meaning for it and to believe he just planned this out and showed up or was stalking some house for a random reason and kills these young adults is all horrific but just makes it so evil as well. >> absolutely.
