warnock bumps up by 2.3 points. warnock walker by only two tenths of a. point so, the democrats improve and they nearly pick off a at county tonight. they nearly take another one of these -- they have been picking warnock, one or two, of every election it seems, the last couple of decades. they almost had fayette tonight. they come with forged 91 votes. but again, it's not at all what walker wanted to see if that county tonight. all the voters in in paulding county. we showed you this one. earlier -- warnock moves up by more than that. again, it was more improvement here for warnock and for walker. this is a core republican county. we talked about walker needing to move up four or five points in places like this. all of the vote is in right now -- i should say, all the voters in in walton county. take a look at this one. it's another core republican county. warnock walkers up a little. warnock is -- it's a wash. we are still waiting on some votes here. but the stories is consistently the same. the biggest republican counties in the -- state the biggest re

warnock won by a little more than a hundred. and one month ago it was walker by a little more than 100. so small margins right there. but there is a bigger story right here that i want to tell you about that i think really illustrates what we saw last night and into this morning. i'm going to show you the counties where herschel walker overperformed what he did one month ago. and you're going look at this map and say hey, that's a lot of territory. walker did really well and still lost. not necessarily. first of all, these are all rural counties mostly. small rural counties with not much of a population. so yes, herschel walker did a little bit better, but not enough to make that much of a difference. also, there was a libertarian candidate one month ago. 2% of the vote got spread around. but look at where he did not overperform, around atlanta, around columbus, around augusta, around savannah. what do all those areas have in common? let me show you the population centers in georgia. the bigger the circle, the greater the popula

he's a warnock supporter. thank you for joining us. with less than two hours to go before polls close, what are you seeing with turnout and voter enthusiasm today? >> well, what i've seen throughout the whole process is voters are engaged, voters are excited, voters are voting. my dad used to say a voteless people is a powerless people and one of the most important steps that we must take is that first step through the ballot box and i hope we'll see after this evening based of numbers of the secretary of state's office this is one of the highest turnouts ever for an election of this type. >> yeah, very significant indeed. this race was incredibly tight in november's again general ele. this time walker has the full backing of brian kemp. how close do you expect this runoff will actually turn out to be? >> well, i don't know any of us can predict what that may be. the hope is that the people of georgia want to elect a person who looks forward. i'm not saying that herschel walker looks backward, i'm just saying that, you know, herschel w

this is the warnock coalition. 36% of warnock's voters on november 8th were white. 52% of the warnock voters were african american. 8% latino. take a look at the warnock voters by age. so young voters 18 to 29-year-olds made up 16% of warnock's vote. 25% of warnock's voters were 30 to 44. 21% were senior citizens. let's look at the reverse now with herschel walker. among walker voters, 87% of walker voters were white. only 5% of walker voters were black. he's obviously looking to get that white vote turnout since it's part of his -- a huge part of his coalition. the best category here for walker, 45 to 64-year-olds made up 44% of walker voters. nearly 30% were 65 and older. he's looking for a whiter, older electorate to show up today on election day. and then of course we asked the importance of party control in the senate to your vote. among warnock voters back in november, 74% of warnock voters said it's very important. it was true for both candidates. but look at this. walker voters, even more of them thought that party control was very important to their vote. 82% of walker voters

walk us through what got warnock across the finish line. >> raphael warnock, the margin is 95,000 votes. that's three times what it was roughly the 37,000 vote lead in the first round one month ago. there were two counties that flipped, just two in the entire state that flipped that voted for herschel walker this time. tiny counties though. you can see washington county here. warnock won by about 100 votes. one month ago it was walker up by 100 votes. it is the same situation in baldwin county, but the real story i think in this election this time around happened around the atlanta area. the urban and suburban atlanta area for sure. i can show you some of the margins here. you can take fulton county which is the most populus county in the state. raphael warnock with a huge, huge lead there. 52%. he got 280,000 votes. he had a big margin there. a little bit less of a margin one month ago but you can see what a difference the larger population makes. there's a story going on in georgia and it's happening in some other states around the country as well. i want to show you the population gr

does warnock owe this win to black voters? >> yes, let me tell what you warnock did? what he was able to do is build this broad base coalition. he had labor union workers, progressive whites, independents, he was able to pull this broad based coalition. but without a doubt his base vote were black voter, black voters came out in record numbers in the pea rmetro area also the rural areas. so black voters showed up and showed out on this particular election. >> let's talk about black women, though. >> black women did what we do. i think it's really interesting. i think in this election we saw a narrative that was saying not just black men would not come out, what we saw is that black men came out and supported warnock in record numbers. black women and men were on the ground leading these efforts that it was grass root organizations. i can't tell you how many organizations from fraternities to sororities to civic engagement groups. what we saw was clearly a collective effort and we saw black people step up, stand up and do a lot of organizers. and black women are on the

if you can talk about the significance of senator raphael warnock, reverend will fear warnock's victory last night -- reverend raphael warnock's victory last night, and the lessons learned. >> i am so excited and happy about the outcome. a number of things, one, it is historic. here is -- he has a full six-year term to serve in the senate, an african-american male from a state that we know historicallyhat blacmen and women have actually been killed just for trying to register to vote. a state that has been on the forefront ofiteral leading voter suppression, even intensifng that in the lt few years. historical significance ound the fight to vote. i also think it has significance because it has a national political implication that what we know is that the democrats have 51 seats, which now they have freedom -- far more freedom and space in terms of the committee appointments to be able to actually get judges through, to be able to get a point is through, and even put pressure on folks like sinema and manchin who stood and the way of certain legislation, like voting legislation. that wil

what was warnock's brand? how did he do that? how did he run stronger than stacey abrams in those red counties? >> so one of the things that warnock did especially during this runoff is, yes, he was speaking to his base just like herschel walker was speaking to his base, but warnock was able to speak to different segments of his base in their own language, for example, he had events just for the labor unions so if you're a union worker across the state, you saw warnock speaking directly to you. he had events just for the asian american pacific islander community speaking directly to them. he had his campaign literature translated into korean and thai language, something we did not see from herschel walker's campaign. i could go down the list, black men, black women, students. he visited so many college campuses and spoke to students, so warnock just really was talking to all these different segments in ways that i think paid off across the state. >> tia mitchell of "the atlanta journal-constitution." we'll see you back in washing

warnock got nearly 59% here. a fantastic number for warnock out of gwinnett county back in november. he jumped it up to 62% last night. herschel walker meanwhile fell from 38.6 to 37.9. the kinds of differences that make all the difference in an election like this and you saw it throughout the atlanta metro area. take a look at cobb county. another biggy. warnock's campaigned thrilled with 56.8 they got in november. built that nearly three points to 59.5% last night. so in one county after another in the immediate atlanta metro area, warnock actually met his november number and then built on it and walker in most cases actually slid back a little from what he got. that's the single biggest ingredient and if you zoom out, the bigger picture on this. in terms of georgia. why we now talk about georgia as a competitive state politically. joe biden carrying it in 2020. we expect it to very much be on the map of competitive states in 2024. has everything to do with this atlanta metro area. so striking to me. wept back

look at raphael warnock's number. look, that's today in the runoff. 76.5% of the vote, look at what it was on november 8th. he was at 73.5%. he overperformed here. okay? take a look next door, in cobb county, back in november in general, he had 56.8% of the vote there. today and cobb county he overperformed his general election performance. 59.3%. we can go over to gwinnett county, today he had 62.1%. back on november 8th? warnock was at 59.8%. you see, he overperformed where the voters were. and in three of those largest counties, herschel walker underperformed what he did just four weeks ago. this was a battle for suburban, independent voters in this critical area. in georgia. and the atlantic area, and the critical, suburban population here. and warnock show that he had the ability to actually increase his performance, precisely where walker needed to do it. remember, brian kemp got some 200,000 more votes just four weeks ago than walker. his critical mission was to find some of the votes in this area, and bring th

what we can't see, however, is what warnock is doing. fulton county is only two-thirds of the votes in. warnock is going to get a ton of votes in fulton country. where weeks ago, where was he? he was down about eight points. walker is going to gain a little bit there. is that enough to hang on? this is the fundamental question of this run-off race tonight. similar story in gwinett, this change -- hang on, laura, 99% reporting in gwinnet county. in realtime now, that number is not 99. you are not entirely checked in, warnock is at 62 four week ago. okay, he's at 58, shy of 59%. watch how that goes and cobb county, warnock shy of 60%. this is a chain, that's stuck on 53% and 63%. this is a recent dump now in cobb county. so a little bit of a difference there from four weeks ago is where he is tonight. look, if warnock hangs onto a two or three-point edge in a place like cobb county, that may be enough to win the entire state based on raw numbers. it is changing in realtime, laura, your difference is 6900 votes and warnock is hanging onto .

that is the coalition raphael warnock is representing. if raphael warnock is georgia, he is also the democratic party. and joining us now is one of the 11 black people ever to sit in the senate, who also is in the democratic party. our senator from new jersey, cory booker. senator booker, it's great to see you. thank you for being here, thank you for being with us to discuss this moment in american history. it really does feel like an inflection point, as we think about these two parties. and i wonder what lesson you think people should take away from the events of last night, as it concerns democrats and republicans. >> there's not just one lesson. there is a lot of things that worked, in raphael warnock's favor from, as mitch mcconnell said, we have a candidate selection problem -- to the fact that we got so much done. here is a guy to use in the senate. and he was able to get extraordinary things done. and i joked with sherrod brown today. he said he got a call after he passed the child tax credit, the biggest middle class tax credit i

but warnock did do that. so walker failed there to contain warnock. and the second place where things went wrong for herschel walker this this race is this next level of county, next ring of in the metro area getting into more of the 40 minutes outside of atlanta. here you see big size counties that are still republican giving example here. cher key county, very republican. 45 minutes north of atlanta. walker wins it last night, but what was his challenge here? it wasn't just to win it. it was to win it by a very big margin because here's what you're seeing. this is the governor's race. brian kemp last november, kemp won easily over stacey abrams. in this county, cherokee county, the biggest republican county in the state, kemp won by 50 points over abrams. meanwhile in the same night last november, walker won the county but his margin was less than 40 points. so the challenge last night for walker was to get that margin closer to kemp's margin than it was to the original margin against warnock. you can see he really didn't move the needle. as a matte

you heard senator warnock there. that pushes back against what you heard from brad raffensperger, from brian kemp, from gabriel sterling. what did you make of that as you were covering what the voting efforts looked like on the ground? >> i think it's important to note there's a lot of different factors going on in georgia's elections right now. you're seeing enthusiasm from voters in a polarized state. at the same time you're seeing a lot of energy put into turning people out to the polls while voting laws have changed across georgia. this runoff we're experiencing this year was four weeks after the midterm election whereas in past years, 2021, just last year, it was nine weeks. that compression was something that warnock and his allies point to as a sign of making it more difficult for elections to be administered. whereas secretary of state brad raffensperger and his staff will point to the efforts that counties and the states offices have put into administering the elections and making sure people can vote. so th

he was doing marginally better, warnock, in rural georgia. what does that say for long-term strategery for republicans, because let's be clear, rural georgia isn't all white. there are a lot of black people out there too. >> a lot of the african american counties was stellar and senator warnock did better in those communities. to your point it shows the problem in the republican strategy in that the notion was maybe they can mobilize enough of their voters. it is a pure mobilization strategy and frankly a voter suppression strategy on the other side. you see as you know, even in the republican rural counties they were not coming out for herschel walker. they were not excited about him. when you took kemp off the ballot, at least enough of those voters were staying home whereas senator warnock was running an incredible campaign and appealing to voters across the state and it shows in those maps. >> yeah, and to come back to you, don, getting rid of mail-in voting as an option, so basically democrats have three bites at the apple, mail, early a

that number is 52% for warnock. if warnock wins next week, here's the thing. it is huge for democrats. it is huge for the balance of power because it would give democrats a real majority in the senate. no more joe manchin and kirsten sinema controlling the runoff in the senate. diane gallagher is "out front" live and i know you have spent the day talking to so many voters. how energized are they about the runoff? >> reporter: erin, the voters here in georgia are dedicated, they're determined and, look, they're overcoming hurdles like the long wait times, like the compressed early voting schedule to make sure that their voices are heard. they told me technically the balance of the senate doesn't hang on georgia anymore, but they understand from people who support both candidates how much this impacts not just the nation but the people in georgia for the next six years. >> i've never seen it like this. >> reporter: long lines once again wrapping around polling places. >> i started around the corner. >> reporter: as voters go above waiting hours. >> about two hou

warnock with a 25-point advantage. has good judgment. 17-point advantage. that's what on the warnock side it boils down. >> and despite that the race is close because it is georgia and a key battleground state. even know the senate control is not hanging on georgia it matters tremendously. but the real question is those ticket splitters back in november who voted for brian kemp and then senator warnock do they leave the votes the same or change because of the check on the biden administration? the democrats are not overly confident because the voting period was shorter so there are some unknowns and no doubt that some republicans are not thrilled with how walker is campaigned. he is absent. >> the entire reason to jeff's point is 200,000 voters voted for kemp and not warnock. are those folks coming back out for the guy that they dissed on the ballot the first time and the folks that marked a straight republican going to come out with so much not at stake for the republicans, meaning the senate majority. if you look at what's invested outspent 2 to 1. who ar

warnock exceeding his november totals. the other part of the story and the other place where walker fell short is when you get outside the metro area here to more of these sort of fringe atlanta metro counties here, a place like forsyth county, you see walker wins the county, but take a look here. how does that compare to how he did in november? it's a little bit better than how he did in november. but, of course, warnock also managed to improve in forsyth county. there was a libertarian who got 3% of the vote but not last night. this is how brian kemp, the republican governor who easily won the governor's election in november, this is how he did in forsyth county. he got 72%. that was walker's other challenge coming into last night. in a place like forsyth county, big republican county where he had run far behind kemp in november, he needed to get his number last night up close to where kemp's was. and he didn't do that. he didn't do it in forsyth. he didn't do it next door in cherokee county. he didn't do it in this whol
