still here in the bay area. and after every single storm. well, things the way they are now we've got more issues on the way out there tonight that it is cloudy, a continuing, but we've got a storm system off the coastline that is going to bring some more heavy rainfall. not that far away. the national weather service change the watches to warnings tonight that will extend until 10:30pm, tonight flood warnings in effect, expecting the possibility of more flooding all around the bay area. flood watches continue until tomorrow afternoon. we're watching the russian river very closely expected to crest around 32.9 feet that watershed there. they've had over 2, even 3 inches of rainfall and all that water is going to work its way down the hill. so that river expected to crest somewhere right around midnight tonight and into early tomorrow morning. also, the russian river hop lynn expected to crest right around 15.2 feet. minor flooding expected there, but we could see another rise in those rivers and we get another storm system. in fact, that's e

almost most of the bay area too. as we're going to see rapid rise in our local creeks and streams and even our streets, all that heavy rainfall. we've had some rain rates over 2 and a half inches with this storm system and really is a monster that is spinning off the coastline. we've got a long way to go. here's the cold front headed up toward the bay area. moving through right now. but on the backside, it's almost like spokes on a bike. you get one band come through. and then yet another band, another band. that's what's going to play out overnight tonight. so there's a long way to go to 9 when you see these storms roll through, there's a possibility of some thunderstorms. we've seen some lightning strikes embedded in the storm system so watching for that tonight and you can already begin to see another band of rain beginning to develop on the backside of this. and doppler just beginning to get an eye on it. but heavier storms now pushing into the east bay also into the south bay right now as the storms move on thro

widespread thunderstorms across the entire bay area. we see the chance for a few scattered showers and a thunderstorm over the rest of the evening. this makes it look much more impressive than it's going to be. nothing to be concerned about. however , by early tomorrow morning, before the sun comes up we will track the rain approaching the coast , and it's likely to move and as we approach the peak of rush-hour once again. widespread rain is likely across the bay area for much of wednesday. most of us will have light to moderate rain. north of the golden gate, the rain will be heavier. specific relations coming up in just a few minutes. whatever we get will be on top of the rain we picked up in the last 24 hours. over three inches of rain. an inch of rain from downtown san francisco and danville with the storm clusters moving through around lunchtime. only three quarters of an inch . the santa cruz mountains did not overachieve on rainfall. half an inch in santa rosa. 4/10 of an inch in san jose. the system delivered on gusty wind. abou

thank you for watching nbc bay area news at 4:30. we are beginning with an ongoing microclimate weather alert. the bay area is preparing for more violent weather while just beginning to recover from yesterday's powerful storm. it's killed at least two people, caused damage, and is threatening to flood communities near a major bay area river. let's show you some of the most dramatic video coming into our newsroom. first we're taking you south along the coast. you're looking at pounding waves taking out the capitola pier. now, to drone video that shows the storm surge. significant water swamping homes along the popular capitola waterfront. farther south, a similar issue in aptos. part of the aptos pier has fallen into the ocean. to give you a sense of the waves' strength, take a look at this video taken near pleasure point in santa cruz, washing ashore. now, more footage from the coast. high tide this morning with six-foot waves pummeling santa cruz. the wharf and boardwalk off limits. here's the view from the other side of the boardwa

across the bay area, this is for saturday. a quarter to about one inch for most of us except for guerneville. they're going to be two-plus inches. we add on sunday's totals and overall for this storm system, we're looking for anywhere from one to three inches on average. those bull's-eyes right up towards the north bay and the santa cruz mountains except for guerneville. notice that. it's in that gray color. that's going to be four-plus inches. i have those flood details here coming up momentarily. but i also wanted to let you know with this weekend's storm, winds are going to be gusty as well. 20 to 50 miles per hour on and off saturday through sunday. so this may bring down more trees as well. just something we're going to have to watch out for with each and every one of these storms. when it comes to the russian river here in guerneville, we get constant updates on this. it's always giving us that latest data, and we're at 26 feet tomorrow, below flood stage. but we still think it will go up to 35.8 feet late sunday and mon

the bay area. from the north bay down to monterey county, rivers are already overflowing and running dangerously fast. nbc bay area is tracking when some of the rivers are expected to go beyond the flood stage. really concerning, cynthia. >> it is. another weekend on storm, river and creek watch here in the newsroom as we kick off a series of atmospheric rivers arriving in the bay area, now through monday. i'm keeping track of the russian river in guerneville and the salinas river in monterey county this morning. monterey county is under a flood warning until further notice. we're looking at new video from overnight of the salinas river. there was no roadway flooding when this was filmed, but the water is still very active and crews are handling the situation as best they can on the roads. but take a look at what we captured from nbc bay area's sky ranger yesterday. broken levies, water everywhere along highway 68 and the farms there. now, data from the salinas river tells us the river saw minor fl

we've got a flood watch for the entire bay area. but now we're looking at the potential for more flooding. aerial flood watch has been issued now for the bay area tpand a flood warning now in much of the north and the east bay in the san francisco, even expecting more heavy rainfall. you're seeing some ponding out there on the roads and all of the areas and the rivers. the streams will continue to rise and there's going to be issues overnight tonight is that heavy rain comes through. time now for you tonight. you see the storm system sliding by. it's going to continue 6 o'clock or so heavy rainfall moving a little further east and south and then you get these bans that are moving on shore, likely going to see some thunderstorms embedded in some of these bands. heavy rainfall, gusty winds, more damage throughout the night. we're going to be tracking it right here all night long from for a lot going on. express is here. i will happening now. several evacuation warnings have been issued because of >> what happened saturday. and now thi

that band of rain is going to be out of the bay area by 4:00 or 5:00. more showers and a few thunderstorms with locally heavy downpours will fill back in behind that band of heavy rain. so it's still going to be a wet commute on tuesday with follow-up showers likely tuesday afternoon. lighter activity becoming more sparse, a little break in the action most of tuesday evening, then more rain moving in wednesday. this isn't going to be associated with thunderstorms. it's light to moderate rain for most of us, but it will add up and potentially cause additional flooding problems before we finally t startowednesday evening. wednesday night and thursday look dry at this point. adding up the rain, the first wave producing a half inch to an inch of rain, but the higher amounts are closer to 1 1/2 inches total raffle and we add more on top of that. generally 1 to 3 inches of rain in the next 48 hours. some of the higher elevation spots in the north bay and santa cruz mountains getting even more rain than that and the winds will be gusting up in the next couple

rain bringing down trees all over the bay area. tell us a little bit about what you see. >> reporter: well, overnight, i mean the wind kept me up. it was really, really howling. right now it's relatively calm. i mean it's really calm. the skies are clear. it looks like the clouds are being pushed away right now. but there is a run right now, as you can see from the empty pallets here, a run on sand bags. people are running over to the sandbag location to fill up and prevent any localized flooding. they do have some restrictions here. you are limited to 20 sandbags per car just because of that. you mentioned the wind and it was howling overnight and it caused trees to fall all across the bay area. let me take you over to forestville. forestville is just west of santa rosa off highway 116. the wind toppled one tree here blocking the road. now, there is no word on any reopening of that road. and in mountain view, a scary moment for one driver. this is northbound highway 85. the driver said he was on the off-ramp when a large eucalyptu

here is look in the bay area. big basin in the santa cruz mountains, angel island and sugarloaf ridge, and the armstrong redwoods in the north bay, all closed. >> what's happened along the coast is we've had king tides arrive at the same -- the highest tides of the year are arriving at the same time that these very powerful storms are arriving. and there are several things that are occurring. the rivers are flooding and bringing out debris from fires and downed material that's been building in the creeks and rivers. so that's pushing out into the ocean. and then those big waves and storm energy are tossing all of that material up against the coast, creating a tremendous amount of erosion. we haven't seen something like this before. >> it's just a vicious cycle right there. even though the parks are closed, park rangers are still extremely busy. many of them helping with swift water rescues that we've seen this week in felton and in the pajaro valley near watsonville. >>> amidst all the rain and gloom and damage, h

a powerful storm system arriving at this hour in the bay area. we're issuing a microclimate weather alert. ahead, live team coverage on the warnings from officials and states declaring emergency. >> kari hall, our meteorologist, breaking down the hour-by-hour outlook. this is "today in the bay" streaming live on roku, amazon fire, apple tv and online. good morning, everyone. it's wednesday. i'm scott mcgrew. marcus washington is going to take the week off. >> that's right. and i'm laura garcia. this morning many people across the bay area waking up to more wet weather. our storm ranger is tracking the rain right now. multiple bay area counties already activating emergency centers to help residents during this storm. >> we have live team coverage from road closures to flooding. our bob redell is live in danville with the current conditions there. vianey arana timing out the commute, and meteorologist kari hall is tracking the storm. we'll start with kari. >>> we're looking at storm ranger where we can see the rain is already moving through all of

agencies across the bay area are all hands on deck as the storm moves across the bay area pg and e crews are going to be out today to address any hazards that might pop up. force amanda hari has details on what they're doing and how you can help. >> this dangerous powerful storm system. that's how the bay area national weather service is describing wednesday's storm. there really is a concern with this with the system to strong with the strong winds, the rain and everything. unfortunately, we do tend to get loss of life for these types of situations, which we really, really hate to see. nws meteorologist sean miller says it's important to take every precaution because it could save your life. make sure that you have a go bag. in case you have. you have to leave quickly in the event of an evacuation. make sure you you know, good supply of things in your home food, that kind of stuff, medications, if make sure you have what you need for your pets as well. just in case there was an extended power outage or flooding washed out a road or something like that. meanwhile, pg and e is working aro

a moderate drought across the bay area. a couple of patches of severe drought in the central valley. this week's update erases one of those patches of severe drought and moderate drought for most of the bay area. it's the first category of actual drought conditions. in santa cruz county, the patch of yellow indicates non-drought conditions. still categorized as being abnormally dry compared to what is supposed to be normal. just nice to see part of the bay area that has broken out of those drought conditions. still the patch of severe drought from sacramento to the north. good news on the statewide level, as well. last week was the first time in a while we had 0% of the worst two categories. exceptional and extreme drought. 33% of the state. a full third of the state is in severe drought. the orange shading on the map. a 10% drop from last week. things were heading in the right direction. we need additional rain to continue to chip away at the drought conditions. we will see if any of that is in the seven-day forecast comin

a flood watch for the entire bay area. we talked about the dangerous creeks and rivers of the it could take out trees and power lines, and the heavy snow could close more storms. on wednesday and thursday, a break friday, a second one, saturday, sunday, and then a third possible storm next monday and tuesday. coming up at 5:00, we'll look at the sierra snow. also, creek and river levels across the bay area. we've got everything everyone needs to know coming up at 5:00. >> okay. my next question for you is, are you ready for this storm? because it could cause power outages, even force people to leave their homes. we want the make sure you are prepared and that's why we asked chris to join us. a lot of people are like, okay, this is a little scary. what can i do? what is something we can all do tonight to prepare? >> i think you can try to relieve the stress of making flash decisions. so for example, if somebody comes to your door and says you have to leave right now, it would be better to have a go back ahead of time. i mea

but look at the totals for the bay area. this is impressive, but almost yearly total in san francisco. now, 21 7500's there. how about that? over 200% of normal san jose at 148% of normal over 8 and a half inches of rain. oakland, 21 inches. that is 238% of normal santa rosa, which was in the deficit before all the rain begin now to 150% of normal. and hayward, you're starting to see some crazy numbers there. 286% of normal at over 20 inches of rain and livermore over 16 and a half inches of rain. 236% of normal. and they're still more to come tonight. more rain going to be moving in, but this front coming from the gulf of alaska. so a much colder system doesn't contain as much moisture with it. that means less rainfall but still and you can see some of the gusty winds causing some issues, i think is a storm system comes through tonight, especially right around midnight. some blustery winds likely to develop. but behind that looks like a little sunshine to make a return and some drier weather on the rise in temperatures goin

well, the first part of the bay area to get hit the north bay. we spoke with our evan sernoffsky at for it was really coming down. then he's live now in santa rosa for us tonight. we're all eyes are on creeks, streams and evers. evan, how's it looking this hour? julie for the last couple of days, we've been watching that bomb cyclone off the coast of california over the last couple hours here in santa rosa. that bomb has detonated. it has been coming down super hard. we're feeling strong winds and this creek behind me, the santa rosa creek is incrementally getting higher and higher, and that's what forecasters and officials are closely watching. because in the next coming hours and days, it could flood here. wednesday's powerful storm soaked the north bay, causing flooding and toppling trees expect more down trees as well as power outages and power lines down. throughout the evening, and until tonight earlier in the day, a tree fell on eastbound lanes of highway 12 in santa rosa, closing the major thoroughfare crews cleaned up. officials say heav

the bay area housing prices continue to drop. >>> good evening. this is nbc bay area news tonight. i'm raj mathai. we have made it to friday, but for so many of us, this weekend will be equally stressful. we're talking floods, downed trees, and power outages. we could see it all happening again. in fact, more rain is coming tomorrow. you can see the radar here. thunderstorms and hail also possible. we're keeping a close eye on the rivers and creeks as well. many already flooded last weekend. others are full thanks to all the storms we've gone through. the russian river specifically forecasted to potentially flood on monday. this is all happening as flood-ravaged communities are very much in the middle of cleaning up. the latest place hit, capitola. the popular tourist spot down in santa cruz county inundated with water yesterday. now, we will go deeper into all of these issues and more. >>> but first let's bring in our chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. jeff, good to see you. >> yes. >> it's been a busy week, and it's probably going to be a busy weekend. what are you seeing in terms

all right, around the bay area. let's time it out for you as we head through the night tonight, those clouds rolling in the rain beginning tomorrow morning right around 04:00am starting to pick that up. and then as we head through the morning, you can see that rain kind of taper off, maybe just a little bit, but not by much. and then the main front is going to come in and just start to slam us as we get the afternoon. there we are just after 2, almost 3 o'clock in the afternoon. heavy rain moving in the north bay spreading right across the entire bay area. if you have to drive tomorrow, you have to really slow down and take extra care. there's going to be problems out there on the roadways are broadly of debris out there as well from all the very strong winds that are kicking up and that rain just ferocious right through the heart of the bay area into the commute hours and then probably tapering off by about 8, 9 o'clock or so. but several bands rotating right behind that as well. it's going to keep going on and off

if you are taking the bay area bridges, it is quiet. we will get a live look at the bay bridge in just a second. >>> now to alameda county, the train services are back on track after a rockslide stranded hundreds of commuters for hours. the train was traveling toward fremont, along the alameda creek, when it ran into trouble. one passenger gave us this video of rocks pounding the side of the train, as the people inside waited for help. the wife of another passenger shared these photos with us. you can see a tree, and other debris press stop, right against the window. hinckley, with all of this, no one was hurt. they make that was scary. eventually the rescue train pulled up behind and pushed this back to the pleasanton station. >> one of the scariest things was walking by the car where the landslide fell. you could see all of the rocks and debris. they make the crew did well. they responded really well. they were very well trained. for the most part, nobody really panicked. >> is set up bus bridges between pleasanton and fremont , while

we've been getting some rain here in the bay area. not any kind of wind like that, but as we've looked at the past 24-hour rainfall totals we've gotten about an inch of rain in hayward, a little more in oakland and about an inch in san francisco. the north bay already measuring up another 2 inches of rainfall and over 3 inches in the santa cruz mountains. we know it's still coming down but the storms are still lining up as we see wave after wave of these areas of low pressure tapping into the deep tropical moisture and bringing it right into our area. so as we get a closer look, some pockets of heavier rain, but it's been pretty steady and widespread as we start out this morning making the commute very slippery, we are seeing heavier rain just off the coast, and that's going to be moving into san francisco as well as the coastline near half moon bay over the next couple of minutes. we're also going to see some of the heavier rain starting to shift from parts of the north bay into the south bay. look at 10:00, we're starting to get a b

what we have to do in the bay area? museums. a list of the best museums in san francisco and when you can go for free. first is the asian art museum come the first sunday of the month is when you can attend without paying. the first tuesday of the month at the young museum. bay area residents get in for free on saturdays with the same for the legion of honor. and you can attend the sonoma for free the first thursday of the month with other smaller museums in the bay that are pretty cheap for those who cannot attend during the weekdays. i know that you go to a lot of museums. >> yes i do, i am a member at the legion of honor and i spent too much time everywhere. do you have a membership? >> i did and it just expired. there are so many great opportunities to explore the different cultures and the art. >> think about being here, with the rain that is a good option because usually i will just stay home. >> a good opportunity to stay dry. >>> the pandemic has affected the social lives of many people and it's hard to make up that isol

dangerous flooding is all over the bay area. a flood warning covers all of the bay area counties. you can imagine how intense the storm is paired here is a little bit of forecast and omission. we don't see the reds and oranges leaving the area until after midnight when we get a little bit of weakening. that will not be the end of it. there is a live view from emeryville. heavy rain and powerful wind gusts will be with us through the night into early tomorrow morning. widespread flooding is likely as is wind damage. the storm eases tomorrow but several days of rain will follow. >> lisa is here tracking with more information. >> the winds have in an issue. the reporters all out in the field. we had 49 miles per hour at sfo. now we are at 40 miles from santa rosa to novato. later into the east bay but there are stronger gusts. we do up in height 8000 feet and look at woodacre. 50 form -- 54 miles per hour. hawkeye 63 miles per hour. 85 mile per hour when costner the cost so. extremely dangerous and gusty winds. those roots are very shallow. we are looking at some trees down. mudslide
