awnings have been part of san francisco's chinatown for generations, so why now? a spokesperson says they're legally bound to investigate anonymous complaints. in the past three months they got 187 anonymous ones about awnings. they said our inspectors aren't trolling the streets looking for violations, and add if a violation is found, it is issued regardless of how long the condition has existed. the complaints are four neighborhoods, chinatown, the richmond, haight and tenderloin, a spokesperson says they are issued in two days and can cost up to $3,000. that's money these small businesses, new and established, say they can't shell out. >> you can see how quiet the street is. i don't think we can afford this. >> we really need the city's help to mediate and not do nine times or whatever they're trying to do. >> reporter: "today in the bay." >> makes you want to support those businesses. >> yeah. >>> it's 4:37 this morning. next on "today in the bay," the hundreds of layoffs apple is reportedly making. >>> good friday morning. it is 4:40 and it's another cold sta

this type of housing is very common in chinatown and the mission district. kristen: looking at your video i see a husband and wife. i think they have two young boys and two teen girls. can you even describe, how do they study. where do they hang out? how do they cook? >> this is very heartbreaking. six of them growing up, and all have. so normally they will baths and share the bathroom together. there is average and some shelves. kristen: i saw a rice cooker. >> may be just one little space for people to stand. during the remote learning time, four of the kids might have to study at home and there is no way four kids can stay at the same time. they have to go out to the hallway and find a space to study. kristen: i cannot even imagine. how much do they pay to rent a space like that? >> sros are considered very affordable compared to san francisco's situation. normally the rent for an sro room is $500, $700. kristen: and it is legal for them to live like that? it almost feels like a fire hazard. >> that is a really good question. federal, state, and local law

these are black and white, late uncle benjamin chen, who grew up and lived in chinatown. two captured the images and the scenes that he saw just stepping right outside historic commercial or coming around the corner here to grant al hill like this key, a key to a home in china. among the items in the conceptual store created by artist galling it's an interactive display. people bring the card and book and orange cups in to exchange exchange, where visitors can take an item after they make an offering a physical object or something intangible. no money is involved. i didn't really have anything like physical to give. i thought i could dance would be really meaningful to do return. she takes a drawing with concrete and raising. and this is moss that i collect from the bay area artists assen and glad pitch tells me she transforms into art items she comes across in her life, including leftover fabric from her grandmother's sewing, she says moss and other plants that grow wild and endure represent her struggle as an immigrant from thailand. kind of make me feel like i am in th
