cnn's oren liebermann is at pentagon for us. oren, officials say the balloon doesn't currently seem to present a threat, but why is the pentagon also preceding with caution on it? >> reporter: so the pentagon has said for now that it will not be shooting this down, because of the risks from two different perspectives, first there's the risk to what's below, blow something up at 60,000 feet and that could be scattered over quite a large debris field, so there is a risk to people and property. but they are keeping a very close eye on it. and are continuously monitoring this. as it makes its way across frankly much of the united states. like a scenic tour from the north west over montana to where it is spotted over the last hour or so, asheville, north carolina, charlotte, north carolina, some sightings there. so it is making its way on the east/southeast track. the other reason it hasn't been taken down yet, because they don't believe it has surveillance or intelligence gathering capabilities above and beyond chinese spy satellite

cnn's nic robertson is covering the conference in munich and cnn's mark stewart is standing by in tokyo with more from asia. first to you, nic. the u.s. and china seem to agree only on one thing, right? that the meeting was, in fact, contentious. one example was, china saying that it was going to try to broker peace in ukraine and the u.s., as i just said, warning of exactly the opposite, that they were seeking to perhaps escalate and materially help russia through this. what more are we learning? >> reporter: it's a concern that china may do more to try to support russia in the war in terms of military support, which it isn't doing at the moment. there's no evidence that it is. but that was a concern that was shared here with allies and partners. i spoke with the european commission president, ursula von der leyen, on this issue yesterday. she said it is an open question, we are watching closely what china does, it is a concern going forward. there's a realization here that if china does support russia because it has such a scope and scale of armaments and ammunition that could be supp

cnn's scott mclean joins us in london with the latest. scott, the head. mercenary group has been talking about how essential it is for them to capture if they want to have basically an easier time capturing the rest of the east. what are we hearing about the progress they're making? >> it's pretty impressive, especially a town that very few have heard of outside the war. it's that way for a few reasons. a., it's a brick wall for the russians for months and mores who have been trying to capture it. part of the reason they have had difficulty because it was fortified both naturally and militarily, so the russians have exhausted a huge number of people, huge number of equipment, actually trying to take it with really no luck. so, as of late, their strategy instead has been to go around it, to try to surround it. and there are some indications that they're having -- making progress. the ukrainian military says there have been fierce battles in towns to the north of bakhmut, and also to the west of bakhmut as well which is concerning. the ukrainians also ackno
