jacqui, let's start with this meeting between kevin mccarthy and president biden. republicans are no longer talking about cutting medicare and social security. so what are they talking about? >> yes, stephanie, that is the question. you are making the billion dollar point here, and i think the contours of what republicans are going to be willing to come to agreement about democrats in terms of cutting is still up in the air. mccarthy the biden were more optimistic than people were expecting after the meeting, but this was a sort of perfunctory first meeting in they haven't gotten yet down to the details. i think there is this meeting, though, at least among democrats, that republicans aren't actually serious about cutting the deficit and that the case in point, they point to there, is that the first vote that republicans took when there was finally as speaker mccarthy was to eliminate billions of dollars a virus funding that would add to the deficit 100 billion dollars. so i think that biden held his line, that the debt ceiling needs to be raised, no conditions, no

mccarthy says yes to that. number two, what does mccarthy want to cut? he says he wants to revert to old spending numbers. meaning the government, in his estimation, is spending too much money right now. he wants to go back to 2022 spending. so a lower number than currently in the federal budget. those are big questions. how do you get from a to b is a massive, massive question. i will say this. i'm not sure sitting here today that a debt ceiling without some negotiations could pass the senate. we're a long way away but this is a crucial understanding of where the two sides are. as mccarthy put it to me yesterday, this is a paraphrase, we have to dance at some point. the question is whether the music starts playing now or later. that's his estimation as he goes into this meeting. >> this is jonathan. as you say, little expected from today but they are sitting down, which is noteworthy. tell us what you know about their relationship. we know biden and mccarthy don't go back as far as biden and mcconnell, to be clear, but they have had dealings in the past
