we just heard from bernie sanders. whatever the final number is, this is still considered a big win for him tonight. >> reporter: yeah, that's right. i mean, the sanders campaign feels like this gives them a lot of momentum going into these series of contests coming up here in a week, wolf. he's really looking toward ohio, even before seeing his showing tonight, his campaign felt that his message attacking hillary clinton for her past support of some -- even before seeing how it played here in michigan. that's certainly we should watch going into the next week here. i want to talk about some of the polling. the sanders campaign on friday did their final internal polling. they found that hillary clinton was up by what i was told by one aide was high single digits. that was on friday. they didn't bother polling over the weekend because they found it really difficult to get ahold of young people, which are so key to his sort of black -- his numbers did not reflect his support of minority voters. >> ohio, one of the big co

so today bernie sanders right now we've allocated 26 delegates to bernie sanders, zero to hillary clinton. now, she is above threshold. she has more than 15% in the vote totals in both washington and alaska so she will likely get delegates but right now we're able to allocate 26 delegates to bernie sanders today. that brings us to the total delegates to date and this is where you see hillary clinton's big lead 1,711 delegates to bernie sanders' 978 delegates. that includes the superdelegates. if you break it out and you look at just pledge delegates, you see that it is 1,229 pledge delegates for hillary clinton, 482 superdelegates to bernie sanders' 951 pledge delegates and he has 27 superdelegates. rack them all together 1,711 to 978 is the total delegates to date. >> we said at the beginning of the day he needed some landslide victories because of the proportional allocation in these democratic contests. he did. certainly in alaska and possibly in washington state as well. >> yeah. these margins hold whenever vote the counted, he'll make a significant chunk up in his delegate deficit. t

>>> breaking overnight, big wins for donald trump and bernie sanders. trump the presumptive republican nominee planning his general election strategy as sanders claims his wins show he can beat hillary clinton to the democratic nomination. good morning, everybody. welcome to "early start." i'm christine romans. >> i'm john berman. this morning, donald trump and bernie sanders are waking up with big west virginia wins. donald trump is the only republican still running for president. he easily won west virginia. he also took nebraska. he adds at least 39 delegates to his total. it will end up being way more than that once west virginia's convoluted process works its way out. on the democratic side, it was only west virginia. they voted big for bernie sanders. he crushed hillary clinton there. but even with that big win, even with a 15% win, he barely chipped away at clinton's delegate lead. if you include super delegates, she's only 148 short of securing a majority for the nomination. even so, sanders told supporters last night he can still win. >> with o

sanders, bernie sanders supporters, well, bernie sanders spoke to his supporters earlier today and he talked about the idea of party unity, talked the idea of supporting hillary clinton, and he got booed. that's something that's on a lot of people's minds right now, looking forward to tonight and his speech. kasie hunt is down there with a sanders supporter who was at that meeting today. kasie, what do you have? >> hi, steve. this is the california delegation which is one of the larger delegations here in this hall. obviously many supporters. yes, hillary clinton supporters but also sanders folks. we found one of them who was at that event yesterday. sanders spoke to all of his delegates, about 1900 of them. this is alexis edelstein and you booed, why? >> yes. we think bernie is still the candidate to win. we don't want trump any more than anyone else wants trump. it's up to the superdelegates to make that decision. in the polls hillary is losing. that's why superdelegates come into play in the first place this. we don't want trump to win. so if we support hillary, we believe trump wi

even if bernie sanders were to win them all. is it realistic to win california by 70%, new jersey by 70%? i don't think that is realistic but the goal in the sanders campaign is get as close as you can, narrow the pledged delegate gap and try to convince the super delegates to switch. >> among the democrats all states are proportional. they divided up proportionally. >> congressional district in heavy minority communities, bonus delegates. when you see the results coming in, in new jersey, eight not exact but roughly you see the percentage clinton/sanders that's ball park for the delegates. we start counting in new jersey new jersey. yesterday we thought new jersey would put her over the top and the super delegates putting her over the top. we'll know as the results come in is senator sanders in any way to pull off the miracle math meaning a sweep of all six states. we'll know that soon after the polls close. >> 2008 in california hillary clinton did back eight years ago. >> it's a great thing to look back at. california was not

bernie sanders taking oregon. the headline is all about bernie sanders defiant statement last night in the question of whether the democratic party will be able to unite for the general election. just moments ago on this show we heard from jeff weaver, the sanders campaign manager. he struck a more conciliatory tone stressing that the dispute between the democratic party and sanders campaign was more personal between democratic national chair debbie wasserman schultz and their campaign and state of nevada. and the sanders campaign stressing that bernie sanders would be behind hillary clinton and opposed to donald trump in the general election. donald trump this morning all over twitter trying to coax bernie sanders supporters to his side saying the democratic process rigged against sanders saying sanders voters basically should give him a look. let's talk about what we heard from bernie sanders and what we heard from the two campaigns with our panel. we have with us jeff greenfield, contributor with politico. jeff

we know -- bernie sanders campaign. does it change anything for bernie sanders. . >> we are waiting for the answer. there's a thought he'll take it over. the reality is that we are a candidate 41 points behind, a new months ago, running against almost an incumbent. someone with almost 100% name i.d. here we are on election night, we are ahead in the number of delegates we have won at this point. it's exciting to be here, we feel it's a huge victory, no matter what happens here on out. >> what do you think about the ivory tower, whether it's trump, cruz or bernie sanders supporters. it's a political establishment. is that a view you share, a repudiation of the political establishment. >> what we are trying to do here is change the establishment. we are trying to make sure that we take it over so we have it for the people, run by the people. that's what we want to do. we want to change out the establishment, making it so we have an establishment working for all working americans, instead of just working class. >> charles,

people feeling this election was stolen from bernie sanders. they gave a particularly nasty reception to debbie wasserman-schultz when she appeared in public for the first time. take a listen. >> we have so much to do, and we have to make sure we notch forward together in a unified way. we know that the voices in this room that are standing up and being disruptive. we know that that's not the florida that we know. reporter: that's the same kind of reception hillary clinton delegates are getting outside the wells far doug -- the wells. wells fargo center. they are not happy with it. listen to what they said to bernie. >> we have got to elect hillary clinton and tim kaine. [c[crowd booing] reporter: i talked to a number of people in this crowd that said yes we booed bernie, we booed him because we love him. we know that he had the election stolen from him, and we still support him and we are still with him and we don't want to be supporting hillary clinton and we are not going to vote for hillary clinton, we don't care what he says. i have never

bernie sanders will get five or six. she will add to her 200 delegate margin by about 20 by the time all of the votes are counted tonight. hillary clinton will gain in terms of her path to the nomination even though michigan is a huge setback because the sanders campaign is arguing for democrats to win in november they have to get those votes in the states of michigan. until she can do that there's not the same sense of inevitability about her nomination. this has been a big night on the republic side for donald trump. he has won 14 states in the nomination contest and number 13 tonight is michigan. donald trump won 36 to 24. this was a double digit margin. much wider than people had participated. it underscores the donald trump that agrees with bernie sanders in terms of being ingredients free trade and naft and transpacific partnership. that economic message is playing well in placements like michigan and you're seeing democratic cross-over voters who like what he is saying and they registered in the primary tonight. d

this is bernie sanders' backyard. in the last few decades, no border state candidate has lost this state, so you know, the expectations there for bernie are high. hillary has no problem out there competing for these votes. some people call me young, myself, there is a lot at stake for us in this election. i want to make sure that our next president is able to deliver and stand up for the values that are important to me. >> what would a win be? how would you define a win in new hampshire? >> well, as you said, this is an uphill climb, but we are looking to tighten that gap as much as we can. but i think more than anything, new hampshire is a great place for hillary to get out and talk about how she can provide those real results for families. >> can you get it into single digits in new hampshire? >> the polls are all over the place. it's hard to tell the numbers. we saw her really pull off a real feat in 2008 and we're looking to just work hard and let the voters decide again. >> in fact, that's one of bernie sanders's

hillary has 300 more delegates than bernie sanders. david: kelly, the fact superdelegates was at heart of issue really getting under the skin of the bernie sanders supporters. if they had seen these emails, they would have realized they had no, there was no way that they were going to get anything close to their way in terms of dealing with that situation. >> well these e-mails prove the bias of the dnc. listen, debbie wasserman schultz didn't resign today because this system is rigged. we all know that. she resigned because these emails were actually leaked. that is where the left has all the fury. debbie wasserman schultz had her position to rig the game against bernie sanders. see them trying to leak out an article that painted sanders supporters as violent. you saw it with the religion. how can we paint him in a corner on his religion. david: right. >> emails are self-evident. they definitely prove a bias. we all knew this going into that. hillary clinton, how many coines process? how many debates did we have? david: i'm impressed

. >> you mentioned bernie sanders and his speech. let's play a little sound from bernie sanders. he spoke to the crowd before he headed to the airport. >> nine months ago, we came to the beautiful state. we had no political organization. we had no money. we had no name recognition. and we were taking on the most powerful political organization, in the united states of america. and tonight, while the result are not known, it looks like we are in a virtual tie. >> so, sally, going back like 20 minutes ago. >> my arms are tired. >> all of me is tired, in fact. you go to the bernie sanders event. and there is passion there. it's palpable. and the voters adore bernie sanders. and hillary clinton needs to be careful. she goes into new hampshire now. and she has to make a choice. does she turn up the heat on bernie sanders? or does she run the disciplined campaign she has been running? you talk about him but you focus on yourself and your plans. does she need to mix this up? and is there a risk in doing so? >> if we analyze the two speeches they gave side-by-side, they are very similar.

resident obama, bernie sanders. reportedly their meeting has started. >> of course my first question is, is it really bernie sanders or is it where he gave it to mark we will never know. i'm sure bernie sanders will come out to the microphones but look, according to sources that have been quoted on just about all the networks, the president is not going to ask sanders to withdraw but no doubt will congratulate him on his efforts and try to see what he wants. i think that's the critical question for hillary clinton because the challenge isn't over. it is still possible that bernie sanders will decide to go to the convention to request a formal vote, and push hard for all of his planks in the platform to influence the selection of the vice president. we don't know these things yet. heather: he's already said in his speech tuesday night that he realizes that the path to victory is quote, steep but he's going to take it all the way to philadelphia. so you think that it's just a matter of continuing to get his word and h

a very big deal for bernie sanders. and they are really using that, making the case, of course, that easy electable because he can get all of the money from small donations. but i think right now the big thing for the bernie sanders camp is all about turnout. he has said and he said at the white house a few days ago that he believes that if he's able to get a big turnout in iowa, he'll win the caucuses and that's very big for him because he's doing very well in new hampshire. the question, of course, for bernie sanders is whether he's going to be able to get those small, young voters out to the caucuses. this is where hillary clinton conceivably could have an advantage because her voters have been to this rodeo before. a lot of the people who are supporting bernie sanders are new at this, if you will, john. so big questions as we go into the last day. i can also tell you that on social media and in other places, we're seeing a lot of strategy papers floating around among the supporters of bernie sanders to try to give p

bernie sanders is not vacuous. he is new to a lot of people, but he has a core message that is resonating to a lot of democrats because a lot of democrats don't think hillary clinton or barack obama were tough enough in the wake of the financial crisis. they still feel betrayed by that, and they want someone who is going to be tougher on the powers that be. >> is there a part of you deeply worried and stressed by these recent polls that have seen such a surge for sanders? >> no. frankly, the only ad we're running is one criticizing ted cruz. we won't attack bernie sanders. we won't. bernie is doing a lot of good for the party. i think ultimately hillary clinton will win. i'm not worried. she will. iowa and new hampshire are critically important, but they're white liberals. some of my best friends are white liberals, but the democratic party is lot more than the white liberals. once we get more people of color and lgbt people, she's likely to really roll. she's holding her own in new hampshire. i'm pretty impressed

that's another one that bernie sanders ran away with. and when you move into the general election, and sometimes it's not as much about the intricacies about the policy positions, and where are you going to set a threshold on raising taxes and things like that, but people are just trying to find somebody that they relate to, that they feel reflects their values, would govern and make decisions the way they would want them to govern and make decisions. those are two things that have bedevilled hillary clinton in past bids, and she is going to have to find a way to next for them. >> one interesting thing to look at, though, go back to 2008, she came in third on that question of who cares about me. she was able to rebound and win in new hampshire, and actually win on that quality. >> that's right. >> so that is a very -- i totally agree -- >> that's why she is not president today. >> you mentioned the quality and you mentioned that it's important that she figures out how to get there. and she figured it out in new hampshire. >> can she sust

so this is a big night for bernie sanders. as jeff weaver, his campaign manager, just noted, we don't know the final numbers yet. likely one will win one or two delegates more than that. 90 precincts are still out. wolf, where are they? they're all spread around the state. but the bulk of them, we still only have 88% of the vote in the largest county in iowa. polk county. that's a big thing. secretary clinton has been winning by this margin about all night long. there's no guarantee when the others come in they'll be consistent. but she has that roughly seven-point margin throughout the night. so they would assume that, although there could be some sanders precincts we don't know. where else are they? over anywhere lynn county you see 95% of the vote, that means there's still a few precincts out. bernie sanders winning in the cedar rapids suburbs. out in dubuque county 97%. that's gone up in the last couple minutes. they're getting close to finishing up here. secretary clinton with a lead up there. senator sanders, though, run
