i'm john siegenthaler in new york. secretary of state john kerry is on his way to geneva tonight. russia's prime minister arrived earlier. phil edner is here with the latest. >> it is no longer a question, it is no longer cautious optimism. there is a real sense of anticipation that a deal is imminent. the news that secretary of state john kerry is set to fly in expected early in the morning saturday morning really has got the atmosphere here bolstered on the idea that there is a deal that is been hashed out. we've known for quite some time that there's been a draft agreement, that has been circulated among the various delegations and it is the wording of that agreement not the substance that has been gone over and over. so the questions of whether or not iran will get sanction relief in exchange for some sort of agreement on two primary issues is afoot. those agreements include iran heavy water plant this produces plutonium and the surplus of enriched uranium that iran has. if those two issues have indeed been worked out we are on the verge of a first step, a trial period, a six

>> in terms of what, john? you know the minority leader nancy pelosi was asked at the very end of that bit that we got to watch together, whether or not there's any ground even a minor ground that they would give on obamacare and she actually before answering looked at one of her colleagues, i don't know if it was van holland or another one, she said no, there's not any ground we are going to give, it was a simple answer. the more they are there saying this is what the senate voted against, everything we send to them, we just want the budget, the budget shouldn't have obamacare attached to it. unless and until we have that, we are going to reject everything that's sent over. i don't know what else they can do. i think it was ali or mike viqueira who said, they just should do nothing. i don't think there's anything else they can do. >> mike do you think striking a balance is important for the democrats at this point? >> i think the democrats feel they have got the republicans on the run in a tough spot. i attend

patty, what did you make of what john kerry had to say. >> it seems after listening to john kerry that the u.s. is going to go ahead with some sort of targeted strike on the syrian military possibly in the hours or days ahead. they did not indicate that they were backing down. as the secretary was speaking, the white house was emailing out what they say is their evidence, they call it indisputable that the government of assad fired chemical weapons rockets at 12 different neighborhoods, killing 1,429 people, including 426 children. let's go through what they say their evidence is. they believe they have evidence and they're saying that this is from satellites and human intelligence, also intercepts that the chemical weapons teams in syria that worked with those weapons were in the area for three days before the attack. they have evidence that rockets were fired from areas controlled by the syrian government. they say they have absolutely no evidence that the opposition was seeking to fire chemical weapons. they say they have an intercept from a high ranking syrian official saying that

i think john kerry will get hard questions from the israelis on that. >> the u.s. and russia have been asking israel to ratify the chemical weapons treaty. it hasn't happened. how likely is it that kerry will use today to ask israel again? >> well, there are some in the israeli press saying that some israeli officials may be having sleepless nights on the issue. you are right, the israelis signed the chemical weapons convention in 1993 but they have failed to ratify it. every time someone says, "oi why haven't you ratified it?" they say, "look at the syrians, they are not good neighbours, and what do they have?", if you are interested in making the regime chemmial weapons free, if you can inties the syrians -- entice the syrians to give up the weapons, the syrians won't have that excuse. it's an idea that is clearly being discussed. >> you mentioned enticing the syrians. now that the chemical weapons deal has been agreed pon - what comes next? >> well, from the israeli perspective, they want everything on the table as the detailed plan that john kerry and his count

>> good question, john, and it does go forward. a federal district judge in southern oregon expected to take a look at it tomorrow. elements of the timber industry essentially suing for a temporary injunction. they want to stop the government from stopping them from doing their work on federal land. they say the shutdown and what has happened with the contracts they signed with the federal government hasn't happened before. it's illegal and it has disrupted their business. >> he went out early last week to companies holding federal logging contracts, stop cutting. the disruption in timber harvesting, it will take days or weeks for logging companies to get their people back in the woods and working at pre-shutdown levels. >> short-term, we have had people disconnected from their jobs, and they have had to get away from federal contracts and look for work elsewhere if they haven't. and they have had mobilization costs to get out of the woods and onto other jobs, and we have had a disruption in timber. >> three logging companies sued,

john terrett is standing by live at the un. the security council meeting is next, and john what can we expect? >> well, we have just confirmed that john kerry will be at the meeting of the permanent five security council members. earlier this morning he signed the new small arms treaty, which brings the rest of the world up to the u.s. level when it comes to sending arms to fighters overseas, and although it could be a long time before that becomes international law, it was seen as a hopeful step that the u.s. becomes the 91st country in the world to sign that treaty. handguns of course kill most people. so that's that. now he moves on to the security council meeting, and it is on syria, and here we can give added value to this. because al jazeera has learned behind the cover of the leader's day speech yesterday, there was quite a lot of work going on involving john kerry and sergey lavrov. they were trying to push the security council agreement needed to ratify the agreement between the two countries ever closer. and we unders

defaulting on over over $17 trillion in debt and now we look to digest and explain all of this, john, the president said that there is no businessperson in the world who does not think that this is a big deal but, too, it sounds like there are a number of folks out there not convinced. is it a big deal? and why? >> it is a big deal if the markets think that it is, the issue on october the 17th is that the government has to roll over many billions of dollars on that day and so the issue will find its way into the news in the sense of, will there be a market, buyers as there usually is when the debt rolls over. if there are no buyers on that day, it will be a crisis and an issue for a number of financial markets. looking back to 2008, a $300 billion rollover is a lot larger than what happened to lehman brothers. >> today there were signs that the market was jittery earlier this afternoon. is it in line given what you would imagine with previous experience? >> actually it has been fairly benign. we have not seen a big sell-off like we saw in 2010-'11 when the market went down 650 points

so in that context john, is it really that big of a deal? >> yeah, let's put it in a couple of different ways to look at that. first of all the reported incidents are only times when people are absolutely sure that a problem was caused by a dietary supplement but most people don't know. when they come down with an illness or reaction the last thing they might believe is that a dietary supplement caused this. because a dietary supplement is worthless or harmful. is if one person dies of listeria because of a problem that's front page news, and this is quite scary in my mind. but look what we know for a fact is that th alphabet vitamins are made in china, we know that they are not regulated, we know that good manufacturing practices are not being followed by the bulk of the industry, the clip early on where the senator said modeled vitamins, they actually cause, cancer, cause problems. we know that many of these vitamin supplements that they cause drug interactions, there's no requirement at all for a manufacturer that knows that their supplem
