and joining me now is gwen karr. and ms. karr, it's always a privilege to talk to you. and i just want to give you an opportunity because you have been so supportive of george floyd's family. to tell me how it felt when you heard the words guilty against derek chauvin? >> well, well, thank you, joy, for having me. but, when i first heard it, i was home. and watching the judge open the envelope. and when he start reading the charges, when he read the -- the most, you know, severe of the charges, first. and it was guilty. i was -- i was just so elated. i was relieved because we never know how these cases are going to turn out. we have had so many disappointments. so, i was just on edge. although, we all seen, blatantly, that george -- george floyd was murdered. he was suffering. the knee was on his neck for over-nine minutes. but look at my son's death. they seen them choking him to death and he was hollering, i can't breathe, 11 times, and the officer still decided to take his life. just like george floyd. he decided to take george's life, even though george begged for h

that's really the spirit of my family and karr's steakhouse. get them back on the feet and going out in the community to do the same thing. once we get past this, can find a kitchen, get into a kitchen, we'll start cooking again, feed whoever we can feed whether first responders, cleanup people. that's the plan right now. focusing on our community, those people really, really suffering. such huge need right now. >> i' images on the screen. it's like mayfield is gone. how long have you been there? >> we've had the steakhouse three years. the building was historic. about 150 years old, literally. before that my grandfarnts started karr's bar and barbecue and cafe, that's wiped away. those are just buildings. we're going to keep moving. >> right now you're a community helping one another. do you know if the government is going to do anything? >> i'm sure they are. i know that the governor of kentucky start add fund. he's been down here several times. we need all the help we can get from individuals from the government, from the company and help is

>> well, i think we may have to karr a dual path there. he's nothing wrong in thinking about a third party, but i'll be honest as a practitioner that takes a decade and people don't want to wait a decade so what you need to do is start building coalitions to get behind like-minded republicans running for office, whether they are running as a republican or perhaps an independent, and that the republicans that were on that call and no other people have to start trying to get back into the grassroots of the republican party. they have to go on to the state committees and the local committees because that's how donald trump took over the party. once he was elected and inauguration came, his people went in and festered within these -- within the state parties, and that's why you see the censures that you have recently of the likes of senator cassidy and sasse, but that can change fairly quickly and that's i think you have to run a duel course of republicans who want to make a change. they have to do it within within and potentially without. >>

when i talk to their president and ceo over the weekend, glenda karr, she told me that they have a plan not just for 2022, but through 2030. they're looking ahead at a ten-year strategic plan to build a pipeline of black u.s. candidates, not just for senate and congress, but black women in particular need a little more convincing to run for office than other traditional candidates that we've seen in cycles past. so that's something that a lot of these organizes are doing on the ground. in addition to providing resources like how do you raise money? what are inventive ways to hold fund-raisers? can you run for office while being a working class mom? that's a question that a lot of candidates ask that they brought up to me, that other organizations brought up to me that they heard from folks that's a big issue. it's really kind of walking people through the personal side of what all of this means and the professional side and giving them resources that they might not be getting from the national democratic party. >> hey, alexi, it's jonathan lemire. good to see you, welcome back. this obv
