al qaeda in iraq in syria have talked about settings up a state that includes both syria and iraq. we see the violence that's going on there and this is the other part, the flip side of the coin from the chemical weapons discussion that's going on. chemical weapons is only one small part of the terrible violence going on in syria. there is the assad regime itself which is a terrorist regime. there are also terrorists on the other side fighting assad. there is a lot going on what this really tells us, jenna, there is no comprehensive policy by this administration in dealing with syria. jenna: one of the reasons why it is such a debate over the policy because it is difficult to understand what is the threat here at home. that may all be happening here as you say, peter, but what is the threat to our homeland that is going on in syria? >> as it stands today, it is mostly a national fight between those sort of things but as friedman mentions, the fact is at some point in the future if syria becomes a terrorist state or under the control of al qaeda, they could start putting, they could

look at syria and iran. even though there remains a difference over what is the red line with iran, the fact that obama seems to have recognized israel might have to strike earlier. not only because it has a different perception of what red line is, but israel has weaker capacity. it doesn't have the strength in the air force that the united states has. it might have to strike earlier because it can do less. >> bret: do you think they strike soon? >> look, i have been -- for years i thought the israelis have to strike at some point. only reason i think they might not and if they don't, it would be because they may have calculated they don't have enough to severely destroy or set back the program iran has. i think it will strike and i don't see developments in the negotiations. >> bret: do we know if we provide them bunker buster bombs? >> i don't see how they do it without our assistance. since we take the blow-back, we might as well be involved. we might as well have say and control over how it happens. the

so we engage in syria and hit them for two or three days. and then the question is what is the big strategic outcome. i think that's what the administration has to answer. but in terms of, you know, whether the president should have gone to congress or not, i would have to say that the president did the right thing because, you know, you had republicans and democrats saying he should do this. he did it at a minimum. i think congress may end up supporting this, regardless of what happens, it bolsters his credibility that he is pursuing this road. >> and daniel, i will mention something that senator john mccain had said earlier. he said that this was political move more than a military move by the president. do you agree? >> it may very well have been so, but i have to agree. i do give credit to the president that he chose to honor the constitution in this case. and i think his -- he is strengthened by it. and i think that if he can achieve i think the approval of congress to approve war or military action against syria, he is going to be stre
