In preparing our own book, The Chatfield Story, we drew upon Kellogg’s book for background information. Kellogg was the 1st Sergeant for Company B of the 113th Illinois. We referred to him as "Orderly Kellogg." Chatfield mentioned Kellogg numerous times in his letters, including the day Kellogg entertained the boys with his violin. We included the following tribute to Kellogg in our Epilogue:
"Kellogg eventually published his diary information in book form: The Vicksburg Campaign and Reminiscences from Milliken's Bend to July 4, 1863 — an enjoyable read. Civil War historians frequently reference its lively content. Kellogg served as the Company's Orderly through April 4, 1864, when he departed Memphis for Springfield to assist in recruiting. Sometime after that, Kellogg was promoted to Captain to command a company in the 88th Colored Infantry. Following his discharge Kellogg settled in Washington, Iowa, where he spoke to a variety of groups over the years, recounting the events of the war. In 1913 he drew upon his diary to write and publish his book."
