Windows95.com theme: Finally, a theme for Sherlock Holmes fans. New animated cursors, 256-color icons, and lots of .WAVs captured from the BBC's production of "Hound of the Baskervilles" starring Jeremy Brett. A MUST HAVE for all Holmes geeks. NOTE: This theme requires a high-color (16-bit) or true-color (24-bit) display.

This theme is inspired by the fiction of A. Conan Doyle and the BBC's faithful reproductions featuring the quintessential Holmes, Jeremy Brett. The background map of London is drawn from the original "Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective" boardgame which was published in the early '80s and was the source of the "Consulting Detective" CD-ROMs. The theme includes two new cursors (smoking pipe=wait, playing violin=busy) which I drew and animated, and new icons (Holmes=My Computer, Big Ben & Houses of Parliament=Network Neighborhood, Holmes' Scrapbook=Recycly Bin Empty/Ful) for the standard components. Nearly all the wave files for system events were captured from the BBC's production of "Hound of the Baskervilles" starring Jeremy Brett as Holmes and Edward Hardwicke (also in "Shadowlands" with Anthony Hopkins) as Dr. Watson. I must confess that I much prefer Hardwicke's interpretation of Watson to that of Edmond Burke, who also portrayed Watson for some of the episodes in the BBC's series. The only sound that didn't come from "Hound" is the intro theme (Windows Start), which was taken from "A Scandal in Bohemia," since the movie production of "Hound" did not use the theme from the series. I would like to acknowledge Lee Lorenz for writing such an artful screen saver for Windows 95. I'd also like to thank A. Conan Doyle for his part in creating the genre of detective fiction, and for providing such satisfying fodder for a child's active imagination. Finally, I want to recognize the finest, most faithful, and most engrossing characterization of Holmes, portrayed by Jeremy Brett (R.I.P. 1995). He will be sorely missed. INSTALLATION To install the theme, follow these steps: 1) When you have unzipped the archive, copy all the files except wtrspt16.zip into your Themes folder. 2) Unzip wtrspt16.zip (the screen saver) into a temporary folder. 3) Copy all the files from the wtrspt16.zip archive into the WINDOWS\SYSTEM folder, except for WAVEMIX.INI, which you should copy into your WINDOWS folder. 4) Open the Control Panel (Start Menu->Settings->Control Panel) and start the Desktop Themes control. 5) In the themes list, select "Sherlock (high color)" and select OK to apply the theme. CLOSING NOTES I would like to hear from you if you use this theme. For one thing, I am curious whether there are people actually using this theme. I would also like to hear any feedback, since I plan to maintain and enhance this theme, as well as develop new ones. Carter Hansen mediaman@novia.net carterch@aol.com
