minnesota hockey connection show is on the air we're at peck tv studios down in duluth minnesota city hall and it's monday june 6th and boy hockey's pretty close to the end right now we got four teams in the national hockey league going at it and boy they're the stanley cup it's amazing how different stanley cup is to the regular season but um right now the two series in the east it's uh new york rangers versus tampa bay in the one semi-final series and new york rangers are ahead two to one and then in the western conference it's the colorado avalanche against the edmonton oilers and colorado is ahead 3-0 and it looks the way they're playing though i think it's over for edmonton but you never know but um it's just fun that we can see hockey still on tv every night almost and the series will go to its final probably i say in a week so in tampa bay if they can get by the rangers they'll they'll be going for their third straight stanley cup what a feat that would be but um talking a little bit about stanley cup right now of the 32 team 16 got into the stanley cup cup playoffs and i was just looking at some stats on the teams and it it amazes me that in the like power plays for all these stanley cup teams um almost the top 10 teams were all in the stanley cup on power play percentage toronto led led with 27 percent st louis had 26 percent edmonton 26 new york rangers 25 nashville 24 colorado 24 florida 24. bank well there is one team here that got in there that wasn't in the stanley cup vancouver canucks 23 tampa bay 23 calgary 23. and our minnesota wild we're 17 so that's they got to do better on power plays special teams means a lot in hockey nowadays five on five it's really hard to score so minnesota was 17th in the power play now we go to the penalty kill and this is one of the places where the wild got killed uh carolina was the top at 88 percent then we had some stanley cup teams 85 at pittsburgh we had 84 st louis blues calgary was 83. toronto was 82 new york rangers 82 but our minnesota wild were 75 penalty kill terrible and so during the off season i think they got to look at how they can improve the special teams because special teams like i said are very important in hockey at every level now so let's go into some scoring i mean the wild had uh carell caprese off with uh 46 goals and uh in 60 assist so he was one of the top 10 scorers in the league but it was just kind of funny the four teams that are left we got of the top 30 there's one two three four five six seven eight nine players that are in the top four teams that were in top scoring in the league during the regular season and that's that's with the leader conor mcgregor mcdavid i mean um he led the league with uh 123 points with 44 goals and 79 assists but then we got his line mate leon uh dracell and he was at uh 110 points 55 goals and 55 assists and then steven stamkos tampa bay he what a comeback for a player that had a lot of injuries over the last three four years and and coming back and great season for him and then i told me reina had uh 22 goals and 74 assists and then the colorado three they got uh nathan mckinnon they got miko retinan and kep the defenseman and then tampa bay has another defenseman victor hedman so it just goes to show special teams top scores on your team and then i got another another thing that really caught my eye on the top 30 men scoring so that's defenseman scoring so getting a little offense off the d the top 30 the minnesota wild did not have one player in the top 30 in the league and right now uh colorado has two right in the top ten they got uh kell mccarr they got caves dave so those two d then we got bouchard up in edmonton we got victor hedman and uh ryan mcdonough the local boy from same saint paul he played at creighton one state tournament there then he went to wisconsin still having a great career man he's been in the league for over 10 years now and so and then uh new york rangers um they got fox at the defense too that's in the top ten so all these uh teams are in the finals they got top scorers top special teams and they got some offensive defensemen so i think the wild have to look at that and i hope general manager bill bill guerin picks up something that can help the team and power play or penalty kill or get the offense rolling a little more especially on the power play so there you go but i'll tell you one thing the wild had a great season they had one of their best seasons best record and um a lot of scorers a lot of a lot of players had over 20 goals so that's uh the upside for the team and plus the fans love their style of play i mean there's a lot of offense and a lot of goals this season and they played very well at home so that's one thing i hope can continue and they'll have most of their players back the downside is that general manager karen has to see what he's going to do with dumba viella and who's the other player oh fleury the flower is he going to try to resign them i myself would not resign them i think it's going to cost too much money and and plus they got 13 milli 13 million this year is dead money because of the parisi suitor and so that's that makes it hard for a team so but we'll see what they do with fiola and what they do with dumbo they might trade them and to keep fiala or they just might trade viola if they can and pick up another player but we'll see the summer right after the draft you know the draft comes up uh next month and about what was it the 10th 11th of july up in montreal so right after that there's going to be some trades so we'll see so let's go over the seasons for different levels of hockey in minnesota minnesota d1 colleges had a great year minnesota gophers and minnesota state mavericks both made it to the frozen four and minnesota state beat the gophers in the semis and then they lost to denver in the finals in the frozen four so denver's the national championship and some news note this week the athletic director at umd minnesota duluth josh berlo he is moving to denver he's going to be the athletic director there so good luck to josh had a lot of great talks with him and he loved the hockey program so he was always at a lot of the games and that and so i'll probably see him at the rink again down in denver and then uh another thing scott sandlin got a two-year extension i think he goes to 2027 right now and i think what they're doing is they're dropping his yearly salary but they're giving them more retirement retirement money each year so and plus uh he'll get a little like increments of twenty thousand twenty five thousand each year on that so so he's uh pretty set if he wants to stay at umd and i hope he does he's done a great job at umd and man he's won three national championships he's been to the frozen four how many times now so good for scott and one thing that's really bothering me is a transfer portal portal i mean it's getting crazy how many hockey players move on to the transfer portal and try to find another team to play for sometimes i wish they didn't have this because it just i think it messes up a lot of teams on this because then they if they pick up some transfer portals that means some of these kids that are playing junior hockey ready to come in to their college as a freshman there's no room for them so i hope the ncaa takes a better look at this and put some more rules on it so there's not that many transfer portals and going back to college hockey minnesota state goalie he won the hobie baker this year out in boston when they had the frozen four in boston and plus he just won the usa jim johansen college player of the year so congratulations to dryden mckay the goalie for minnesota state and then there's going to be some new d1 colleges i think it's pretty nice a couple years ago um st thomas decided to go d1 and then the new york what's it called long island has a team in uh d1 now and then the two new teams is augusta tana in lindewood linwood in missouri down by st louis so two more d1 colleges and this is going to give a lot of more opportunity for minnesota high school kids to play d1 college and i'll tell you what there's going to be a lot of um other colleges thinking we're going d one in the next five years and arizona state which has been around for about five years now they're um finally got got their stadium it's going to be ready for the fall and it'll hold about five thousand then you can probably put some standing room in there but the funny thing about it the arizona coyotes the national hockey league team will have to play their games there so it wouldn't surprise me if the arizona coyotes move to a different town or they built they signed a contract where they got to do it fast because it takes two years to build a brand new stadium so things will happen fast this summer which way they're gonna go so in women's hockey um ohio state won uh the ladies frozen four they beat minnesota duluth three to two minnesota duels had another great year and then d3 we had uh middlebury three and gustavus adolphus two in the finals in national championships for d3 hockey and ladies and then in men we had uh adrian five and oxborne oh i'm sorry genesco um one so adrian was the national champs in uh men so let's get uh some high school a lot of stuff on high school state tournament this past season the winner in the class double a was andover they beat one of the best games in state high school tournament history in for the championship game was andover six maple grove five and went to two overtimes but a lot of scorn a lot of up it was a great i mean i was at the game and it was great watching that game and and congratulations to uh mark manny the coach of andover and todd berlin for the coach of maple grove on the great season for both of those teams it's kind of funny i know mark for many years now because they they're always in section 7 and duluth east i see a lot of duluth so i always see the andover game and i've talked to mark for years he's a computer staff guy and he likes to get anything his hands on if he can get film of any other team in that so he always has his notebook ready to go and check film on any team any power play and that so he really knows his stuff and funny thing about it a lot of people still don't know that he was the air force one pilot for [Music] at least three presidents and that's amazing and then in class a the hermantown hawks up here in northern minnesota beat warworld which had a great season three to two in girls hockey we got uh andover one one again i think that's two years in a row over tonka three to two and then war world beat the hermanntown proctor hawk nut hawks mirage and they beat them six to one and some of the stories the biggest stories in high school hockey this year it's probably two i mean both come local here on the northland uh one is uh coach mike randolph or who coached duluth east for 30 almost 30 years he um got the head coaching job at st thomas academy over some top coaches in the state that applied for that job so and he i talked to mike uh a lot lately and he's very excited um tuesday june 7th he starts all his camps he's got a bantam camp he's got a junior gold camp he's got uh his high school jv and varsity camps so he's going to be busy tuesday through friday for most of the season i mean this summer next two months so but he's um he's like a little kid in the candy store but i always say it's better than that he's in the toy store and he can buy any toy he wants for nothing now he's just i mean he laid it you can't ready he's can't wait to get going and then the other big story is that duluth's gonna start another catholic high school and still stella mares and that's going to be up in woodland and our local scott piant who's coached for many years and juniors and ushl the north american hockey league he's coached in high school he's done everything camps and i mean very good coach he's going to start the program up there so i'm going to keep in touch with him and any news on that in the fall we'll we're going to have all these people on again for guests for when the fall we start our program again so congratulations then back to andover and hermantown i mean railroad oh it's hermantown and the boys and then andover and um in more world in uh girls state championships and then congratulations to max strand the roselle forward for getting mr hockey and we got uh who's the other person that got [Music] oh vivienne jungle mrs hawk miss hockey for edina yeah her brother was a very good hockey player for edina too about five six years but back so congratulations to those two for mr hockey and ms hockey so let's get to the some youth and bantam double a we got morehead five ep three for the championship so moorhead wins the bantam double a then we got stillwater eight bemidji two for the third place game and then uh osseo maple grove won the consolation in banimay we got east grand forks seven north northern lakes zero for the championship northfield eight chess got two for third place and armstrong got the consolation then bannon b prior lake won the championship bemidji one third place and let's see dino white won the consolation then we go to peewee there moorhead won again the championship so they won in the double a and bannon and peewee that so moorhead won five to one over edina third place was tonka over osceo maple grove two to one then matamina won the third i mean consolation then pwa east grand forks five war world zero roseville four jefferson one an inhibiting one in the constellation and then p b edina green won the championship red lake falls third place and woodbury the consolation and going back i don't think i said i mean east grand forks won both the banimay and pewee a and moorhead won the bantam double a in pee wee double a so i think uh that northwest side is gonna have a good a team and a good double a team and we know roar world will always have good teams competitive teams up there because the way they do their system and the kids that's all they do is gate let's go to junior gold junior gold a dino won it junior gold b moorhead won it junior gold 16 u16 prior lake savage won it one thing about junior gold now there's a lot of younger players that are if they know they can't play varsity or jv on their sophomore year if they still want to have fun and play hockey they turn to the junior gold program which is oh it's a great program i mean and a lot of fun and one thing about it every once in a while there's a lot of kids that mature late and some high school coaches should take better look at their teams because there might be a player on that team that can make the varsity it might be just a third or fourth line but still it's uh if you got the numbers for hockey in your school i would take a look at that you never know there can be a dark horse player let's see what we got going well this next year um in high school hockey it's kind of funny this last year i vote for mr hockey every year and beginning of the high school season for the 2021 or 2122 i mean season i couldn't put 10 skaters on the mr hockey list in start of the season so i have to watch a lot of these different kids and who picks it up and that and at the end of the year i did have well i vote for seven only but i found 10 players but this year coming up i tell you there's going to be about 20 at least 20 players that can win mr hockey i'm just hoping that they stay in high school i know a lot of them are going to juniors before and after but some of these junior clubs they they kind of sell them all season to stay don't go back to high school so it's going to be we'll find out the first day of practice which is usually in the middle of november and at that point we'll know we know hermantown is going to be lost uh two players already the plant boys one's going to the development team u17 team and zam who would be a senior this year will be at the chicago still in the ushl so good luck to them but another thing though hermantown can lose two more players to juniors and if they do i still put them at the top class a for the preseason rankings because they have a lot of good players still on that team and they got one probably one of the best goalies in the state in callaway and then duluth east i mean they didn't have a great season last year but they got a lot of returning players and i tell you i think they can do some damage this year and but we'll wait and see but uh i saw a whole bunch of them down in uh blaine about about a month not even a month ago about two weeks ago and uh i liked um how they played i saw about five east kids so we'll see season starts seems right around the corner the high schools are starting scrimmages right now and i'll tell you what they can scrimmage june and july and a lot of these teams come down to um to the twin cities at the end of july there and uh john barger who used to coach burnsville and helped out at far farming farmington he uh runs these scrimmages in the summer and runs some tournaments at the holidays and he um gets about 24 teams in there so it'll be fun to see these scrimmages and where some of these kids are and we'll probably know more if some of these kids are leaving or not so but just give you a few names that i like for mr hockey is finn brink maple grove gavin thornson kaden casey we got over in andover harper bentz we got at moorhead tanner and lucky down in uh lakeville south uh sam ranello rogers rogers up and coming team watch out they'll be in the top five in the pre-season rankings in class double-a jake fisher creighton jimmy clark edina and ryan corey for at eat at eden prairie so just a few i'll give you more down the line in the fall when the elite league starts so the elite league starts in the fall a lot of hot just a lot of hockey still so hey have a good week take a rest because hockey's going to start right back and watch some good stanley cup hockey because we got another three weeks for sure to go see you at the rink [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] you 00:00:06.230 --> 00:00:08.310 align:start position:0% [Music] hockey town we're going downtown [Music] [Applause] [Music] year is dead money because of the parisi suitor and so that's that makes it hard for a team so but we'll see what they do with fiola and what they do with dumbo they might trade them and to keep fiala or they just might trade viola if they can and pick up another player but we'll see the summer right after the draft you know the draft comes up uh next month and about what was it the 10th 11th of another thing scott sandlin got a two-year extension i think he goes to 2027 right now and i think what they're doing is they're dropping his yearly salary but they're giving them more retirement retirement money each year so and plus uh he'll get a little like increments of twenty thousand twenty five thousand each year on that so so he's uh pretty set if he wants to stay at umd and i hope he does he's done a great job at umd and man he's won three national championships he's been to the frozen four how many times now so good for scott and one thing that's really bothering me is a transfer a lot of people still don't know that he was the air force one pilot for [Music] at least three presidents and that's amazing and then in class a the hermantown hawks up here in northern minnesota beat warworld which had a great season three to two in girls hockey we got uh andover one one again i think that's two years in a row over tonka three to two and then war world beat the hermanntown than that he's in the toy store and he can buy any toy he wants for nothing now he's just i mean he laid it you can't ready he's can't wait to get going and then the other big story is that duluth's gonna start another catholic high school and still stella mares and that's going to be up in woodland and our local scott piant who's coached for many years and juniors and ushl the north american other person that got [Music] oh vivienne jungle mrs hawk miss hockey for edina yeah her brother was a very good hockey player for edina too about five six years but back so congratulations to those two for mr hockey and ms hockey so let's get to the some youth and bantam double a we got morehead five ep three for the championship so moorhead wins the bantam double a then we got stillwater eight bemidji two for the third place game and then uh osseo maple grove won the consolation in banimay we got east grand forks seven north northern lakes zero for the championship northfield eight chess got two for third place and armstrong got the consolation then bannon b prior lake won the championship bemidji one third place and let's see dino white won the consolation then we go to peewee there moorhead won again the championship so they won in the double a and bannon and peewee that so moorhead won five to one over edina third place was tonka over osceo maple grove two to one then matamina won the third i mean consolation then pwa east grand forks five war world zero roseville four jefferson one an inhibiting one in the constellation and then p b edina green won the championship red lake falls third place and woodbury the consolation and going back i don't think i said i mean east grand forks won both the banimay and pewee a and moorhead won the bantam double a in pee wee double a so i think uh that northwest side is gonna have a good a team and a good double a team and we know roar world will always have good teams competitive teams up there because the way they do their system and the kids that's all they do is gate let's go to junior gold junior gold a dino won it junior gold b moorhead won it junior gold 16 u16 prior lake savage won it one thing about junior gold take a look at that you never know there can be a dark horse player let's see what we got going well this next year um in high school hockey it's kind of funny this last year i vote for mr hockey every year and beginning of the high school season for the 2021 or 2122 i mean season i couldn't put 10 skaters on the mr hockey list in start of the season so i have to watch a lot of these different kids and who picks it up and that and at the end of the year i did have well i vote for seven only but i found 10 players but this year coming up i tell you there's going to be about 20 at least 20 players that can win mr hockey i'm just hoping that they stay in high school i know a lot of them are going to juniors before and after but some of these junior clubs they they kind of sell them all season to stay don't go back to high school so it's going to be we'll find out the first day of practice which is usually in the middle of november and at that point we'll know we know hermantown is going to be lost uh two players already the plant boys one's going to the development team u17 team and zam who would be a senior this year will be at the chicago still in the ushl so good luck to them but another thing though hermantown can lose two more players to juniors and if they do i still put them at the top class a for the preseason rankings because they have a lot of good players still on that team and they got one probably one of the best goalies in the state in callaway and then duluth east i mean they didn't have a great season last year but they got a lot of returning players and i tell you i think they can do some damage this year and but we'll wait and see but uh i saw a whole bunch of them down in uh blaine about about a month not even a month ago about two weeks ago and uh i liked um how they played i saw about five east kids so we'll see season starts seems right around the corner the high schools are starting scrimmages right now and i'll tell you what they can scrimmage june and july and a lot of these teams come down to um to the twin cities at the end of july there and uh john barger who used to coach burnsville and helped out at far farming farmington he uh runs these scrimmages in the summer and runs some tournaments at the holidays and he um gets about 24 teams in there so it'll be fun to see these scrimmages and where some of these kids are and we'll probably know more if some of these kids are leaving or not so but just give you a few names that i like for mr hockey is finn brink maple grove gavin thornson kaden casey we got over in andover harper bentz we got at moorhead tanner and lucky down in uh lakeville south uh sam ranello rogers rogers up and coming team watch out they'll be in the top five in the pre-season rankings in class double-a jake fisher creighton jimmy clark edina and ryan corey for at eat at eden prairie so just a few i'll give you more down the line in the fall when the elite league starts so the elite league starts in the fall a lot of hot just a lot of hockey still so hey have a good week take a rest because hockey's going to start right back and watch some good stanley cup hockey because we got another three weeks for sure to go see you at the rink [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] you 00:00:08.310 --> 00:00:11.540 align:start position:0%
