a regional leader uh Team working with almost every Department across the city to map all our important utilities and data thank you Daryl Mastin and his team who helped support these critical operations and now let's watch behind the scenes video [Music] GIS is a geographical Information Systems basically what we're doing is taking data and giving it a spatial component mapping it out and giving it to the location of where that is at we receive a lot of our data from the other departments engineering is one of the largest departments that we work with as far as getting utility and asset data from them we also get data from the fire department Police Department Public Works we really work with most departments in the city we do so much behind the scenes work that a lot of people don't either see or know that it's happening the map that I work with on a daily basis is basically this master map that shows in our utility system for example we keep track of utilities that are in the ground or even ones that have previously been in the ground and we want to keep track of all that and in my map I see everything but we can query out all the stuff that's active and just show that to the people that need to see it that's the beauty of GIS is the whole query process of being able to display what you need to show the city of Fargo has the largest GIS team in the region so we end up doing a lot of regional projects and helping not only communities on the North Dakota side but communities on the Minnesota side as well we fly an aerial photo project every three years that includes the whole FM area and we also are responsible for updating all the gis data in the new world system for triple RDC and we do that for both Cass and Clay County the fire department uses our routable street Network to do proximity dispatch so when they dispatch fire units they use that routable Network to decide which unit is closest to the incident and there's a lot of pressure to make sure we have those streets in there correctly so that the correct unit gets dispatched in GIS in general is one of those things that most people don't know about or haven't heard of but it affects their daily life and you just don't know it because it's in your phone it's in your day-to-day living of how you get to work for me I'm a very visual guy for me GIS is exciting because I'd like to be
