Little rain has fallen in Southeast Asia after an earthobservatory.nasa.gov/NaturalHazards/natural_hazards_v2.php3?img_id=12569 early end to the rainy season in October 2004, leaving the region in severe drought. From southern China, through the Indochina and Malay Peninsulas, and into some of the islands of Indonesia, crops are shriveling, and in some places, drinking water is scarce. According to news reports, the drought will cost farmers in Thailand up to US .2 million after 809,000...

On February 17, 2005, seasonal burning in Southeast Asia was widespread. When the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer modis.gsfc.nasa.gov (MODIS) on NASA's aqua.nasa.gov Aqua satellite passed over head, the sensor detected scores of active fires (locations marked in red) across (clockwise from top left) Myanmar, China, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, and Thailand. Although seasonal agricultural burning is common this time of year, it is not possible to know if all of these fires are...

On September 4, 2002, Typhoon Sinlaku passed directly above the Japan's Okinawan island chain, generating winds of 145 kph (90 mph) and torrential rains. The typhoon knocked out electricity to tens of thousands of homes, injured 25 residents, and possibly killed five Filipino sailors. Currently, the typhoon is making its way toward Taiwan, packing sustained winds of 104 miles (167 kilometers) per hour. Taiwanese residents are shoring up their houses with sand bags and pulling their boats out of...

Hot, dry weather from January through March 2007 wilted crops in southern Africa. The severe drought produced near-record temperatures that, combined with a lack of rainfall, caused extensive crop damage, particularly in western crop areas, reported the United States Department of Agriculture's www.pecad.fas.usda.gov/wap_arch.cfm Foreign Agricultural Service. In South Africa, the anticipated yield from the corn crop dropped from ten million tons in December to six million tons in April because...

During the same period, unseasonably cold weather dominated much of Northern Europe. In Germany's Bavarian Alps, the thermometer plummeted to -6 Celsius as snow fell in the mountains and high valleys. The contrast between the...

A storm with near-perfect symmetry and a well-defined eye hovering over the warm waters of the Caribbean or in the South Pacific is not unusual, but Tropical Cyclone Gonu showed up in a rather different place: the Arabian Sea. Though rare, cyclones like Gonu are not unheard of in the northern Indian Ocean basin. Most cyclones that form in the region form over the Bay of Bengal, east of India. Those that take shape over the Arabian Sea, west of the Indian peninsula, tend to be small and fizzle...

You might expect to see a storm with near-perfect symmetry and a well-defined eye hovering over the warm waters of the Caribbean or in the South Pacific, but Tropical Cyclone Gonu showed up in an unusual place. On June 4, 2007, when the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer ( modis.gsfc.nasa.gov MODIS ) on NASA's aqua.nasa.gov/ Aqua satellite captured this image, Tropical Cyclone Gonu was approaching the northeastern shore of Oman, a region better known for hot desert conditions. Though...

This Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer image from August 27, 2002, shows just how strongly the southern African burning season can impact regional air quality. In this image, numerous fires (red dots) were detected by MODIS beneath a shroud of smoke that all but obscures Democratic Republic of Congo (top) and Angola (bottom). On September 4, 2002, the modis.gsfc.nasa.gov Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA's terra.nasa.gov Terra satellite captured this image of the southern Africa burning season still going strong. Numerous fires were detected by MODIS and are indicated with red dots. In the top half of the image is Zambia, and the Zambezi River can be seen as a prominent green line running southeast out of the upper left. In the southern past of the image are Botswana (left) and Zimbabwe...

The Ubinas Volcano in Peru released another plume of ash and/or steam on August 12, 2006. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer modis.gsfc.nasa.gov/ (MODIS) flying onboard NASA's terra.nasa.gov/ Terra satellite took this picture the same day. This plume remained intact for a distance of approximately 100 kilometers as it traveled toward the southeast. In this picture, the plume appears as a slightly dingy mass. A denser puffball of volcanic material over the volcano's summit, as...

Dust plumes blew off the west coast of Africa while a dusty haze spread over Cape Verde on January 8, 2008. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer modis.gsfc.nasa.gov (MODIS) on NASA's aqua.nasa.gov Aqua satellite took this picture the same day. This image shows relatively small, distinct dust plumes blowing straight west off the coast of Mauritania. It also shows a large, amorphous plume lingering over Cape Verde. The dust hanging over this archipelago was likely blown in that...

On June 21, 2008, plumes of Saharan dust blew off the west coast of Africa, forming a large arc south and west of Cape Verde. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer modis.gsfc.nasa.gov (MODIS) on NASA's aqua.nasa.gov Aqua satellite took this picture the same day. In this natural-color image, the diffuse dust plumes are thin enough to allow an easy view of the land and water below. Dust plumes near the coasts of Western Sahara and Mauritania are tan, while the dust blowing south of...

The European Space Agency's (ESA) Envisat satellite acquired this radar image of the oil slick off the coast of Spain, stretching more than 150 km, on Sunday, November 17, at 10:45 UTC. The image was captured by the Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar (ASAR) onboard the Envisat spacecraft, launched by ESA last March. The ASAR was operating in its wide-swath mode covering an area approximately 400 km by 400 km. ENVISAT data copyright ESA 2002. Distributed by www.rsi.ca/ RADARSAT International, a...

Dust from the Arabian Peninsula and a wake from Socotra Island may have collaborated to create dust streamers over the Arabian Sea in early September 2006. Wind passing over an island can create a affecting atmospheric patterns downwind. Satellites have long observed such phenomena in earthobservatory.nasa.gov/Newsroom/NewImages/images.php3?img_id=4487 clouds. On September 9, 2006, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer modis.gsfc.nasa.gov/ (MODIS) flying onboard NASA's...

In Alaska's Wrangell-St. Elias National Park, not far from a mountain named Sourdough Peak, a giant gray mass creeps down a slope, knocking over trees that lie in its path. Though it sounds like a work of science fiction, the gray mass is entirely natural. It is a rock glacier--a mass of rock and dirt held together by ice. Rock glaciers flow downslope very slowly compared to typical mountain glaciers. In some cases, the rock glaciers are stationary, and the gentler slopes of the glacier front...

Over the past two weeks, heavy rains have inundated southern Russia, giving rise to floods that killed up to 83 people and drove thousands from their homes. This false-color image acquired on June 23, 2002, by the Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard the terra.nasa.gov/''target=''outlink Terra satellite shows some of the worst flooding. The Black Sea is the dark patch in the lower left-hand corner. The city of Krasnodor, Russia, which was one of the cities hardest hit,...

On September 6, 2002, Typhoon Sinlaku grazed the northern half of Taiwan, forcing hundreds from their homes. The typhoon can be seen sweeping by Taiwan in this true-color image taken on September 6 by the modis.gsfc.nasa.gov Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), flying aboard NASA's terra.nasa.gov Terra spacecraft. The typhoon blew quickly by the island, packing sustained winds of 90 miles (145 kilometers) per hour. High surf and flash floods hit the island and led to the...
