In practical combustion systems, the flame is often anchored at the inlet where the fuel is injected into an air duct. This type of system is found in powerplant combustors, gas turbine combustors, and the jet engine afterburner. Despite its successful use, this configuration is vulnerable to adverse flow conditions that can cause the flame to literally lift off from the inlet or even blowout. Poor flame stability is, of course, unwanted, especially where safety has a high priority. Our...

At Cape Canaveral Air Station (CCAS), workers help guide the crane lifting a Centaur upper stage onto a transporter. The Centaur arrived at CCAS aboard a U.S. Air Force C-5c (far left). After being mated with the Atlas IIA lower stage, the rocket is scheduled to launch the NASA GOES-L satellite from Launch Pad 36A on May 15. Once in orbit, the satellite will become GOES-11, joining GOES-8, GOES-9 and GOES-10 in space. The fourth of a new advanced series of geostationary weather satellites for...

Circulation around a large brown spot in Saturn's atmosphere can be seen in this pair of green-filter Voyager 2 images taken Aug. 23 and 24 from distances of 2.7 million and 2.3 million kilometers (1.7 million and 1.4 million miles), respectively. The top frame was taken about 10 hours 15 minutes before that at bottom. Brighter clouds like that seen to the northwest of the spot (to the upper left in these views) are observed in this time-lapse comparison to move in an anti-cyclonic direction...

In this Voyager 2 observation of Saturn?s northern mid-latitudes is seen a strangely curled cloud attached by a thin ribbon to the bright white cloud region to the north. The cloud has been monitored for seven rotations around the planet. It appears to be forming a closed loop. Other discrete clouds are seen to the east. Also evident is the ?ribbonlike? structure at 47 north latitude in the white cloud region. The spacecraft took this image Aug. 16 from a distance of 9.3 million kilometers (5.8...
