We present a preliminary analysis of the photospheric activity of CoRoT-Exo-2a, a young G7V star accompanied by a transiting hot Jupiter recently discovered by CoRoT. We apply spot modelling techniques developed for the analysis of the Sun as a star and capable to extract from CoRoT high precision light curves information on the variation of the total spotted area and the longitude of active regions along the 142 days of the observations. This preliminary analysis shows that the active regions...

This paper is devoted to the equivalence of two type direct theorems in Approximation Theory: a) for smooth functions (Favard's estimates). b) for arbitrary continuous function (Jackson--Stechkin estimates). Specifically, we will show that Jackson--Stechkin inequality with optimal respect to the order of smoothness constants follows from Favard's inequality.

A discussion of a question, studied earlier by V.Veselago in 1967 and by J. Pendry in 2000, is given. The question is: can a slab of the material with negative refraction make a perfect lens? Pendry's conclusion was: yes, it can. Our conclusion is: no, in practice it cannot, because of the fluctuations of the refraction coefficient of the slab. Resolution ability of linear isoplanatic optical instruments is discussed.

A recipe is given for creating material with a desired refraction coefficient by embedding many small particles in a given material. To implement practically this recipe, some technological problems are to be solved. These problems are formulated.

The detection of the 100 GeV-TeV emission by a gamma-ray burst (GRB) will provide an unprecedented opportunity to study the nature of the central engine and the interaction between the relativistic flow and the environment of the burst's progenitor. In this paper we show that there are exciting prospects of detecting from the burst by MAGIC high-energy (HE) emission during the early X-ray flaring activity and, later, during the normal afterglow phase. We also identify the best observational...

The motion of satellite galaxies around normal galaxies at distances 50-500 kpc provides a sensitive test for the theories. We study the surface density and the velocities of satellites around isolated galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We find that the surface number-density of satellites declines with the projected distance as a power law with the slope -1.5-2. The rms velocities gradually decline: observations exclude constant velocities at a 10 sigma level. We show that observational...

The ANTARES detector was operated in a configuration with 5 lines for a period of 10 months from February until November 2007. The duty cycle was better than 80% during this period and almost 2*10**7 atmospheric muon triggers were collected. This large sample was used to test Monte Carlo simulation programs and to evaluate possible systematic effects due to uncertainties on environmental parameters and detector description. First results are presented and discussed.

We study the degree to which non-radiative gas dynamics affects the merger histories of haloes along with subsequent predictions from a semi-analytic model (SAM) of galaxy formation. To this aim, we use a sample of dark matter only and non-radiative SPH simulations of four massive clusters. The presence of gas-dynamical processes (e.g. ram-pressure from the hot ICM) makes haloes more fragile in the runs which include gas. This results in a 25 per cent decrease in the total number of subhaloes...

I studied experimentally the beam self-collimation and splitting in two-dimensional microwave photonic crystals. Using a microwave photonic crystal fabricated from alumina rods, I present an experimental proof of principle for an earlier theoretical proposal [A. Matthews et al., Opt. Commun. 279, 313 (2007)] of a photonic crystal beam splitter based on the self-collimation effect.

Remarkable technical advances in cell phones and smart phones have resulted in a worldwide marketplace permeated by mobile devices. These capabilities, in combination with increasing consumers demand to share information show the need for utilizing the mobile devices more efficiently. But, within a distributed network of mobile devices like TwiddleNet, the two most limiting resources are still battery power and bandwidth. By distributing only small sets of data that represent the actual...

Just as Tafseer 'Ibn Katheer is the most concise and matchless exegesis from a narrative point of view so also there is no parallel to Tafseer-i-Kabeer (Mafaatihu-l-Ghawybb) in relation to sciences of Reason. Some people have passed a funny remark on this exegesis such as is written in Al-Itqawn, "In it, there is everything except exegesis," But, in the opinion of Mufti Muhammadd Taqee Uthmanee (DB), if this comment applies to any Tafseer, it describes Tafseer At-Tawaahir by Tantawee....

Text-based chat systems are widely used within the Department of Defense, but the standard systems available do not provide robust capabilities for search, information retrieval, or information assurance. As part of the research, we manually annotated over 20,000 Internet Relay Chat posts with conversation thread information and constructed...

It has been established by Inoue that a complex locally C*-algebra with a dense ideal posesses a bounded approximate identity which belonges to that ideal. It has been shown by Fritzsche that if a unital complex locally C*-algebra has an unbounded element then it also has a dense one-sided ideal. In the present paper we obtain analogues of the aforementioned results of Inoue and Fritzsche for real locally C*-algebras (projective limits of projective families of real C*-algebras), and for...

We consider the structure of the derived categories of coherent sheaves on Fano threefolds with Picard number 1 and describe a strange relation between derived categories of different threefolds. In the Appendix we discuss how the ring of algebraic cycles of a smooth projective variety is related to the Grothendieck group of its derived category.

Let $(W,H,\mu)$ be the classical Wiener space, assume that $U=I_W+u$ is an adapted perturbation of identity satisfying the Girsanov identity. Then, $U$ is invertible if and only if the kinetic energy of $u$ is equal to the relative entropy of the measure induced with the action of $U$ on the Wiener measure $\mu$, in other words $U$ is invertible if and only if $$ \half \int_W|u|_H^2d\mu=\int_W \frac{dU\mu}{d\mu}\log\frac{dU\mu}{d\mu}d\mu . $$

The use of unmanned aerial vehicles on the battlefield becomes more and more important every day. Parallel to this growing demand, there is a need for robust algorithms to solve the mission assignment problem in an optimum way. There are several tools for solving the assignment problem and testing the results to evaluate the robustness of the proposed algorithm. For most of the models, input factors are limited to the most important ones to make the process simpler. The aim of this thesis is to...

Public transportation systems across the United States have faced an unprecedented increase in fuel costs and a huge increase in the demand for service. Public transportation ridership in 2007 hit its highest level in 50 years and the rate of ridership growth more than doubled in the first half of 2008. This report is a follow-up to the APTA report “Impact of Rising Fuel Prices on Transit Service” released in May 2008. It is based on a survey of APTA transit agency members conducted in July...
