This 31-item test bibliography lists currently available measures of attitudes toward school and school adjustment. The construct--attitudes toward school--encompasses pupils' attitudes toward themselves as learners, learning as a process, the school environment or classroom situation, specific school subjects, and teachers. In addition, the pupils' behavior is considered if it is indicative of their adjustment or lack of adjustment to the educational environment. Teacher ratings, self-report...

This publication presents three suggested social studies curriculum units designed for the bilingual Spanish-English classroom, but which would also be useful in advanced Spanish language classes for English speakers. The units, developed for grades 7-11, are entitled, "Procedures for Driving,""Maintenance of an Automobile," and "Tires," and are to be used for driver education instruction. Each unit contains explanatory information and lesson plans for the teacher,...

Utilizing a grant from the Office of Economic Opportunity, the Rochester Schools Alternative Study has been established to study the possibilities of developing an education system which would: (1) include a variety of learning programs based partially on the best aspects of those previously tried and (2) provide parents and teachers a choice in selecting the school with which they wish to be associated. Such a choice would allow teachers to select a teaching situation which would maximize the...

This committee report represents almost a year of study of the various issues relating to the structure and organization of the constitutionally mandated board of education in Illinois. The committee's 31 recommendations are based on solicited expert testimony and a series of background and position papers. In addition, a highly detailed questionnaire, distributed to more than 50 organizations or individuals known to have an interest in the subject, was a resource. A list of resources appears...

Most studies either concentrate on situational variants or relate specifically to differences in interpersonal relationships involved. Therefore, difficulties arise in setting up control groups, the timing of post-measurements, and the use of varied intervention techniques. Dilemmas are caused by focusing on projected, rather than on desired, outcomes. Additionally, attempts to derive conclusions are limited because many studies (1) fail to specify the conditions under which a relationship...

Twenty-six structural variables were defined and investigated using a set of algebraic word problems solved by 96 college students. The study attempted to identify a small independent well-defined set of arithmetic, linguistic, and algebraic structural variables which account for a maximum amount of the variance of the observed probability correct of algebra word problems. Findings showed that one linguistic variable, two algebraic variables, and three arithmetic variables entered in the first...

In this speech, the authors contend that the adoption of a marketing approach by the disseminators of educational research and development product might well lead to a more effective way of getting products into use by educators. The marketing concept as defined comprises the planning of a coordinated set of products and programs to serve the needs of existing and potential customers. The authors explain how this marketing approach to dissemination might be adapted and applied by a product...

The Center for the Study of Evaluation (CSE) model identifies conditions under which evaluators intervene in educational programs, provides for a sequence of evaluation activities and conditions under which departures from this sequence occurs, and defines the relationship between the evaluator and the decision maker. This paper provides a study of these aspects of the CSE model in the context of the evaluation of a preschool serving American Indian children in south-central Los Angeles, and...

The preferences of students for the learning environments and roles they must assume under two divergent instructional models--traditional group-oriented instruction and the self-instructional models--were examined. The study was conducted in two phases; Phase I focused on answering the questions concerning the convergence or divergence of student preference and the relationship of student characteristics to instructional choice; and Phase II undertook the investigation of student preferences...

A new technique called computer augmented lectures (CAL) now in use at the University of Texas at Austin is discussed in this report. The technique is described as involving the integration of on-line interactive time-sharing computer terminals and theater-size video projectors for large screen display, the goal being to promote student learning by supplementing the lecture presentation of fundamental concepts in various fields. The basic idea and history of CAL are reviewed and its pedagogical...

The relative contributions of the Kerr, electrostrictive, and thermal effects to the self-focusing thresholds of borosilicate crown glass, fused silica, and dense flint glass have been estimated from an analysis of damage threshold data for linearly polarized and circularly polarized radiation. The measurements were made with a Nd:glass laser operating in the TEMoo mode with a temporal pulse width of 25 ns. Self-focusing data obtained with linearly polarized and circularly polarized radiation...

Given n observations from each of k normal populations with common known variance (sigma squared), the value of the largest of the k means (whose values are not known) is to be estimated using the largest value of the k sample means. It is desired to design a sampling rule which guarantees that the Mean Squared Error (M.S.E.) of the estimate does not exceed a given bound regardless of the configuration of values of the k means.

An operationally reliable miniature version of an all-secondary- explosive, low-voltage electric detonator has been developed and produced in test quantities. This safe detonator is based on the design which earlier was proven feasible. The detonator consists essentially of a donor explosive combustion chamber, an impactor disc, an airgap, and an acceptor explosive column which provides for proper coupling of the following three critical processes: (1) Hot-wire initiation of a self-sustaining...

Current progress is reported on the inelastic scattering, capture, and activation gamma ray portions of the Combined Pulsed Neutron Experiment (CPNE). Experiments are described which have enabled a reduction in weight of the experimental probe to 7.3 kg. Parametric studies are described which enabled the optimization of experimental parameters (e.g., gate time settings, neutron pulse rate, etc.). Estimated detection sensitivities using this light weight probe and the optimized experimental...

The possibility of automatically obtaining statistical morphological characteristics of portions of the lunar surface from photographic imagery is discussed. Practical ways of realizing the possiblity are examined. Obtaining some statistical morphological characteristics of a region by analogy methods using a coherent light beam technique is described. It is shown that this method is also applicable to planets.

Spectrophotometric investigation of Jupiter for the purpose of determining ultraviolet absorption for different regions of Jupiter's disk region are presented. About 100 spectrograms were taken during 1969 (January - April). It is shown that ultraviolet absorption in Jupiter's atmosphere is real and the quantity of effect for positions of the spectrograph's vision slit equals minus 0.33. Time variations are observed in the course of reflectivity for different regions of Jupiter's disk. The...

RADIOSCOPIC OBSERVATIONS AT LAMBDA = 32 WERE PERFORMED. FREQUENCY CHANGES GAVE REFRACTION INDICES, WHICH DEPEND ON ELECTRON CONCENTRATION (IONOSPHERE) AND P AND T (TROPOSPHERE), AND ARE FOUND AS A FUNCTION OF ALTITUDE, WHICH TURNS OUT TO BE EXPONENTIAL. TEMPERATURE GRADIENTS FOUND WERE LOW - LESS THAN 1.5 K/KM ALTITUDE. CURVES OF P, F CHANGE, AND ELECTRON CONCENTRATION ARE GIVEN. PARAMETERS FOUND INCLUDE: PRESSURE NEAR THE NOMINAL SURFACE, 7.0 OR - 2 MBAR; CONCENTRATION OF ATOMS AT THE SURFACE,...
