The nucleation and growth of diamond crystals on single crystal copper surfaces implanted with carbon ions has been studied. Microwave plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition was used for diamond growth. The single crystal copper substrates were implanted either at room temperature or at elevated temperature (-820 degC) with carbon ions prior to diamond nucleation. This procedure leads to the formation of a graphite film on the copper surface which greatly enhances diamond crystallite...

Molecular dynamics simulations which make use of a many-body analytic potential function have been used to study the nanometer-scale indentation of diamond and graphite. We find that the simulation correctly reproduces experimentally determined trends in load versus penetration data. As a result, trends in mechanical properties, e.g. Young's modulus, are also reproduced.

A windowed strand burner with a propellant feed mechanism has been used to characterize the steady-state combustion of solid propellants over a pressure environment of 0.1-2.0 MPa nitrogen. Under conditions where a line of sight measurement is meaningful, temperatures and absolute concentrations can be extracted from optical absorption spectra An arc lamp light source and spectrometer-intensified photiode array detector systems provided the means to absorption spectra for NO through the dark...

It is generally acknowledged that non-linear systems exhibit important features that cannot be understood, controlled, or exploited without addressing their behavior in a non-linear form. We describe qualitative and quantitative techniques for the description of non-linear dynamic systems. These techniques are illustrated through the analysis of symmetric chaos.

A commander must have the means to control his forces. This is a fact that is understood, but is not easily accomplished. In northern operations, command and control communications is often more difficult to install and maintain than in other areas. Operations in vast, sparsely populated areas with extreme climatic and terrain conditions make the development of a command and control communications network a detailed task. This paper presents some of the factors that must be taken into...

The design concept, operational capabilities, and testing process used in developing a Universal Air Gun Launcher (UGAL) System is briefly outlined. This report is intended as a companion and supplement to a final report (CRDEC-CR-103) entitled, Universal Launcher System, written by the MRC chamberlain Corporation under Contract No. DAAA15-87-D-0019, Task 44.

Vetrotex RH glass woven roving fabric impregnated with Cyanamid CYCOM 4102 polyester resin was evaluated for structural armor applications. The mechanical and ballistic properties of this system were compared to MIL-L-46197 (MR) requirements. The specific lot of RH glass evaluated under this effort met MIL-L-46197 (MR) requirements. S-2 and RH fiberglass/polyester systems should meet specification requirements when manufactured and processed in strict compliance with MIL-L-46197(MR). The...

Swedish helmets 113-B and 116 were fitted to a large Advanced Dynamic Anthropomorphic Manikin (ADAM) and subjected to impacts of 8, 10, 15, and 20 G in the +z axis on the Armstrong Laboratory vertical deceleration tower, with neck loading data recorded. Laboratory tests were also performed in order to determine the mass properties of the helmets. The data were analyzed in order to determine the structural integrity and loading effects of the helmets, and the results compared to similar data...

This article provides an historical report, with contemporary analysis, of why National Guard combat maneuver units have never been employed effectively in their federal role through Vietnam. It discusses political reality, the historical rift between regulars and citizen soldiers, and mobilization outcomes--including analysis of the total-force roundout policy and the impact that the Desert Shield/Storm call up will have on its future. Conclusion explains three imperatives for consideration...

This digest addresses the importance to professional practice of ethics and shared values, focusing on the fields of health, physical education, recreation, and dance (HPRD). Practitioners in these fields routinely deal with situations that call upon moral reasoning and the articulation of values such as instruction about personal health, sexual behavior, use of alcohol and tobacco, fair play, and how one spends leisure time. While a unified code of ethics, covering a host of different...

The purpose of the study was to compare two regression-based approaches for measuring educational effectiveness in Tennessee high schools: the mean residual approach (MR), and a more general linear models (LM) approach. Data were obtained from a sample of 1,011 students who were enrolled in 48 high schools, and who had taken the Comprehensive Tests of Basic Skills (CTBS) in grade 8 and the Preliminary American College Test Plus (P-ACT+) in grade 10. Regression models were developed for...

Seven elementary, junior high, and high schools participate in the Memphis City Deregulation Program (MCDP), a school-based decision making program in which the principle of shared leadership is a key concept. Shared leadership requires a shift from traditional roles, responsibilities, and power relationships. This study focuses on 49 teachers in this program who assumed new roles as educational leaders, serving as department and grade-level chairs. Through semi-structured interviews, data were...

This case study evaluates the case of a 20-year-old young Australian adult born with agenesis of the corpus callosum, the area of the brain uniting the hemispheres. Deficits commonly associated with agenesis of the corpus callosum are mental retardation, motor involvement, seizure activity, and lateral transfer difficulties. The report: (1) identifies the types of collosal lesions, results of sectioning of the corpus callosum, and difficulties resulting from agenesis of the corpus callosum; (2)...

Findings of a study that examined the teacher-administrator relationship from a micropolitical perspective are presented in this paper. Data were derived from interviews with 12 new administrators from school districts within a 50-mile radius of a major metropolitan area in the eastern United States. Theoretical and experimental studies have shown that chiral composites constructed by embedding chiral inclusions in an otherwise achiral lossy medium enhance power absorption in the microwave frequency range. Chiral composites can hence be used as microwave absorbers to achieve rapid heating during microwave processing of ceramics, glass, and composites. Power absorption bands of chiral composites are discussed and the corresponding ratio of the one turn length of the chiral inclusion to the...
