A direct numerical simulation of a plane turbulent mixing layer has been performed. The simulation was initialized using two turbulent velocity fields obtained from direct numerical simulation of a turbulent boundary layer at momentum thickness Reynolds number 300 (Spalart, 1988). The mixing layer is allowed to evolve long enough for self-similar linear growth to occur, with the visual thickness Reynolds number reaching 14,000. The simulated flow is examined for evidence of the coherent...

A general systems approach is taken to studying the emergent properties of the human perception/action system. Two task domains, the control of locomotion and the recognition of objects, are used to study human performance. The locomotion task involves the control of altitude. Experiments are described that will manipulate the type of texture, the speed of forward motion, and altitude. A general hypothesis is presented that performance in the altitude control task is a function of the...

This technical note presents a Kalman filtering approach that is used for filtering narrowband interferers out of direct sequence spread spectrum signals. The approach is based on the digital phase-locked loop Kalman filter and is close to optimum in so far as demodulating an FM-type of interferer. Because the interference is assumed to be much stronger than either the signal or noise, the Kalman filter locks onto the interference and produces estimates of its phase and envelope. The algorithm...

The cause of the phenomenon of steady asymmetric flow on cones at moderately high angles of attack is the subject of this investigation. At very higher angles of attack, the flow will become unsteady with a Karman vortex street being shed downstream. This second phenomenon was not considered in the current research project. The investigation used computational fluid dynamics as a tool to uncover the fundamental cause of asymmetric separated flows. The appearance of new flow features as the...

The work patterns of women with some work experience over the 1976 to 1989 period were examined as they approach retirement, using data from the Mature Women's cohort of the National Longitudinal Surveys. The data provided information on a sample of women who were between the ages of 30 and 45 in 1967 and who have been interviewed regularly since then. The analysis focused on the years 1967-89, during which the women changed from ages 39-54 to 52-67. The study found that married women reduce...

Cycle life and safety of delta-LiAl/TiS2 cells were evaluated using laboratory and AA-size cells. Analysis of the alloys (which contained 60, 70, 80, or 85 wt-pct. lithium and are designated 60 LiAl etc.) showed them to contain a mixture of elemental Li and Al4Li9. Cycling efficiencies correlated with the amount of free lithium in the anode. Using an electrolyte with the composition 48 v/o THF:48 v/o 2-MeTHF:4 v/o 2-MeF/LiAsF6(1.5M), a 70 LiAl/TiS2 laboratory cell yielded a cycling efficiency...

GaInSb/InAs superlattices have been grown and analyzed for use as high performance, high operating temperature 8 to 12 micron infrared detectors. Optical and transport properties favorable for long wavelength IR detection have been measured, and preliminary photoconductive and photovoltaic device structures have been fabricated and tested. Our results underscore the considerable potential of GaInSb/InAs superlattices to achieve detectivities comparable to HgCdTe at considerably higher operating...

This study was conducted to determine the effects of extracurricular participation on student drug and alcohol use in secondary schools. The study surveyed students in grades 5 through 12 who participated in athletics, government/clubs, and music/drama. Data were collected from 5,639 students from four midwestern schools in suburban/rural settings. The findings revealed that over 70% of the students were involved in one or more extracurricular activities. Twenty-four percent of students in...

Recent educational reform by proponents of multiculturalism and diversity has tended to identify with cultures other than the dominant one and to embrace variations in race, gender, age, or others. However, this trend has caused a backlash by conservative elements against what has become known as "political correctness," a backlash which in turn has been extended to include an attack on the new emphasis on critical thinking. Critical thinking should be thought of as the foundation of...

The Kindergarten Center in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, promotes the philosophy that children of kindergarten age acquire knowledge in ways that are different from the way older children learn. Younger children learn best through direct sensory encounters with the world and not through formal academic processes. In 1990 Daniel Bellack advised in an article that business people should "give up the search for the fabled 'global customer.' There's no such thing. Instead, be sure you understand each local market--it's custom, culture, and, of course, language." Understanding each local market is a big challenge for the communication professional in a multicultural organization, especially when American business is known more for its ethnocentrism and ignorance of culture generally. There are...

For the past two years at NTU, I have been running a fourth year Bachelor of Education course on science issues. The majority of those doing the course are working primary teachers from a variety of backgrounds. The first part of the course consists of the history and philosophy of science, whilst the second part concerns science issues. The reason that I introduced some basic principles of ethics into the course, was so that, as a group, we could try to use some common benchmarks to judge the...
