We analyze elastic-pion nucleon scattering to third order in the so-called small scale expansion. It is based on an effective Lagrangian including pions, nucleons and deltas as active degrees of freedom and counting external momenta, the pion mass and the nucleon-delta mass splitting as small parameters. The fermion fields are considered as very heavy. We present results for phase shifts, threshold parameters and the sigma term. We discuss the convergence of the approach. A detailed comparison...

Fermions on the lattice have bosonic excitations generated from the underlying periodic background. These, the lattice bosons, arise near the empty band or when the bands are nearly full. They do not depend on the nature of the interactions and exist for any fermion-fermion coupling. We discuss these lattice boson solutions for the Dirac Hamiltonian.

CMELog is a highly configurable program allowing easy tracking of continuing professional development credits. The initial settings are designed for medical professionals, but may easily be changed to accommodate professionals in other fields. Do away with those Data and Sheet files you've been using. Now, all you have to do is enter the continuing education events into CMELog and let the program do the monitoring.

Rising ocean temperatures are having a significant negative impact on coral reefs in many parts of the world. When temperatures rise too much, the coral expel the colorful algae that grow symbiotically with them. Without the algae, the coral turn white, a process known as bleaching. While bleaching may be an adaptive mechanism that allows corals to take up with a different species of algae that may be more tolerant of changing water conditions, bleaching that is intense, sustained, or frequent...

We investigate the effect of pair creation on a shock structure. Actually, particles accelerated by a shock can be sufficiently energetic to boost, via Inverse Compton process for example, surrounding soft photons above the rest mass electron energy and thus to trigger the pair creation process. The increase of the associated pair pressure is thus able to disrupt the plasma flow and possibly, for too high pressure, to smooth it completely. Reversely, significant changes of the flow velocity...

Measurements of the power-law corrections to Bjorken scaling and the behavior of structure functions in the highly stressed $x_{bj} \to 1$ regime of electroproduction can lead to new information on the quark-quark correlations controlling the nucleon wavefunction at far-off-shell kinematics. Electroproduction on nuclei at $ A > x_{bj} > 1$ is sensitive to hidden-color components of the nuclear wavefunction. A distinctive dynamical higher-twist ${\cal O}(1/Q^2)$ correction, which is...

The paper develops a version of modal logic that stays completely within the framework provided by quantum principles, and then proves, within the framework of quantum thinking, and in particular without invoking "hidden variables", a Bell-type nonlocality result.

In an induced-gravity model, the stability condition of an inflationary slow-rollover solution is shown to be $\phi_0 \partial_{\phi_0}V(\phi_0)=4V(\phi_0)$. The presence of higher derivative terms will, however, act against the stability of this expanding solution unless further constraints on the field parameters are imposed. We find that these models will acquire a non-vanishing cosmological constant at the end of inflation. Some models are analyzed for their implication to the early...

We discuss the construction of wave packets resulting from the solutions of a class of Wheeler-DeWitt equations in Robertson-Walker type cosmologies. We present an ansatz for the initial conditions which leads to a unique determination of the expansion coefficients in the construction of the wave packets with probability distributions which, in an interesting contrast to some of the earlier works, agree well with all possible classical paths. The possible relationship between these initial...

We use time series observations from the SOHO and Yohkoh spacecraft to study solar polar rays. Contrary to our expectations, we find that the rays are associated with active regions on the sun and are not features of the polar coronal holes. They are extended, hot plasma structures formed in the active regions and projected onto the plane of the sky above the polar coronal holes. We present new observations and simple projection models that match long-lived polar ray structures seen in limb...

Mocha W32 PPP is an application for the Windows-95/98 Platform. It can be used to connect your WinCE handheld to a Windows 95/98, either directly through a serial cable or the Hot-Sync adapter, giving direct access to the Internet network on your local PC. With Mocha W32 PPP, you won't need a modem to use TCP/IP applications, which will come in handy since you don't need to be on the phone all day.

A Kahler metric is said to be Bochner-Kahler if its Bochner curvature vanishes. This is a nontrivial condition when the complex dimension of the underlying manifold is at least 2. In this article it will be shown that, in a certain well-defined sense, the space of Bochner-Kahler metrics in complex dimension n has real dimension n+1 and a recipe for an explicit formula for any Bochner-Kahler metric will be given. It is shown that any Bochner-Kahler metric in complex dimension n has local (real)...

We present the results of a mid-infrared (7 micron) imaging survey of a sample of 24 starless dense cores carried out at an angular resolution of 6 arcsec with the ISOCAM camera aboard the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO). The targeted cores are believed to be pre-stellar in nature and to represent the initial conditions of low-mass, isolated star formation. In previous submillimeter dust continuum studies of such pre-stellar cores, it was found that the derived column density profiles did not...
