The construction of twisted K-theory classes on a compact Lie group is reviewed using the supersymmetric Wess-Zumino-Witten model on a cylinder. The Quillen superconnection is introduced for a family of supercharges parametrized by a compact Lie group and the Chern character is explicitly computed in the case of SU(2). For large euclidean time, the character form is localized on a D-brane.

Just days after a June 21 dust storm, another thick plume of dust blew off the east coast of Sudan on June 28, 2006. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer modis.gsfc.nasa.gov/ (MODIS) flying onboard NASA's aqua.nasa.gov/ Aqua satellite took this picture the same day. In this image, the dust plume blows off the coast and forms an arc over the Red Sea, headed toward the southeast. Along the Sudanese coast is a dry salt lake, which could provide some of the dust in this storm. NASA...

Context. The knowledge of the point-spread function compensated by adaptive optics is of prime importance in several image restoration techniques such as deconvolution and astrometric/photometric algorithms. Wavefront-related data from the adaptive optics real-time computer can be used to accurately estimate the point-spread function in adaptive optics observations. The only point-spread function reconstruction algorithm implemented on astronomical adaptive optics system makes use of particular...

Maximally extended, explicit and regular coverings of the Schwarzschild - de Sitter family of vacua are given, first in spacetime (generalizing a result due to Israel) and then for all dimensions $D$ (assuming a $D-2$ sphere). It is shown that these coordinates offer important advantages over the well known Kruskal - Szekeres procedure.

We study the impact of setting initial conditions in numerical simulations using the standard procedure based on the Zel'dovich approximation (ZA). As it is well known from perturbation theory, ZA initial conditions have incorrect second and higher-order growth and therefore excite long-lived transients in the evolution of the statistical properties of density and velocity fields. We also study the improvement brought by using more accurate initial conditions based on second-order Lagrangian...

We investigate the possibility that the BEC-like phenomena recently detected on two-dimensional finite trapped systems consist of fragmented condensates. We derive and diagonalize the one-body density matrix of a two-dimensional isotropically trapped Bose gas at finite temperature. For the ideal gas, the procedure reproduces the exact harmonic-oscillator eigenfunctions and the Bose distribution. We use a new collocation-minimization method to study the interacting gas in the Hartree-Fock...

In this paper, using techniques of value distribution theory, we give a uniqueness theorem for meromorphic mappings of C^m into P^n with truncated multiplicities and "few" targets. We also give a theorem of linear degeneration for such maps with truncated multiplicities and moving targets.

This is a review article on the Gauss-Manin system associated to the complete intersection singularities of projection. We show how the logarithmic vector fields appear as coefficients to the Gauss-Manin system. We examine further how the multiplication table on the Jacobian quotient module calculates the logarithmic vector fields tangent to the discriminant and the bifurcation set . As applications, we establish signature formulae for Euler characteristics of real hypersurfaces and real...

We have compiled a complete extragalactic sample based on 25,000 deg^2 to a limiting flux of 3E-11 ergs/cm**2/sec (7,000 deg^2 to a flux limit of 1E-11 ergs/cm**2/sec) in the 20 - 40 keV band with INTEGRAL. We have constructed a detailed exposure map to compensate for effects of non-uniform exposure. The flux-number relation is best described by a power-law with a slope of alpha = 1.66+-0.11. The integration of the cumulative flux per unit area leads to f = 2.6E-10 ergs/cm**2/sec/sr, which is...

We have used the HST/ACS images to identify 4700 Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) in GOODS. We present the results from a parametric analysis of the 2-D surface brightness profiles, for 1333 LBGs at z > 2.5 with rest-frame UV(1600 Angstrom) AB magnitude < -20.5. Based on the Sersic index, n, which measures the profile shape, we find that about 40% of LBGs at z=3 have light profiles close to exponential, and only 30% have the high concentrations seen for spheroids. About 30% of LBGs appear to...

We investigate the effects of the intense terahertz laser field and the spin-orbit coupling on single electron spin in a quantum dot. The laser field and the spin-orbit coupling can strongly affect the electron density of states and can excite a magnetic moment. The direction of the magnetic moment depends on the symmetries of the system, and its amplitude can be tuned by the strength and frequency of the laser field as well as the spin-orbit coupling.

In this paper we prove the existence of the high-energy tails for electron distribution function of the Boltzmann equation for semiconductors, in the stationary and homogeneous regime, in the analytic band approximation and scattering with acoustic and optical phonons and impurities. We also prove numerically that the tail is a global maxwellian in the parabolic band approximation, and in the quasi parabolic band case, a power law of the global maxwellian.

We introduce a hyperbolic Gauss map into the Poincare disk for any surface in H^2xR with regular vertical projection, and prove that if the surface has constant mean curvature H=1/2, this hyperbolic Gauss map is harmonic. Conversely, we show that every nowhere holomorphic harmonic map from an open simply connected Riemann surface into the Poincare disk is the hyperbolic Gauss map of a two-parameter family of such surfaces. As an application we obtain that any holomorphic quadratic differential...

The aim of this paper is to show how differential characters of Abelian varieties can be used to construct differential modular forms of weight 0 and order 2 which are eigenvectors of Hecke operators. These differential modular forms have "essentially the same" eigenvalues as certain classical complex eigenforms of weight 2.

With event rates greater than 1MHz, the CDF-II trigger system is crucial for selecting interesting events for subsequent analysis. This document provides an overview of the Track Extrapolation System (XTRP), a component of the CDF-II trigger system. The XTRP is a fully digital system that is utilized in the...
