Trigonometric parallax astrometry and BVI photometry are presented for two late-type subdwarf candidates, LSR1425+71 (sdM8.0) and LSR1610-00 (sd?M6pec). For the former we measure an absolute parallax of 13.37+/-0.51 mas yielding Mv=15.25+/-0.09. The astrometry for LSR1610-00 shows that this object is an astrometric binary with a period of 1.66+/-0.01 yr. The photocentric orbit is derived from the data; it has a moderate eccentricity (e ~ 0.44+/-0.02) and a semi-major axis of 0.28+/-0.01 AU...

The sequence of pitches which form a musical melody can be transposed or inverted. Since the 1970s, music theorists have modeled musical transposition and inversion in terms of an action of the dihedral group of order 24. More recently music theorists have found an intriguing second way that the dihedral group of order 24 acts on the set of major and minor chords. We illustrate both geometrically and algebraically how these two actions are {\it dual}. Both actions and their duality have been...

The acceleration of the universe can be explained either through dark energy or through the modification of gravity on large scales. In this paper we investigate modified gravity models and compare their observable predictions with dark energy models. Modifications of general relativity are expected to be scale-independent on super-horizon scales and scale-dependent on sub-horizon scales. For scale-independent modifications, utilizing the conservation of the curvature scalar and a parameterized...

We present visible and near-infrared reflectance spectra and interpreted surface mineralogy for asteroid 10537 (1991 RY16). The spectrum of this object is without precedent amongst the Main Belt asteroids. A unique absorption band centered at 0.63 microns could be attributed to one of several mineralogies. Pronounced 1- and 2-micron absorption bands suggest that the composition of 10537 is a mixture of pyroxenes and olivine and that it originated from a parent body that was partially or fully...

We study a variant of bootstrap percolation in which growth is restricted to a single active cluster. Initially there is a single active site at the origin, while other sites of Z^2 are independently occupied with small probability p, otherwise empty. Subsequently, an empty site becomes active by contact with 2 or more active neighbors, and an occupied site becomes active if it has an active site within distance 2. We prove that the entire lattice becomes active with probability...

More than 7,000 kilometers (4,400 miles) long and more than 500 kilometers (300 miles) wide in places, the Andes Mountains encompass a wide range of climates and habitats, from snow-capped mountain peaks to rainforests to high deserts. This picture, acquired by NASA's Landsat 7 satellite, shows a dramatic change in landscape about 250 kilometers southeast of la Paz, the capital of Bolivia. Probably the most striking feature in this natural-color image is the dramatic change between the tan...

The two-maneuver battalion design of the modular brigade combat team (BCT) was intended to be as lethal as pre-modularity Army of Excellence brigades while creating as many BCTs as possible. The troop density required for conducting stability operations was not a consideration of the design. The Army has had two opportunities to add troops to the modular BCTs, in January 2004 and in December 2007. In both instances, the decision was to add BCTs. This study identifies the costs and benefits of...

The Base Realignment and Closure Commission (BRAC) 2005 decision resulted in the consolidation of Naval Air Depots (NADEPs) and non-deployable Aircraft Intermediate Maintenance Departments (AIMDs) to form six Fleet Readiness Centers (FRCs). The intent behind this consolidation is to avoid redundant maintenance procedures, supply overhead charges and reduce aviation maintenance costs. The Department of Defense (DoD) estimates FRCs will yield $3.7 billion in net savings over 20 years. This is...

In spite of a late entry into World War I, the United States found itself unprepared to adequately equip its expeditionary forces for combat operations in Europe. After the War, Congress passed the National Defense Act of 1920, which tasked the Assistant Secretary of War with establishing a unified procurement program for the services and preparing the country for industrial mobilization in the event of another national conflict. Two years later the Army and Navy Munitions Board (ANMB) was...

With the perceived lack of a peer competitor to an air superiority threat, the US military's recapitalization of the tactical aircraft fleet has been greatly scrutinized. The F-22 and Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) have been vulnerable to a multitude of criticisms when viewed under the warfare experienced during or in Operations ENDURING FREEDOM and IRAQI FREEDOM. Within the current war construct, the incredibly high cost to the US Government for these aircraft programs will undoubtedly have a...

An attempt to solve this dilemma is playing out in Army Transformation as the Army and the Army Medical Department (AMEDD) leadership struggle with how to flatten medical command and control structures. We study non-topological solitons, so called Q-balls, which carry a non-vanishing Noether charge and arise as lump solutions of self-interacting complex scalar field models. Explicit examples of new axially symmetric non-spinning Q-ball solutions that have not been studied so far are constructed numerically. These solutions can be interpreted as angular excitations of the fundamental $Q$-balls and are related to the spherical harmonics. Correspondingly, they have higher energy and their energy...

We present a low-noise, high modulation-bandwidth design for a laser current driver with excellent long term stability. The driver improves upon the commonly-used Hall-Libbrecht design. The current driver can be operated remotely by way of a micro-processing unit, which controls the current set point digitally. This allows precise repeatability and improved accuracy and stability. It also allows the driver to be placed near the laser for reduced noise and for lower phase lag when using the...

Which state does lose less quantum information between GHZ and W states when they are prepared for two-party quantum teleportation through noisy channel? We address this issue by solving analytically a master equation in the Lindbald form with introducing the noisy channels which makes the quantum channels to be mixed states. It is found that the answer of the question is dependent on the type of the noisy channel. If, for example, the noisy channel is ($L_{2,x}$, $L_{3,x}$, $L_{4,x}$)-type...

In the preceding paper (arXiv : 0710.2724 [quant-ph]) we have constructed the general solution for the master equation of quantum damped harmonic oscillator, which is given by the complicated infinite series in the operator algebra level. In this paper we give the explicit and compact forms to solutions (density operators) for some initial values. In particular, the compact one for the initial value based on a coherent state is given, which has not been given as far as we know. Moreover, some...

We give necessary and sufficient conditions for the (bounded) law of the iterated logarithm for canonical $U$-statistics of arbitrary order $d$, extending the previously known results for $d=2$. The nasc's are expressed as growth conditions on a parameterized family of norms associated with the $U$-statistics kernel.
