We present the theory and measurement of valley splitting in a quantum point contact (QPC) in a modulation doped Si/SiGe heterostructure. Our measurements are performed on a submicron Schottky-gated device. An effective mass theory is developed for a QPC formed in a quantum well, grown on a miscut substrate. We study the consequences of disorder in the Kitaev honeycomb model, considering both site dilution and exchange randomness. We show that a single vacancy binds a flux and induces a local moment. We present next-to-leading order QCD corrections to production of two $W$ bosons at the LHC in the Randall-Sundrum model. Various kinematical distributions are obtained to order $\alpha_s$ in QCD by taking into account all the parton level subprocesses. We estimate the impact of the QCD corrections on various observables and find that they are significant. We also show the reduction in factorization scale uncertainty when ${\cal O}(\alpha_s)$ effects are included.
