Afshin Rattansi goes underground on BAE systems recent annual general meeting. Andrew Smith form Campaigners Against The Arms Trade attended the AGM, where he questioned BAE on their sales of arms to repressive regimes like Bahrain and Saudi Arabia who fund Al Quaeda-linked groups such as Al-Nusra, and Boko Haram. He also tells us how our government and people like Business Secretary Vince Cable are promoting weapons sales to countries that abuse human rights. The young people of Britain have...

Recent observations show that the cosmic ray nuclei spectra start to harden above 100 GeV, in contradiction with the conventional steady-state cosmic ray model. We had suggested that this anomaly is due to the propagation effect of cosmic rays released from local young cosmic ray sources, the total flux of the cosmic ray should be computed with the myriad model, where contribution from sources in local catalog is added to the background. However, while the hardening could be elegantly explained...

We performed a nuclear magnetometry study on quantum Hall ferromagnet with a bilayer total filling factor of $\nu_{\rm{tot}} = 2$. We found not only a rapid nuclear relaxation but also a sudden change in the nuclear spin polarization distribution after a one-second interaction with a canted antiferromagnetic phase. We discuss the possibility of observing cooperative phenomena coming from nuclear spin ensemble triggered by electrons with collective spin interactions.

We present a quite simple analytical study on the appearance or absence of naked singularities in binary systems. As an example we consider the double Reissner-Nordstr\"om solution and fix the conditions it should satisfy in order to avoid or develop singular surfaces off the axis. The proof shows that singular surfaces appear as a consequence of the presence of negative masses in the solution.

We reexamine the snapshot entropy of the Ising and three-states Potts models on the LxL square lattice. Focusing on the factorization of the snapshot matrix, we find that the entropy at Tc scales asymptotically as S=(c/3)lnL consistent with the entanglement entropy in one-dimensional quantum critical systems. This nontrivial consistency strongly supports that the snapshot entropy after the factorization really represents the holographic entanglement entropy. On the other hand, the anomalous...

In this paper we prove necessary and sufficient conditions for the Kobayashi metric on a convex domain to be Gromov hyperbolic. In particular we show that for convex domains with $C^\infty$ boundary being of finite type in the sense of D'Angelo is equivalent to the Gromov hyperbolicity of the Kobayashi metric. We also show that bounded domains which are locally convexifiable and have finite type in the sense of D'Angelo have Gromov hyperbolic Kobayashi metric. The proofs use ideas from the...

Positron sources are critical components of the future linear collider projects. This is essentially due to the high luminosity required, orders of magnitude higher than existing ones. In addition, polarization of the positron beam rather expands the physics research potential of the machine. In this framework, the Compton sources for polarized positron production are taken into account where the high energy gamma rays are produced by the Compton scattering and subsequently converted into the...

We consider a class of nonlocal reaction-diffusion problems, referred to as replicator-mutator equations in evolutionary genetics. By using explicit changes of unknown function, we show that they are equivalent to the heat equation and, therefore, compute their solution explicitly. Based on this, we then prove that, in the case of beneficial mutations in asexual populations, solutions dramatically depend on the tails of the initial data: they can be global, become extinct in finite time or,...

Alternative acceleration technologies are currently under development for cost-effective, robust, compact and efficient solutions. One such technology is plasma wakefield acceleration, driven by either a charged particle or laser beam. However, the potential issues must be studied in detail. In this paper, the emittance growth of the witness beam through elastic scattering from gaseous media is derived. The model is compared with the numerical studies.

We assess the suitability of quantum and semiclassical initial value representations, exemplified by the coupled coherent states (CCS) method and the Herman Kluk (HK) propagator, respectively, for modeling the dynamics of an electronic wave packet in a strong laser field, if this wave packet is initially bound. Using Wigner quasiprobability distributions and ensembles of classical trajectories, we identify signatures of over-the-barrier and tunnel ionization in phase space for static and...

We study the nonequilibrium time evolution of the spin-1/2 anisotropic Heisenberg (XXZ) spin chain, with a choice of dimer product and Neel states as initial states. We investigate numerically various short-ranged spin correlators in the long-time limit and find that they deviate significantly from predictions based on the generalized Gibbs ensemble (GGE) hypotheses. By computing the asymptotic spin correlators within the recently proposed quench-action formalism [Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 257203...

In this paper, we set the new limits on the equation of state parameter (EoS) of dark energy with the observations of cosmic microwave background radiation (CMB) from Planck satellite, the type Ia supernovae from Pan-STARRS and the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO). We consider two parametrization forms of EoS: a constant $w$ and time evolving $w(a)=w_0+w_a(1-a)$. The results show that with a constant EoS, $w=-1.141\pm{0.075}$ ($68\%~C.L.$), which is consistent with $\Lambda$CDM at about...

We investigated the population of asteroids in comet-like orbits using available asteroid size and albedo catalogs of data taken with the Infrared Astronomical Satellite, AKARI, and the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer on the basis of their orbital properties (i.e., the Tisserand parameter with respect to Jupiter, TJ, and the aphelion distance, Q). We found that (i) there are 123 asteroids in comet-like orbits by our criteria (i.e., Q < 4.5 AU and TJ < 3), (ii) 80% of them have low...

We study the behaviour of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon emission in galaxies at z=0.3-1.4 using 1868 samples from the revised catalogue of AKARI North Ecliptic Pole Deep survey. The continuous filter coverage at 2-24um makes it possible to measure 8um luminosity, which is dominated by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon emission for galaxies at up to z=2. We compare the IR8 (= LIR/L(8)) and 8um to 4.5um luminosity ratio (L(8)/L(4.5)) with the starburstiness, Rsb, defined as excess of specific...

In this paper we give new constructions of Ferrer diagram rank metric codes, which achieve the largest possible dimension. In particular, we prove several cases of a conjecture by T. Etzion and N. Silberstein. We also establish a sharp lower bound on the dimension of linear rank metric anticodes with a given profile. Combining our results with the multilevel construction, we produce examples of subspace codes with the largest known cardinality for the given parameters.

We present experiments in which an ultra-cold sample of ammonia molecules is released from an electrostatic trap and recaptured after a variable time. It is shown that, by performing adiabatic cooling before releasing the molecules and adiabatic re-compression after they are recaptured, we are able to observe molecules even after more than 10 ms of free expansion. A coherent measurement performed during this time will have a statistical uncertainty that decreases approximately as the inverse of...

We compute one-loop renormalization group equations for non-singlet twist-four operators in QCD. The calculation heavily relies on the light-cone gauge formalism in the momentum fraction space that essentially rephrases the analysis of all two-to two and two-to-three transition kernels to purely algebraic manipulations both for non- and quasipartonic operators. This is the first brute force calculation of this sector available in the literature. Fourier transforming our findings to the...
